Bird Box, Porn, and Lust Spirits: 5 Chirps That May Save Your Life

The Eye is the Lamp of the Body

Within a week of its release on Netflix, the thriller Bird Box is well on its way to becoming a cult classic. According to Nielsen ratings, Bird Box reached an unduplicated audience of nearly 26 million viewers within its first 7 days of availability (Dec. 21 to Dec. 27).

While the funny memes inspired by the movie cracked me up (e.g. here and here), I was likewise intrigued as Team Jesus, i.e. “church folk”, chimed in with their interpretations, biblical parallels, and funny videos.

If you haven’t seen the film, here’s a brief synopsis: When a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, only one thing is certain: If you look at it, you take your life. Malorie’s (Sandra Bullock) last ditch effort for her freedom and two small children is a 2-day journey down a river, blindfolded, to the one place left that may offer sanctuary. She realizes the only warning system she has to alert her that the “forces” are near is the screeching chirp of the birds.

By my second viewing, even I could see a parallel that perhaps only a few would understand – or dare to acknowledge within themselves as relevant:

The dark forces in Bird Box could easily represent the spirits of lust that entangle followers of Christ with pornography – an addiction, bondage, and shame that can sabotage and cause one to murder his/her abundant life in Jesus Christ. These spirits are always trying to get you to “look”, with the promise that “it’s beautiful, you’ve got to see it.” The birds, or Holy Spirit, constantly warn us to walk by faith and “cover our eyes”, as He guides us to the refuge of the Most High.

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell: The Hidden Porn Problem in the Body of Christ

pornMore Christians – men, women, church leaders, young people – are struggling with the attraction or addiction to porn than ever before. Yet, it’s hardly a topic you hear during Bible studies – and even more scarce during family discussions.

Check out some of the statistical research by Barna in their 2016 landmark study, “The Porn Phenomenon“:

  • The average age of a child’s first exposure to pornography is between 8 and 9.
  • 3 out of 5 divorces cite the use of porn as a major factor.
  • Pornography use increases the marital infidelity rate by more than 300 percent.
  • 62% of teenagers (ages 13-17) have received a sexual image via their cell phones.
  • 72% of Christian young adults (ages 18-24) actively seek out pornography on the internet.
  • 88% of Pastors believe porn is a major issue in their church, yet only 7% provide programs for those struggling with pornography.

Team, this silent, hidden sickness has got to be spiritually eradicated. The warfare of lust is one of the most effective tools of our enemy, especially when we’re sad, bored, depressed, frustrated, disappointed – the hunger for porn will show up for all of these reasons, or no reason at all. And, we can’t ignore the effects of pornography and the proliferation of rape and molestation in society today. Porn is not your friend, it is not to be played with.

5 Chirps That May Guide You to Freedom from Porn

As you read the “chirps” below, examine yourself and find your WHY, your reason to seek help if you struggle with pornography, or your reason to flee and stay free from porn’s grip. The Truth will expose the deceiving whispers of principalities and the rulers of darkness (Ephesians 6:12), as well as the lies we tell ourselves. Truth, make us free…

Chirp #1: It grieves the Holy Spirit to share your temple with lust.

Nothing brings more confusion to life than 2 roommates who are the total opposite of each other and have nothing in common. The Holy Spirit is pure, clean, He is the Spirit of Truth. Lust keeps our minds and bodies filthy and is infected with lies, manipulation, and deception. Our bodies are not our own – our temples are the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). Strive to give the Holy Spirit a temple fit for the Divine Comforter.

Chirp #2: Run to the Word when the spirit of lust stirs.

When those “leaves of lust” begin to stir and you’re searching for a place of refuge, remember that God’s Word will be your hiding place (Psalm 32:7). Nothing kills the “buzz” of lust faster than entering in the presence of God. Can you worship the living God and watch porn at the same time? Is the dark spirit of lust more powerful than our light and salvation in Jesus Christ? Pick up your Bible and begin to read it. Go to YouTube and play your favorite worship song. Fill your space with the glory of God.

Chirp #3: Taking pleasure while others sin qualifies you for the same punishment.

“I wasn’t doing it, I was just watching.” Did you ever try this line with your parents? You weren’t doing the deed, but you were somewhere in the vicinity – egging it on, laughing, “approving” of the behavior. That excuse doesn’t go well with our earthly parents, so you know our Heavenly Father – who sees our heart – will not give us a pass either. Romans 1:32 tells us that when we “take pleasure” in the sinful deeds of others, we’re just as worthy of death as the ones doing the deeds! We won’t escape because we “only looked.” (Psalm 101:3) God requires us to flee – run away – from lust, not entertain it (2 Timothy 2:22).

Chirp #4: Can you lead the porn stars you’ve watched in prayer, or lead them to Christ?

Individuals who are in the porn industry are more than mere objects of pleasure – they are human beings who God loves and gave His Son to die on the cross for their sins. After watching them on that website, movie, or chat room – could you ever lead her or him to Christ? Could you honestly and in “good” faith pray for them after the images you’ve taken pleasure in? Let nothing stifle or damage your witness for God. Guard your eyes and your heart (Proverbs 4:23).

Chirp #5: As you get closer to freedom, beware of familiar voices.

In Bird Box, after Malorie and the kids beat the river and arrived in the woods, the force’s greatest deception was that of familiar voices. As you make small wins toward your freedom from porn, don’t listen to the familiar voices – those who will tell you “there’s nothing wrong with a little peek“, or “pornography is a marital aid – the bed is undefiled.” These voices may be enticing in your vulnerable state, and they may even come from people you know and love. Keep a prayer of discernment in your heart and a focus on deliverance and living porn-free no matter how “beautiful” others say the bondage is.

So, What’s the Play Call?

Deliverance from pornography and lust spirits takes work – repentance, consecration, staying woke about the enemy’s devices, a steady discipline of prayer, reading the Word, and fasting. Whether your deliverance takes weeks, months, years, or God breaks the struggle in an instant – know that greater is He, Jesus Christ, than any lust spirit in the world (1 John 4:4). You have the right and the power to be free and stay free.

Church leaders, prayerfully develop programs and resources for your congregations. Create safe, non-judgmental spaces for people to acknowledge the “porn thorn” and get the help they need. Here are a few resources for further consideration:

Your Sins Can Never Void God’s Gift of Salvation

blood of jesus

The Gift of Salvation Never Expires

giftHave you ever felt unworthy of God’s love? Do you believe that your past actions or current behaviors are so sinful that God will not forgive you, or He’ll withdraw His offer of salvation to you?

I write these words because I have had conversations with people – some friends, some strangers – about this very topic over the years and it’s apparent to me that they were misled. It’s not their fault, though. When you look at a lot of Christians and their “better than thou” attitudes, one would think that having a relationship with God requires perfection.

That is so far from the truth!  All you need to begin having a relationship with God is the desire and honesty – God will meet you right there.

Hope for Salvation

crucify himThe first thing you need to know is that God “wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth” (1 Timothy 2:4 NLT).  And, by “everyone”, God means everyone.

God is talking about people from all walks of life, every ethnicity, every socioeconomic class, every education level – all people who sin (which is everyone who still has breath in their lungs).

One of my favorite verses in all the Bible is when Jesus was questioned by the Pharisees (these were people who taught on religion) as to why He would eat with sinners. Jesus replied, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do.  I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners” (Mark 2:17 NLT).  If God only wanted a relationship with righteous people, He would have never sent Jesus to die on the cross to allow sinners to have a relationship with God and to be able to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.

If you are reading this message, then there is still hope for you.  The only reason you aren’t in this relationship with God yet is because you are running from the call of Jesus or you haven’t recognized the call as what it really is. Jesus is waiting for you to come to Him.  Jesus says in Revelation 3:20-21, “Look! I stand at the door and knock.  If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.  Those who are victorious will sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat with my father on His throne.”  I know that if you are reading this it is because you have heard the knock, but maybe you aren’t sure if it is the voice of Jesus behind that door. Maybe you aren’t sure what your next steps should be.

The best thing that you’ll ever do in life is to open that door.

So, What’s The Play Call?

  • The first thing that you’re going to want to do is answer the call of Jesus by opening that door immediately. Don’t hesitate to let Jesus into your life.  It’s time to stop questioning and start doing.
  • Confess all of the sins that you can think of to God and ask for forgiveness. “If we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness” (1 John 1:9 NLT).  God knows what you’ve done without you telling Him – your confession is simply an act of obedience and proof that you are ready to enter a relationship with God based on honesty and openness.
  • If you’ve never been saved, you must “believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31 NLT).  “And when you believed in Christ, He identified you as His own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom He promised long ago.  The Spirit is God’s guarantee that He will give us the inheritance He promised and that He has purchased us to be His own people.  He did this so we would praise and glorify Him” (Ephesians 1:13-14 NLT).
  • If you have already been saved, but have separated yourself from God for any reason, God is waiting for you, too!  Isaiah 55:7 (ESV) says, “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that He may have compassion on him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.”  You are known by God and your actions did not catch Him by surprise. He just wants that relationship with you to be back and stronger than ever. Repent and pick up where you left off.
  • Be patient with yourself.  Leaving a sinful life behind can take some time. I highly recommend finding a church that not only preaches but teaches the Word of God in truth.  The more you know, the more you will progress into righteous living.

5 Tips to Work Your New Year Goals, Not Just Talk About Them

new year

Do the Work!

As the new year begins, it seems that all thoughts are pointing toward a fresh start. Optimism is renewed and confident expectation for the future is evident.

I’m sure you’ve already heard people around you talking about getting in shape after the holidays. Then, there’s the conversation about saving more money and finally getting out of debt. Others vow that the new year will be their year to get organized.

Everyone loves this idea:

What lies ahead will be better
than what has been.

While all of this talk about the New Year isn’t a bad thing, the simple act of flipping a calendar page from December to January will not change you.

Let’s be real, Team. If you have not taken the time to develop the discipline necessary to commit to going to the gym at 5 a.m. in 2018, on January 1, 2019 the “fitness anointing” will probably not overshadow you.

If you did not set a budget before the month of January, chances are you will not be successful in reaching your savings goals.

If you’re looking for something magical to happen simply because it’s a new month, think again!

Early New Year’s Intervention

If you’ve fallen short in reaching your goals in the past, all hope is not lost!

Here are 5 quick tips to help you reach your goals for the new year:

1. Change your mind.

Authentic and lasting change begins with our thoughts.  If we are going to be successful in reaching our goals in 2019 we must renew our minds in the Word of God (Romans 12:2).  He has already given us the power and ability to be self-disciplined (2 Timothy 1:7).  It is up to us to use the power that He has given us to make positive changes in our lives.

2. Know your “why”.

Take some time and think about why you want to reach a particular goal. This step will help you to regain your focus as the year wears on. It will be your reason not to give up when things get difficult. This step is vitally important.

3. Know the price of achievement.

Consider the cost of what you’d like to accomplish (Luke 14:28-30). What will you have to give up? What adjustments will you need to make in your schedule? You will need a plan. Write down the steps it will take to reach your goal.  Your plan should be broken down into small, daily tasks. The simpler the daily tasks the better.  Consistent effort produces amazing results!

4. Consider an accountability partner.

Tell someone about your goal and have them hold you accountable.  Have an end of the week check-in to monitor your progress. This is an additional way of ensuring your success. Ideally, this person will help keep you motivated and will celebrate your wins with you.

5. Be gracious to yourself.

Extend yourself a little grace and patience; don’t be so hard on yourself.  You did not get where you are in one day. The process of making a life change is something that happens gradually, over time.

So, what’s the play call?

The secret to accomplishing your goals this year is simple:

Show up every day and DO THE WORK!

How have YOU committed to show up and CRUSH this year?

Drink Ye All Of It: The Sweet Results of Bitter Advice That’s Good For You

advice

Drink Ye All Of It

adviceIt’s wintertime. Cold and flu season is underway. It is the time when bundling up, taking your vitamins, and drinking your orange juice is important. And, you know what? I absolutely hate orange juice. Yep… you read right, I despise the taste of the stuff. I love oranges, but orange juice? Not so much. Why should you care? Well, it’s not really necessary that you do, but one tip my dad would always give me when I was sick was, “Get you some orange juice.” Now, I would always express my disdain for it, but he would just repeat it as if to say, “I said what I said.”

Here’s the thing, drinking the juice always helped. Granted, I had to take in 3 to 4 cups before it seemed to make a difference, but it did. Here’s another thing, even though I knew it would help, I still never went for the orange juice on my own. Nope, it wasn’t until my dad told me to drink it, that I actually did. And, the more I drank, the more effective it was.

Do It Anyway

adviceEven as adults, we have things we dislike, even if they actually are for our good. So often, the very thing that we hate or despise, is the thing that will aid us in making it through or to our next phase of life.

For some of us, it may be fasting. Not many people enjoy skipping meals, but there are times when that is what God requires of us. “And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.” (Mark 9:29). There may be a few of us that need to listen to that one friend or family member when they say, “you need a vacation.” I think it is easy to forget that our bodies and minds need a break as well. Especially us “strong friends” that can easily slip into workaholism. “There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.” (Hebrews 4:9)

We all need a reminder, every now and then, to do what’s best for us. For me, in those times, it was to drink my orange juice. Here are a few things to help when you don’t want to heed that “what’s best” advice:

  1. You won’t always be the teacher. There will be times that you must be the advice taker instead of the giver. God will always provide you with what you need, even if He sends someone to help you. “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly, therefore, will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9
  2. The orange juice could never have the proper effect on me if I didn’t drink it. The instruction or advice you’ve been given cannot work if you don’t follow it. “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.” Matthew 11:15
  3. You may need to hold your breath. So, I told you I don’t like orange juice… well, the taste definitely doesn’t help. I’d often find myself holding my breath when I drink it. There will be times when you have to “hold your breath” and suck it up to make it through. We have to become breathless and allow the breath of God to breathe help into our situations. I have learned that I cannot be beyond help, even when I don’t want to accept it. “Help me, O Lord my God: O save me according to thy mercy.” Psalms 109:26

It is okay to need that reminder, but it is important to obey the voice. My dad’s orange juice reminder caused my symptoms to ease sooner. In life, that “Go to the doctor” reminder may be what helps you out. No matter what it is, please, do it.

Passion Conference 2019: The Collegiate Gathering of Worship and Teaching

passion conference 2019

39,000+ Students Unite in Atlanta, Dallas, and DC for Passion Conference 2019

Nearly 40,000 young adults from across the globe will fill arenas in Atlanta, Dallas, and Washington, D.C., for a sold-out gathering of worship and teaching. January 2nd – January 4th, attendees will gather in Atlanta’s State Farm Arena (formerly Philips Arena) and Infinite Energy Center; The Theatre at Grand Prairie in Dallas; and The Anthem in Washington, D.C., for Passion 2019—a gathering of 18-25-year-olds and their church and campus leaders.

Passion 2019 will be live and live-streamed simultaneously from the four locations to students from hundreds of universities and 36 countries. Each venue will have live worship music in every session—with multiple bands traveling between locations—and attendees will experience teaching from select speakers live while seeing the others via livestream.

Leading the way at Passion 2019 will be Passion founders Louie and Shelley Giglio and Passion Music, joined by guests Christine Caine, Matt Chandler, and Chad Veach. Worship leaders and bands will include Passion Band, Crowder, Lecrae, Kari Jobe, and Cody Carnes, Travis Greene, Andy Mineo, Mosaic MSC, Tasha Cobbs-Leonard and Trip Lee.

Passion believes that worship and justice go hand in hand, so students will arrive to serve as well as worship. In the past few years, attendees have given some $8.3 million to fight modern-day slavery through Passion and The END IT Movement, assisting in awareness, prevention, rescue, and restoration. Ending modern-day slavery is still a focus of Passion 2019, however, Passion is also calling students to give towards the Deaf Bible Society as part of Hope in Every Language. The Hope in Every Language campaign is designed to distribute the stories of Jesus (from the New Testament) in the unique sign languages of various countries around the world. Only 2 percent of the 70 million people in the global deaf community have access to the Gospels in their unique sign languages.

Passion 2019 marks the first return to Dallas in several years.

About Passion Conferences

Led by a stirring in the heart of Atlanta-based pastor Louie Giglio, Passion was birthed in 1997 to see the more than 20 million college students across the globe awaken to the reality of an omnipotent and glorious Creator. Since then, millions of students from numerous countries have joined the Passion movement, united across ministry and denominational lines, to seek the face of God in worship and prayer at 37 conferences, five world tours, multiple one-day and regional events and music tours. Passion’s core Bible verse, Isaiah 26:8 states, “Yes, LORD, walking in the way of your truth, we wait for you; your name and renown are the desire of our souls.” The Passion team is led by Louie and Shelley Giglio and operates under the direction of a board that is committed to spreading the fame of Jesus Christ to college students everywhere.

The Cure for the Lukewarm “Christian Slacker”

lukewarm christian

Out With the Old

The new year is upon us and many of us have made resolutions that, unfortunately, we will break by the third week in January. It’s like we just get sidetracked and the lure of the familiar overrides the thing we know is good for us.

Weight loss? Ever since bestie’s birthday brunch, it’s been downhill.

Get out of debt? President’s Day Sale lurking.

New boo? Canceled by answering old boo’s Happy New Year text.

You see how the devil is busy?

But I can tell you that there is a cure, one commitment that you can make that will help you get your entire life [in order].  Even if you’re just realizing that you didn’t put it on your list, here it is:

Put God first.

Let the renewal of your relationship with Jesus be the one you continuously water and tend to. Seek Jesus first (Matthew 6:33) and I promise all the other things will fall into place.

Don’t know where to start?

Begin with this prayer…

The Christian Slacker’s Prayer

Confession

Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned.

I’ve turned my back on You more times than I can count; choosing the plans I had for myself over the plans You’ve had for me. I’ve chosen my will over Yours and my own foolish pride over Your glory.

I’ve made excuses for my sins and rationalized my behavior by using the world as a marker, rather than living by and trusting in Your Word.

I’ve been lukewarm and lazy in my approach to You; doing just enough to feel like I had a relationship with You. But I want the real thing.

So, today I choose excellence. I choose to put You first in my life and to pursue this relationship with You with all my heart. I thank You in advance for Your forgiveness and the new mercies that You allow each and every single day.

I love you. And I thank You for taking me back.

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen.

Excerpt from the book: Confessions of a Faithful Slacker: 7 Steps to Renewing Your Relationship with Christ

A Word from a Former Slacker-in-Chief

At one point in my life, my relationship with God was on the back burner. And the stove wasn’t even on.

I was lukewarm because I acknowledged that God was my Lord and Savior with my lips, but my heart was elsewhere – dodging His calls and sending Him to voicemail – “Leave a message, God. I’ll get back to you at my earliest convenience.”  The nerve.

I was lazy because, in hindsight, I realize I took His grace and mercy for granted. Also, I knew that once God got a hold of me, He was going to change me; make me do things His way. I was leery of that. I liked control. I thought I knew better. I didn’t want to be a “Holy Roller” or a “Jesus Freak” or “Church Lady” – one of the “saved” who gave God a bad name. So I was a part-timer.  I took shorter hours, and my benefits package, though it contained grace and mercy, did not include peace.

But, God wanted a full-time employee.

Now my life has not been the same since I accepted the position. Thank God. The first assignment? Writing “Confessions of a Faithful Slacker”, a book He gave me in prayer.

I had no idea what to do with any of what He told me. He gave me the title and the chapter names. Then it took five years for me to live through and develop it. He took me through the five-year process so it wouldn’t take you as long.

The girl who prayed that prayer is not the woman who is writing this article. That girl is a remnant of me, the one who I look back at and chuckle or shake my head. I was a hokey pokey type of Christian. I put my left leg in, took my left leg out depending on what was more attractive to these lying eyes; what sin I was going to joyfully partake in. Yes, joyfully.

My former Pastor used to say, “If you didn’t enjoy yourself when you were sinning, you weren’t doing it right.” I did it right. Was proficient at sin, y’all. I enjoyed myself. Immensely. Why do you think we need the Holy Spirit to get our lives right?! Whew!

So, as the year comes to a close, let us be as faithful in our hearts to Him as we were to our sins. Let us be as loyal in our relationship with Jesus as we’ve been to people who’ve broken our hearts. Let us seek Him like we seek to shrink our waistlines. Trust me, it takes less effort – and it doesn’t give you gas!

These days, nothing is more attractive to this woman of God than sitting in His presence and being in His will.

In the words of Forever Jones, He wants it ALL: your heart, your soul, your body, your mind, your finances, your life.  Of everyone you’ve ever met, He’s the only one who won’t abuse it.

So, What’s the Play Call?

Slack on God no longer. His full-time benefits package is amazing. He loves you. And, He wants you back.

As that prayer changed my life, I pray it does the same for you.

Happy New Year, Team Jesus!

5 Tips to Feed Your Holiday Houseguests Without the Anxiety

family dinner

The Holiday Houseguests Are Coming: Nourish the Body and Soul

Hosting guests around the holidays can be jolly fun, yet quite overwhelming. Feeding your guests 3 meals a day in addition to hosting your big event can quickly begin to feel like a burden, especially if your personal food and healthy living choices are different. Mental anxiety mounting, many individuals just ‘throw in the towel,’ promising to get back to their healthy lifestyle after the holidays.

But is that what you really want to do? Or, do you want to find simple strategies that help you steward your body, even during the holiday season?

There is certainly no guilt in peppering in some treats, but by definition, a treat isn’t a treat if we consume it daily.

As tempting as it might be to grab your local take-out menu or pick up your phone for pizza delivery, that is not your only option when feeding a crowd. Selecting recipes that are nourishing and well-liked by all is no easy feat, but it’s possible when you know this one trick…

Build-your-own Meals

holiday weight gainCreating a ‘build-your-own bar’ allows each person to create a customized meal that fits their dietary preferences. A win-win for all!

This strategy works for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You simply lay out all the components and your guests create their own meal. As a host, it’s important to be mindful of your guests’ food preferences, allergies or intolerances, but sometimes in doing so, we forego our own preferences as well. It doesn’t have to be this way. The way you and your family choose to eat matters.

These ideas are so easy to put together and require little to no cooking. And, many of the components can be cooked or prepped in advance. It is also likely that grabbing these ingredients at the grocery store will be a whole lot less than your take-out receipt!

A few tips when creating your own build-your-own bar:

  • Be mindful of food allergies and preferences
  • Provide a vegetarian option, especially if you know this may be preferred by some guests
  • If guests are hesitant at first, you can demo how to put together a meal to inspire their creativity and help them feel comfortable with the process

Taco Bar

tacosWho doesn’t love tacos? They are quite versatile and can fit practically any food allergy or dietary preference. People can make a ‘taco salad’ to get more veggies on their plate and simply crumble a few chips on top. Or some may opt to skip the chips and shell altogether. You can provide corn or cassava tortillas or tortilla chips for those who may have a gluten allergy or intolerance. Place each ingredient in a bowl and allow each person to serve himself. For a few extra dollars, most of these ingredients can be purchased already sliced and prepped so that you have very little to do before serving. This simple taco bar will be a winner among your guests and everyone will declare that it was such a clever idea.

INGREDIENTS
Protein Options (choose 2)
Pulled Chicken (we love this Mexican Chicken & Black Beans that cooks in the slow cooker)
Seasoned Taco Meat
Beans- Black or Pinto

Toppings & Ingredients (choose any or all!)
Lettuce
Tomatoes
Black olives
Shredded cheese
Diced avocado or guacamole
Salsa
Sour cream or plain yogurt
Sliced or diced bell peppers
Chopped cilantro
Tortilla chips
Tortillas (whole wheat, traditional, corn or cassava flour)*

A note about tortillas: Many are highly processed and have a lengthy ingredient list which may include hydrogenated oils (ie. trans fats). Check out the ingredient list first before tossing them into your cart to ensure the ones you choose fit your personal health values.

Yogurt Bar

yogurtYogurt might feel a little boring until you create a parfait layering colorful toppings for a customized flavor party in your mouth. Young and old will enjoy creating their own culinary masterpiece. Score extra bonus points on presentation if you put out some clear sundae dishes or wine glasses.

There are so many different topping ideas that you could serve this every morning that your guests are with you and no one would ever get bored. Make sure to include a dairy-free (plant-based) yogurt like almond milk or coconut milk yogurt for those who might not tolerate dairy. Offering plain yogurt minimizes added sugar and allows everyone to flavor as they wish. But you can also offer a vanilla version for those who may prefer this flavor. Get creative with toppings like crumbled muffins which can be made in advance OR cinnamon spiced almonds for the perfect spiced crunch!

INGREDIENTS
Yogurt (greek or traditional)- plain and/or vanilla
Almond or coconut milk yogurt

Topping Ideas (choose any or all)
Fresh or frozen berries- easy and require little prep
Bananas- sliced
Chopped or slivered nuts- any type
Chia seeds
Flax seeds, ground
Nut butter- almond, peanut, cashew, sunflower- warm slightly in microwave to easily drizzle
Raisins and dried fruit- choose fruit without added sugars when possible
Freeze dried fruit- a fun crunch
Coconut flakes
Crumbled muffins- Pumpkin Spice, Blueberry, Banana Nut or any flavor you love
Honey or maple syrup or stevia- for anyone needing a little extra sweetness

Pasta Bar

Few will decline a warm bowl of pasta, but why head out to your local Italian restaurant when you can create your own pasta bar with quality ingredients? It is helpful to know about any allergies or intolerances in advance to help guide your choices when selecting pasta. This guide can help you choose the nourishing one that fits you and your guests. One option to consider is bean or lentil pasta, which is naturally gluten-free and high in protein and fiber.

Simply prepare all of your ingredients in advance and then boil your pasta a few minutes before serving to keep it warm. Don’t forget to include 1 or 2 vegetable options like steamed broccoli or roasted vegetables so that guests can add lots of veggies to their bowl. If you know there is a vegetarian dining with you, this Lentil Marinara Sauce is simple to make and perfect for plant-based and meat eaters.

INGREDIENTS
Pasta- whole grain, black bean, lentil, quinoa, etc.
Marinara sauce
Ground beef or chicken
Pesto- a different option for those not fond of marinara
Steamed or roasted broccoli
Roasted bell peppers- red, orange and yellow are the sweetest
Parmesan cheese, grated or shredded

Oatmeal Bar

oatmealOatmeal is not only nutritious but hearty, satisfying and budget-friendly. To make this breakfast a cinch, simply fill your slow cooker the night before and cook steel cut oats overnight. In the morning stir in a bit of milk or water and they are ready to serve with your favorite toppings.

Of course, old-fashioned oats don’t take long to cook and can be made in about 10 minutes on the stovetop. Oatmeal is naturally gluten-free and making them with plant-based milk or water can keep them dairy free if anyone has an allergy or intolerance. Add a bowl of hard-cooked eggs on your serving table for a little extra protein and staying power so your family is satisfied all morning long.

Salad Bar

saladAn epic salad is just waiting to be created by you and your guests- no boring dinner salads allowed! The perfect salad has a good variety of flavors, colors, and textures. A satisfying salad also needs to include carbohydrates like veggies, beans, or fruit, protein like chicken, edamame, or chickpeas and fats like avocado, quality salad dressing, nuts, and seeds. Even kids can build their own salad or provide plates so that they can eat a ‘deconstructed’ salad if they don’t like everything mixed together.

Save yourself a whole lot of time by buying pre-chopped lettuce and veggies- simply put them in bowls with serving utensils. Edamame (soybeans) boil up in 5 minutes flat; add a hit of kosher salt and they are ready to serve. Chicken breasts or thighs can be seasoned and added to your slow cooker with a splash of broth to cook all day- then slice up and serve. Offer several salad dressing options (at least 2) so that everyone can finish off their creation with a flavor bomb that combines everything together. This Sweet & Tangy Balsamic Vinaigrette OR Citrus Vinaigrette Dressing are easy to shake up and can be made several days in advance.

INGREDIENTS
Greens- any lettuce or greens you prefer
Veggies- cucumber, grape tomatoes, bell peppers, carrots (chopped or shredded)
Beans or edamame- perfect for plant-based eaters
Olives- greek, green, or black
Seeds- sunflower or pumpkin
Cheese- feta, goat cheese, cheddar or anything preferred
Avocado- sliced or diced
Chicken or other protein option
Salad dressing- quality bottled options and/or homemade

Healthy isn’t a title you pick up when it’s convenient or your week is going according to plan- it’s a way of living, even during the holidays. But when you make intentional food and nutritional choices and you are expecting guests, it can feel confusing and stressful. These build-your-own meal bars are a fun and creative way to offer customizable meals that fit a variety of eating patterns and preferences.

So, what’s the play call?

In the days of the early church, the people would worship together in the temple and then go to each others’ homes to share a meal and celebrate the goodness of God. The holidays are an opportune time to gather, connect, share stories, and nourish our body and soul.

Enjoy baking cookies with the kids. Look forward to eating that ‘dish that you only eat once a year.’ But don’t believe the lie that you need to give up your personal eating preferences because it is the ‘holidays’. Celebrate. Nourish. Break bread. Simplify. Don’t allow food to become a source of angst, but instead, an invitation to connect.

Daily they met together in the temple courts and in one another’s homes to celebrate communion. They shared meals together with joyful hearts and tender humility. They were continually filled with praises to God, enjoying the favor of all the people. Acts 2:46-47 (TPT)

From Victory to Fear to Victory: What Are You Doing Here?

Today’s Scripture Lesson: 1 Kings 19

On the Run: Elijah, the Slayer of Baal’s Prophets?

We join the story of Elijah, God’s prophet, right after the incredible destruction of the Baal worshippers. After king Ahab told queen Jezebel that Elijah had killed all the prophets of Baal, Jezebel sent a messenger threatening Elijah’s life. Upon hearing the news, Elijah ran south out of Jezreel to Beersheba to escape Jezebel’s wrath.

He sat down under a juniper tree in the wilderness and asked God to take his life. Soon, an angel came to meet Elijah and fed him. Knowing that Elijah was about to take a long journey, the angel returned and fed him again. After eating, Elijah traveled south for 40 days and nights into the Sinai peninsula, to go to the mountain of God called Horeb or Mt. Sinai.

Upon reaching the mountain, God asked Elijah a question – “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

The prophet was quick to respond with words that point to his own personal efforts, revealing his un-applauded pride and fear. He tells God, “I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars and killed Your prophets with the sword. And I alone am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”

Upon hearing these words, God told Elijah, “Go…stand on the mountain before the Lord.” As Elijah reached a cave in the mountain, God sent a great wind, an earthquake, and fire. The Bible tells us that God wasn’t in the wind. He wasn’t in the earthquake. And, God wasn’t in the fire.

After the fury had settled, Elijah stepped out of the cave where he had taken shelter and God asked the same question; “What are you doing here, Elijah?” Receiving the same question, Elijah gave the same answer.

This time, God gave Elijah a similar but different instruction. God told His prophet, “Go back the same way you came,” telling him of three men who needed to be anointed: two kings and the prophet who would be Elijah’s successor. Then, God’s final words to His lonely prophet must have caused great reflection on the ensuing journey back: “I will leave 7,000 in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal and every mouth that has not kissed him.”

Have You Ever Run from a Victory into Fear?

I’m encouraged by God’s patience in this story; and to a degree, I’m amused by His creativity in driving home His message. Elijah had just come off of one of the greatest exhibitions of God’s power we see in the Old Testament. Now, he finds himself running away and begging to die after being threatened by some earthly authority.

God doesn’t get upset; instead, He sends an angel to strengthen and comfort His servant. Knowing this wouldn’t be enough to convince Elijah to stop focusing on his fear, leave his self-pity, and get back to being about his Father’s business, God fills him with enough nutrition for a forty-day journey. Upon reaching his destination, God simply asks His child, What are you doing here?”

Following a bit of instruction, the Almighty releases three powerful forces of nature and withdraws Himself during the display. No voice in the rushing wind? No vision of Him in the fire? His voice didn’t rumble from the depths of the earth? No. He defies all of Elijah’s expectations. He remains silent and invisible during the mighty demonstration for the man standing on the same mountain where God spoke through forces of nature to his servant and friend, Moses.

When God finally speaks again, He asks the same question He asked Elijah when the prophet had not yet climbed the mountain. “What are you doing here?” This question calls to mind a statement and a question Jesus made several times to His disciples: “O ye of little faith. Do you not know . . . ?”

In other words, Jesus was asking His disciples, as God was asking His prophet, “Where is your faith?”

In asking the question and in giving Elijah the charge to return and serve 7,000 people in Israel, God was saying to him, “I know you believe in My power, but you have a problem trusting My faithfulness.”

God was reminding Elijah that he doesn’t see what his Creator sees, nor does he know what his Creator knows. At the heart of this question, God was asking, “Where is your faith; is your faith in this mountain where I met Moses; is your faith in miraculous signs, or is your faith in Me? Isn’t My voice, My Word, enough?”

Where is Your Faith, Team?

Faith and belief are two parts of one whole. They aren’t separate. They aren’t equal. They are one.

Having said that, we tend to lean one way or the other because, while they are one, they have two different areas of focus. Belief focuses on power, signs, and miracles. Faith focuses on God’s sovereignty, authority, and faithfulness. Elijah wasn’t lacking in belief; it was his faith that came into question when he turned his focus toward Jezebel’s authority.

SO, WHAT’S THE PLAY CALL?

Elijah traveled 40 days seeking a sign that he would be OK. Jesus told the Pharisees and Sadducees in Matthew 16:4, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign…”

I wonder if that caused any of them, or us, to reflect on what He told the crowd to do in Matthew 6:33: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.”

As you seek His righteousness, consider your faith and your belief. Pray over the words of David from Psalm 139:23-24, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my anxious thoughts.”
