3 One-Word Lies That Keep Marriage in the Sunken Place

marriage

Minimalistic Lying?

marriageWhen marriage experts and marriage counselors say that communication is the key to a happy marriage – it is most definitely one of the most important keys to marital peace and bliss.

And although communication in marriage takes place when not a word is spoken, verbal communication – what we say and how we say it – has caused many unions to beautifully thrive or die a horrible death.

You see, the tongue doesn’t straighten itself out on its own because we’re speaking to the one we made a loving vow to – oh no, Cleavers! That little member is still out of control (James 3:8), and often “cuts up” more because it is the person with whom we have the most intimate relationship with on planet earth.

But, let’s not make our unruly mouths the scapegoat here. Spouses – especially spouses on Team Jesus – are still humans who are in the process of dying to old, evil ways. We’re just doing so alongside someone who’s on their own journey to cleanse and heal the heart (Luke 6:45, Psalms 51:10). And, nothing infects the heart like the sinful nature of fearful lies.

Every Lie is Traced to Fear.

lies fearDid you know that you can trace every lie you’ve ever spoken to some element of fear? Think about it. Perhaps you were afraid of the consequences of your actions, or perhaps you were afraid of letting someone down. Some of us are afraid to be authentic, or afraid of the pain or discomfort of the truth.

How does this show up in marriage? Easily. And, it doesn’t take a ton of words, either. See if you’ve ever told one of these one-word lies, and let’s see how we can apply God’s perfect love to cast out our fears (1 John 4:18):

1. Yes.

Has your spouse ever asked you a question, and you responded in the affirmative – but in your heart of hearts – you wanted to say no? “Baby, does this look/taste/smell/feel good?” “Did you {insert honey-do list item}?” “Do you want to go {insert place that gets on your nerves}?”

What’s going on here? We may think we’re just keeping the peace, or going with the flow – but those yeses are dishonest and they don’t honor our true feelings. The fake “yes” also dishonors your spouse, how? Because they will waste their time and energy responding to an affirmative that doesn’t really exist.

2. No.

Has your spouse ever asked you a question, and you responded with “no” – but you know good and well the answer was “yes”? “Did you {insert something you’re not supposed to do or your spouse has asked you not to do}?” “Do you need me to {insert a real need you have}?”

What are we afraid of? Getting caught? Being held accountable? Showing vulnerability?

3. Nothing.

This lie right here is so big, they’ve named a food after it – the Nothing-Burger! “Baby, what’s wrong?” “What did you want to talk about?” “What did I/he/she/they say to make you upset?

The nothing response is rooted in denial. Our marriages will never grow or heal from what we won’t acknowledge and face head-on. So, we may think we’re dodging bullets with this little word, but we’re actually building an arsenal of weapons the enemy will use against us and the marriage in the future.

How to Deal With That Sinking Feeling

With all of the yes-nos, no-yeses, and Nothing Burgers, is there any question as to why some of our marriages are sinking fast? Forget the beef – Where’s the Truth?

Remember our first Team Huddle Mail of the year? This is the Year of Truth! We’re allowing the Word of God to sanctify us, and we’re intentional about being a Friend of Truth (John 17:17)!

join team jesus magazine

What better place for the family to start embracing Truth than within the marriage?! And, everyone has a role to play.

Rise Together for Each Other

submissionIf you’ve been less than honest with your spouse, realize that the Truth heals and fear steals. You’re doing more harm than good to yourself and the union. Issues that go unspoken and unaddressed can sink your marriage – and you – into a dark, depressed state of bondage that can drive you to unhealthy behaviors, poor eating, hopelessness, and divorce. If you can’t get what’s on your chest off your chest one-on-one, consider personal counseling and/or a marriage counselor to help you address any unknown fears or issues.

To the wife or husband who’s thinking, “She’s talking to my wife/husband – I speak my truth!” (These are my choir members LOL).

Ok, great. But, does your wife/husband feel safe enough to talk to you honestly and transparently? Do they walk in fear of your judgment or retaliation? Sure, telling the truth is everyone’s responsibility, but is there anything you can do to make the process easier if your spouse is struggling?

Try sharing with your spouse that you understand their feelings and whenever they’re ready to have that honest conversation – you’re there. To some spouses, marriage doesn’t feel like a team – but rather a boxing match, where everyone has their own corner.

So, What’s the Play Call?

Submit to one another as unto the Lord (Ephesians 5:21). Invite more God in your marriage through prayer and acts of kindness, and escort your ways and thoughts of what’s best out the door.

I pray that God would move every Cleaver reading these words to drop their boxing gloves and embrace their spouse. Lord, rescue every marriage from sinking deeper into despair. Cause your Cleavers everywhere to love as You love, Lord. Give each of us a heart for the other – seeking to listen, understand, feel, and please the other. Perfect our love, O God, so we can kick out fear, lies, and open our hearts to receive the freedom that real love brings.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

Anger Issues, Men, and the Pursuit of Godly Character

anger issues men

I Have Anger Issues, But I Love God.

Have you ever wondered why it is so hard to be a man of character in our society? Reacting with anger for some men is normal, however, it only brings pain to those around us. I should know – anger used to fill my emotional tank as a young man. If someone cut me off on the road or looked at my girlfriend, I would be filled with rage.

The hate inside of me fueled acts of violence and distaste toward anyone who viewed the world differently from me. I destroyed many relationships and excited fear in those who loved me. I wore hate on my face like a mask, and eventually, I couldn’t get it off. Anger was all my heart knew, until…

Follow the Steps Of A Righteous Man

If we desire to live a righteous life before God and others as men of high character, let’s start with these 3 steps, as shown in the book of James:

James 1:19-20: “This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God.”

1. Listen carefully to God and others.

Have you ever experienced the sweetness of sitting in the presence of God and not asking Him anything? Sitting in the presence of God quietly is a discipline and takes practice. An athlete will discipline himself every day to grow stronger. It is the same with spiritual disciplines in our life.

My grandpa always did tell me that I should listen to anyone who talks to me because you never know when you’re going to hear something that you need to hear. This is so true from a cultural and spiritual perspective. God speaks through other people to us, so listen!

2. Don’t talk so much, man!

There is freedom in this nugget of truth. Next time you have a conversation, try to listen more than you talk. You will be amazed at what you see and hear. Most people are hurting and looking for someone to encourage them. Try it!

3. Remember that anger is a choice.

Jesus living in us gives us a choice whether or not to fall into the trap of unrighteous anger. Jesus is bigger than our emotions! His Word is our security and hope for the future!

So, What’s The Play Call?

Brother, God’s Word is true, but our emotions can mislead us. Use the practical steps that James 1:19-20 teaches us and overcome your anger issues.

Listen carefully to God’s voice in the midst of tense conversation, and look for opportunities to share Jesus and His character. God sent us men as His Gospel bearers for our families and the world!

Do You Know Where You Are Going After Death?

  1. Agree with God that you mess up and there is sin in your life (Romans 3:23).
  2. Believe that Jesus took your place on a torture device (1 Peter 2:24).
  3. Turn away from the sin/mistakes in your life (Acts 3:19).
  4. Receive Christ into your heart (John 1:12).

Healthy Eating Choices and The Power of One Bite

healthy eating

The Power of One…

Over a decade ago, I saw a commercial I will never forget.  You consecutively see an individual eating a plate of delicious looking food. One after the other.  The commercial flipped to another meal and then another.  Again and again, this person was sitting down to a meal… breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  But, they did 1 thing every single time – left 1 bite on the plate.  Just a little bit remained.  It didn’t look significant.  To most of us, that would seem inconsequential.   What’s 1 bite?

If you eat at least 3 meals per day, that’s 21 meals per week.  What would 21 bites look like on a plate?  Pretty significant, huh?!

The last image in the commercial was all of those little bites pieced together in a collage.

Point made.

The Power of One Healthy Choice

One of the biggest issues anyone who is trying to change a health or food behavior faces is learning to acknowledge the little wins.  It’s about seeing small victories as the actual pathway to the ultimate goal.

It is easy to shrug off something that seems insignificant and deceive our mind to believe that it doesn’t matter.

It does.  Here’s why…

You can’t get where you want to go unless you start where you are. — Michael Hyatt

The holiday season is one of those times when we can become apathetic about our habits and behaviors.  Life gets even busier and we decide to go ahead and surrender to defeat. Reminded of our history with failed dieting, we buckle under the intense holiday pressures and simply resolve to “get back on track” during in the New Year.

But, you don’t have to follow that track.  It’s your choice, of course.  Many people fool themselves into believing that creating boundaries and establishing healthy habits means no fun and zero treats – the ultimate holiday disappointment.

Well, it could look like that, but it doesn’t have to…

Let’s envision what healthy boundaries and intentional choices could provide you,

  • Freedom to let your “yes” be “yes” and your “no” be “no”
  • Elimination of food guilt
  • Enjoying a treat with pleasure instead of shame

The power of 1 bite, 1 step, 1 action, 1 moment of mindfulness – God gives you the ability to exert power in your life through choices.  But, He doesn’t tell you to do it alone.

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline (2 Timothy 1:7, NIV).

God has given you power.  Here is what happens when you use it to help you win:

Small consistent choices create habits.

Every time you put down the fork when you are satisfied, get up 15 minutes earlier to workout, or take a few minutes during the middle of the day to do some deep breathing, you are working to establish a habit.  Every single time you choose this practice, you are making it just a tiny bit easier for the next time.

The famous anonymous quote identifying the definition of insanity, “doing something over and over again and expecting different results” makes one really consider expectations and true reality.

ACTION STEP: Identify your expectation for your health, weight, and eating habits this holiday season.  Choose 1 healthy habit to practice consistently this year.

Small steps make the big goal less overwhelming.

If you are breathing, you have felt overwhelmed.  It is a natural emotional response to an abundance of perceived expectations and stimuli.  Once you begin to believe that 1 bite or 1 step could actually be significant, the idea of piling up a bunch of small choices feels empowering and liberating.

ACTION STEP: Each morning, ask God to help direct your focus to 1 small goal and surrender any feelings of distress or angst.

It’s not just a physical change – it’s mental.

Training your brain is a critical step in changing your behaviors.  It’s about learning to accept ‘different.’

It might look different to leave a bite or 2 on your plate.  It might sound different to decline dessert when questioned the third time by your great aunt.  It might be different to take a water bottle with you everywhere you go.  It might feel different to leave the family gathering without any heavy leftovers in hand.

Become okay with new.  Learn to like different.  It begins with renewing your mind…

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but be a new and different person with a fresh newness in all you do and think. Then you will learn from your own experience how his ways will really satisfy you (Romans 12:2).

ACTION STEP: Begin every day with truth.  Don’t allow the day to begin without 1 truth to meditate on throughout the day.

So, what’s the play call?

What you do every day matters more than what you do every once in awhile. — Anonymous

Holidays, vacation, football – there will always be seasons that provide distractions, a mountain of stress, and the potential opportunity to invite a spirit of guilt, apathy or shame.  Don’t allow yourself to become overwhelmed by trying to hit a big weight or health goal.  Go back to the basics and ask God to help you:

  1. Continue small, consistent steps.
  2. Focus on 1 goal you can do today.
  3. Renew your mind to accept what is new or different.

Listen, son of mine, to what I say. Listen carefully. Keep these thoughts ever in mind; let them penetrate deep within your heart, for they will mean real life for you and radiant health (Proverbs 4:20-22).

When Starting Off Right Turns Left: 4 Ways to Get Back On Track

process

In the Beginning

youtube I did it! I was brave, too. Yep… I let YouTube talk me into thinking I was a hair stylist again (go ahead and laugh). You know you’ve watched YouTube tutorials before and fully believed that you could conquer the world. YouTube will have you fixing your plumbing, cooking a 5-piece gourmet meal, and building a 17-bedroom house with twelve bathrooms LOL!

Anyhoo… I watched this hair twist tutorial like 3 times before I attempted it. It looked easy enough, so I went to the beauty supply store and purchased the stuff I needed and went home.

Now, in this particular tutorial, the instructor tells us to twist each section to the right to tighten around the hair, then continue twisting to the right. One simple instruction… “always twist to the right.”

What did I do, you ask? Well, I twisted each section to the right, then began twisting to the left. Now, understandably, I did this when I first began because it didn’t click. But, my problem came in when I continued making the same mistake. Three different times, I twisted to the right, then again, then continued to the left. Once I twisted to the left, it loosened the beginning of my twists. This caused the entire hairdo to be ruined. I became frustrated with getting it wrong. I quit at least 7 times in the first three minutes.

Don’t Get Stuck in the Middle

voice of godHow many times have we started off “right” – and gone left? We get the foundation set and start down the path and then take that wrong turn – though we’ve heard the directions numerous times. I mean, I definitely heard her say “always twist right” and I definitely did not follow her instructions.

There are bound to be times when things just don’t click. Even in Kirk Franklin’s, Now Behold The Lamb, one of the verses says “I went left, You told me to go right.”

This is true for so many of us in so many situations. And naturally, we get frustrated with ourselves and the circumstances we are surrounded by. I know I do. And, I threaten to quit and give it all up. It’s okay to admit it.

So, What’s the Play Call?

We’re human. We aren’t perfect. God does not expect us to be, in fact, He knows when we will slip up. The key is not to be like me while starting my homemade hairdo, and “continue” going in the wrong direction. Here are a few things to help you detour back to your “right”:

  1. Let the Holy Spirit be your GPS. Always seek God on which direction to go and what path to take. “And they went every one straight forward: whither the spirit was to go, they went; and they turned not when they went.” Ezekiel 1:12
  2. Just Ask. Often, when driving, I am leery of asking strangers for directions. Well, God is no stranger and He is waiting to lead you. “Shew me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths.” Psalms 25:4
  3. Stop following your heart. I know… I know… who am I to tell you not to follow your heart. Just look at it this way, our hearts are what must be changed by God and our hearts are also what cause us to get into many of the sticky situations that we find ourselves in. “My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion forever.” Psalms 73:26
  4. Fully trust and follow God. We may get off track, but we can always trust Him to get us where we should be. “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5

One thing I want you to remember – no matter how many lefts you take, if you look to God, He will always lead you right.

Bird Box, Porn, and Lust Spirits: 5 Chirps That May Save Your Life

porn

The Eye is the Lamp of the Body

bird box porn

Within a week of its release on Netflix, the thriller Bird Box is well on its way to becoming a cult classic. According to Nielsen ratings, Bird Box reached an unduplicated audience of nearly 26 million viewers within its first 7 days of availability (Dec. 21 to Dec. 27).

While the funny memes inspired by the movie cracked me up (e.g. here and here), I was likewise intrigued as Team Jesus, i.e. “church folk”, chimed in with their interpretations, biblical parallels, and funny videos.

If you haven’t seen the film, here’s a brief synopsis: When a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, only one thing is certain: If you look at it, you take your life. Malorie’s (Sandra Bullock) last ditch effort for her freedom and two small children is a 2-day journey down a river, blindfolded, to the one place left that may offer sanctuary. She realizes the only warning system she has to alert her that the “forces” are near is the screeching chirp of the birds.

By my second viewing, even I could see a parallel that perhaps only a few would understand – or dare to acknowledge within themselves as relevant:

The dark forces in Bird Box could easily represent the spirits of lust that entangle followers of Christ with pornography – an addiction, bondage, and shame that can sabotage and cause one to murder his/her abundant life in Jesus Christ. These spirits are always trying to get you to “look”, with the promise that “it’s beautiful, you’ve got to see it.” The birds, or Holy Spirit, constantly warn us to walk by faith and “cover our eyes”, as He guides us to the refuge of the Most High.

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell: The Hidden Porn Problem in the Body of Christ

pornMore Christians – men, women, church leaders, young people – are struggling with the attraction or addiction to porn than ever before. Yet, it’s hardly a topic you hear during Bible studies – and even more scarce during family discussions.

Check out some of the statistical research by Barna in their 2016 landmark study, “The Porn Phenomenon“:

  • The average age of a child’s first exposure to pornography is between 8 and 9.
  • 3 out of 5 divorces cite the use of porn as a major factor.
  • Pornography use increases the marital infidelity rate by more than 300 percent.
  • 62% of teenagers (ages 13-17) have received a sexual image via their cell phones.
  • 72% of Christian young adults (ages 18-24) actively seek out pornography on the internet.
  • 88% of Pastors believe porn is a major issue in their church, yet only 7% provide programs for those struggling with pornography.

Team, this silent, hidden sickness has got to be spiritually eradicated. The warfare of lust is one of the most effective tools of our enemy, especially when we’re sad, bored, depressed, frustrated, disappointed – the hunger for porn will show up for all of these reasons, or no reason at all. And, we can’t ignore the effects of pornography and the proliferation of rape and molestation in society today. Porn is not your friend, it is not to be played with.

5 Chirps That May Guide You to Freedom from Porn

As you read the “chirps” below, examine yourself and find your WHY, your reason to seek help if you struggle with pornography, or your reason to flee and stay free from porn’s grip. The Truth will expose the deceiving whispers of principalities and the rulers of darkness (Ephesians 6:12), as well as the lies we tell ourselves. Truth, make us free…

Chirp #1: It grieves the Holy Spirit to share your temple with lust.

Nothing brings more confusion to life than 2 roommates who are the total opposite of each other and have nothing in common. The Holy Spirit is pure, clean, He is the Spirit of Truth. Lust keeps our minds and bodies filthy and is infected with lies, manipulation, and deception. Our bodies are not our own – our temples are the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). Strive to give the Holy Spirit a temple fit for the Divine Comforter.

Chirp #2: Run to the Word when the spirit of lust stirs.

When those “leaves of lust” begin to stir and you’re searching for a place of refuge, remember that God’s Word will be your hiding place (Psalm 32:7). Nothing kills the “buzz” of lust faster than entering in the presence of God. Can you worship the living God and watch porn at the same time? Is the dark spirit of lust more powerful than our light and salvation in Jesus Christ? Pick up your Bible and begin to read it. Go to YouTube and play your favorite worship song. Fill your space with the glory of God.

Chirp #3: Taking pleasure while others sin qualifies you for the same punishment.

“I wasn’t doing it, I was just watching.” Did you ever try this line with your parents? You weren’t doing the deed, but you were somewhere in the vicinity – egging it on, laughing, “approving” of the behavior. That excuse doesn’t go well with our earthly parents, so you know our Heavenly Father – who sees our heart – will not give us a pass either. Romans 1:32 tells us that when we “take pleasure” in the sinful deeds of others, we’re just as worthy of death as the ones doing the deeds! We won’t escape because we “only looked.” (Psalm 101:3) God requires us to flee – run away – from lust, not entertain it (2 Timothy 2:22).

Chirp #4: Can you lead the porn stars you’ve watched in prayer, or lead them to Christ?

Individuals who are in the porn industry are more than mere objects of pleasure – they are human beings who God loves and gave His Son to die on the cross for their sins. After watching them on that website, movie, or chat room – could you ever lead her or him to Christ? Could you honestly and in “good” faith pray for them after the images you’ve taken pleasure in? Let nothing stifle or damage your witness for God. Guard your eyes and your heart (Proverbs 4:23).

Chirp #5: As you get closer to freedom, beware of familiar voices.

In Bird Box, after Malorie and the kids beat the river and arrived in the woods, the force’s greatest deception was that of familiar voices. As you make small wins toward your freedom from porn, don’t listen to the familiar voices – those who will tell you “there’s nothing wrong with a little peek“, or “pornography is a marital aid – the bed is undefiled.” These voices may be enticing in your vulnerable state, and they may even come from people you know and love. Keep a prayer of discernment in your heart and a focus on deliverance and living porn-free no matter how “beautiful” others say the bondage is.

So, What’s the Play Call?

Deliverance from pornography and lust spirits takes work – repentance, consecration, staying woke about the enemy’s devices, a steady discipline of prayer, reading the Word, and fasting. Whether your deliverance takes weeks, months, years, or God breaks the struggle in an instant – know that greater is He, Jesus Christ, than any lust spirit in the world (1 John 4:4). You have the right and the power to be free and stay free.

Church leaders, prayerfully develop programs and resources for your congregations. Create safe, non-judgmental spaces for people to acknowledge the “porn thorn” and get the help they need. Here are a few resources for further consideration:

Your Sins Can Never Void God’s Gift of Salvation

The Gift of Salvation Never Expires

giftHave you ever felt unworthy of God’s love? Do you believe that your past actions or current behaviors are so sinful that God will not forgive you, or He’ll withdraw His offer of salvation to you?

I write these words because I have had conversations with people – some friends, some strangers – about this very topic over the years and it’s apparent to me that they were misled. It’s not their fault, though. When you look at a lot of Christians and their “better than thou” attitudes, one would think that having a relationship with God requires perfection.

That is so far from the truth!  All you need to begin having a relationship with God is the desire and honesty – God will meet you right there.

Hope for Salvation

crucify himThe first thing you need to know is that God “wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth” (1 Timothy 2:4 NLT).  And, by “everyone”, God means everyone.

God is talking about people from all walks of life, every ethnicity, every socioeconomic class, every education level – all people who sin (which is everyone who still has breath in their lungs).

One of my favorite verses in all the Bible is when Jesus was questioned by the Pharisees (these were people who taught on religion) as to why He would eat with sinners. Jesus replied, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do.  I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners” (Mark 2:17 NLT).  If God only wanted a relationship with righteous people, He would have never sent Jesus to die on the cross to allow sinners to have a relationship with God and to be able to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.

If you are reading this message, then there is still hope for you.  The only reason you aren’t in this relationship with God yet is because you are running from the call of Jesus or you haven’t recognized the call as what it really is. Jesus is waiting for you to come to Him.  Jesus says in Revelation 3:20-21, “Look! I stand at the door and knock.  If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.  Those who are victorious will sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat with my father on His throne.”  I know that if you are reading this it is because you have heard the knock, but maybe you aren’t sure if it is the voice of Jesus behind that door. Maybe you aren’t sure what your next steps should be.

The best thing that you’ll ever do in life is to open that door.

So, What’s The Play Call?

  • The first thing that you’re going to want to do is answer the call of Jesus by opening that door immediately. Don’t hesitate to let Jesus into your life.  It’s time to stop questioning and start doing.
  • Confess all of the sins that you can think of to God and ask for forgiveness. “If we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness” (1 John 1:9 NLT).  God knows what you’ve done without you telling Him – your confession is simply an act of obedience and proof that you are ready to enter a relationship with God based on honesty and openness.
  • If you’ve never been saved, you must “believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31 NLT).  “And when you believed in Christ, He identified you as His own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom He promised long ago.  The Spirit is God’s guarantee that He will give us the inheritance He promised and that He has purchased us to be His own people.  He did this so we would praise and glorify Him” (Ephesians 1:13-14 NLT).
  • If you have already been saved, but have separated yourself from God for any reason, God is waiting for you, too!  Isaiah 55:7 (ESV) says, “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that He may have compassion on him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.”  You are known by God and your actions did not catch Him by surprise. He just wants that relationship with you to be back and stronger than ever. Repent and pick up where you left off.
  • Be patient with yourself.  Leaving a sinful life behind can take some time. I highly recommend finding a church that not only preaches but teaches the Word of God in truth.  The more you know, the more you will progress into righteous living.

5 Tips to Work Your New Year Goals, Not Just Talk About Them

new year

Do the Work!

As the new year begins, it seems that all thoughts are pointing toward a fresh start. Optimism is renewed and confident expectation for the future is evident.

I’m sure you’ve already heard people around you talking about getting in shape after the holidays. Then, there’s the conversation about saving more money and finally getting out of debt. Others vow that the new year will be their year to get organized.

Everyone loves this idea:

What lies ahead will be better
than what has been.

While all of this talk about the New Year isn’t a bad thing, the simple act of flipping a calendar page from December to January will not change you.

Let’s be real, Team. If you have not taken the time to develop the discipline necessary to commit to going to the gym at 5 a.m. in 2018, on January 1, 2019 the “fitness anointing” will probably not overshadow you.

If you did not set a budget before the month of January, chances are you will not be successful in reaching your savings goals.

If you’re looking for something magical to happen simply because it’s a new month, think again!

Early New Year’s Intervention

If you’ve fallen short in reaching your goals in the past, all hope is not lost!

Here are 5 quick tips to help you reach your goals for the new year:

1. Change your mind.

Authentic and lasting change begins with our thoughts.  If we are going to be successful in reaching our goals in 2019 we must renew our minds in the Word of God (Romans 12:2).  He has already given us the power and ability to be self-disciplined (2 Timothy 1:7).  It is up to us to use the power that He has given us to make positive changes in our lives.

2. Know your “why”.

Take some time and think about why you want to reach a particular goal. This step will help you to regain your focus as the year wears on. It will be your reason not to give up when things get difficult. This step is vitally important.

3. Know the price of achievement.

Consider the cost of what you’d like to accomplish (Luke 14:28-30). What will you have to give up? What adjustments will you need to make in your schedule? You will need a plan. Write down the steps it will take to reach your goal.  Your plan should be broken down into small, daily tasks. The simpler the daily tasks the better.  Consistent effort produces amazing results!

4. Consider an accountability partner.

Tell someone about your goal and have them hold you accountable.  Have an end of the week check-in to monitor your progress. This is an additional way of ensuring your success. Ideally, this person will help keep you motivated and will celebrate your wins with you.

5. Be gracious to yourself.

Extend yourself a little grace and patience; don’t be so hard on yourself.  You did not get where you are in one day. The process of making a life change is something that happens gradually, over time.

So, what’s the play call?

The secret to accomplishing your goals this year is simple:

Show up every day and DO THE WORK!
