3 Embarrassing Ways Christians Let the Devil Win “Employee of the Month”

Last night’s 59th annual Grammy® Awards shifted into a mini worship service when the winner for Best New Artist, Best Rap Performance, and Best Rap Album, Chance the Rapper, took the stage with Kirk Franklin and Tamela Mann (both winners of the evening).

“How great is our God, sing with me, how great is our God!”

Kicked off with Chris Tomlin’s anthem, “How Great is our God”, the collaboration on Chance’s single, How Great, exploded on stage with full orchestra and choir. But, what was the real stand-out feature of the performance for me?

The genius lyrics.

“Devil will win employee of the
month by the dozen /
Til one score and three years from the third when he doesn’t…”

While Internet prophets and rap interpreters reason together on the meaning of those “bars”, let’s talk a little bit about how the devil wins Employee of the Month.

Is he really winning? And if yes, did you play a part? Where are we not showing up – dressed, trained, and ready for the game?

The Wins We Often Forfeit

Did you know that the enemy needs your permission, your cooperation to come out on top –  day-to-day, month-to-month (“by the dozen”)? Know that greater is He, Jesus Christ, who lives in us (1 John 4:4), and we are children of an unbeatable, undefeated God.

And if that’s not enough, as the body of Christ, our lives are hidden with Christ in God (Colossians 3:3), and there are no surprise attacks by the enemy that aren’t first vetted by the Father (Job 1:12).

Still, this Christian life takes work. Following Jesus Christ is not for punks.

While we are training and developing discipline in prayer, fasting, time spent with God, the devil and his team are on the prowl hard at work trying to destroy us (1 Peter 5:8).

You do realize that there are no coffee breaks in the fight of faith, right? There are no vacation days from serving God. Likewise, do you think the devil and company take smoke breaks (no pun), saying, “We’ll give the church a break this week, we won’t bother them.”

So, what role do we play when it seems like the enemy is winning? As we work out our salvation (Philippians 2:12), where are the holes in our performance, quality, timeliness – whereas the devil is on his game? In what situations do we drop the ball for the devil to steal and make a slam dunk?

Here are 3 areas in our lives to watch and avoid the embarrassment of giving the enemy the win.

1. Avoiding Responsibility

“The dog ate my homework” was barely cute in grade school. In the body of Christ, “the devil made me do it” – not taking ownership and responsibility for our actions places the enemy in a false position of power. How many times have we gone to God, like Adam (Genesis 3:12), and attempted to place blame on others for our own decisions?

Take your power back – even in your mistakes, Team! When we confess “I did it”, God is faithful and just to forgive us (1 John 1:9). Own your lessons and learn from them. Only then, will you grow stronger and be able to help others overcome the devil by your testimony (Revelation 12:11).

2. Believing the Lies

Like all worthy opponents, the devil talks trash.  He knows your weaknesses. The enemy knows what buttons to push. And, throughout the day, he strategically drops hints – thoughts and imaginations in your head that are in direct opposition to what God thinks and says about us.

Don’t believe the lies! When you do, you adopt the mindset of the enemy in agreement with his words. And, if the devil’s mind is made up to “devour” you, you’ll soon find yourself sharpening his teeth for the meal…and you’re the main course!

Counter every lie like our Coach has taught us – with every word that comes from the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4).

3. Living All Faith, No Action

Talk is cheap, Team. Same goes for “faith” talk. Do you have a good faith “talk game”, but no action? Are you riddled with apathy, and allergic to action?

So many in the body of Christ today are infected with dead faith. Our friends or co-workers are living defeated lives, but we’re afraid to share Jesus Christ. People are suffering from real poverty and social injustice, and we simply offer “I’ll be praying for you” or “God is in control.”

The devil is not afraid of your action-less faith. Show the enemy your works. Do something! Back up the scriptures you quote with a life of action that aligns with good works.

So, What’s the Play Call?

Honor God in excellence.

Whatever you say or do, do it for God’s glory in the name of the Lord (Colossians 3:17). With God’s glory as your constant focus, the spirit of excellence (not perfection) will guide you on the path to growth and strength to overcome the enemy every time.

Lecrae on “Blessings” and What the Body of Christ Often Overlooks

Count it Up

Can you remember the days of driving your car with little to no gas – laying hands on the dashboard to reach your destination? Have you ever had bills stacked so high, you had to rob Peter to pay Paul, and Paul still came up short? Or, perhaps you, too, grew up on fried bologna sandwiches, like the 2-time Grammy®, 7-time GMA Dove award-winning president of Reach Records, Lecrae.

Better yet, ever consider that your worst days would have been someone else’s best days?

Lecrae’s latest single, “Blessings“, featuring Ty Dolla $ign, has been lighting up the airways since its drop on January 27th. Slated to appear on his next album, the first project after partnering with Columbia Records, “Blessings” is a reminder to us all to count it up!

A modern-day King David with fierce hip-hop swag, Lecrae’s “Blessings” echoes what Psalm 103:2-5 has emphasized throughout the ages – don’t forget God’s many blessings!

How Could We Forget His Blessings?

David and Lecrae are on to something. We need the reminder. Unfortunately, it’s rather easy sometimes for us to forget how far God has brought us. And, when our major blessings and motion picture testimonies fade with time – when we’re no longer scraping, struggling, and crying out to God for a breakthrough – we’re often too complacent or familiar with the calm to recognize our common graces.

We caught up with Lecrae at the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration; here’s what he had to share:

So, What’s the Play Call?

Don’t forget the common blessings God gives you. Remember that “it could always be worse”. Think about the blessing of breath before you use your breath to complain.

Make the intentional choice to find the blessing in every lesson. Every hardship shines with a golden nugget for us to take with us for the journey ahead.

Try a daily Gratitude Jar – write down something you’re grateful for every day, and place it in a jar. At the end of the year, COUNT IT UP! Your blessings will undoubtedly outnumber your bad days.

Keep yourself encouraged! Support artists with uplifting messages, like Lecrae. Get your copy of “Blessings” on Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, and other digital outlets.

In Sickness and in Health: What’s Your Bedside Manner?

in sickness and in health

It’s been said, Cleavers, that the only thing that should take place in your bedroom is sex and sleep.

Well, recently I brought the dreaded “S” into our bedroom for a good 10 days: Sickness.

Due to physical exertion, I triggered pre-existing nerve damage causing a flair up of sciatica. Plus, since I always want to out-do myself, I also pulled a major muscle in my left side.

Fortunately, this is not our first rodeo with sickness. We have switched roles between patient and caregiver several times during the marriage journey.  I can hear my husband saying “you are a walking accident waiting to happen; you know you’re too fragile to keep up with me.  I am the brawn, stick to being the brain.”

There’s a little truth to all he said, whether I like it or not. Now, the doctor’s orders are 10 days of bed rest to decrease the swelling to get back to 100%.

For many of you reading, we know how we usually pick which parts of the doctor’s orders we will follow.  That’s why my good caregiver is going to ensure I am obedient to 100% of the doctor’s recommendation.

The Word of God tells us:

To do what is right is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.” Proverb 21:3

Likewise, if we don’t want to sacrifice our health, we must learn to follow ALL of the doctor’s instructions.

How’s Your Relationship Bedside Manner?

Are you able to receive instructions as the patient? Are you able to administer the instructions as a loving caregiver?

In order for the marriage to stay healthy while one spouse is ill, both the caregiver and the patient have to carry their weight.

Within your marriage, you want more good days than bad, right? Well, the bad days are promised, but the key is how will you work through the bad days together.

The Patient’s  Role

As the patient, you have the privilege of receiving the desired bedside manner you need, but also the duty to receive and carry out the instructions given by your caregiving mate. Patients have to be DOERS of instruction (James 1:22).  What’s the ideal way to interact with your spouse?

Have Patience.

Even as much as your mate knows about you, s/he is not a mind reader.  Be clear about your needs, limitations, and what you are expecting of them during your period of illness.  It may be a new situation for them; give them time to adjust to the new arrangements with a good attitude.

Don’t be Selfish or Self-Centered.

It is not all about you!  Yes, you are the patient, but you are still a part of a relationship. Don’t become so absorbed in your needs and wants during this period. Be sure to take time to encourage your mate to continue self-care so they will have the strength and stamina to take care of you.

Do What You Can for Yourself.

Allowing or requiring someone to wait on you hand and foot is tempting, but not expedient. Zero movement on your part puts increased, unnecessary responsibility on your mate. After a period of time, this could possibly turn them into a patient. And you wouldn’t want that, right? Try not to become an unnecessary burden (2 Corinthians 8:13).

The Caregiver’s Role

The caregiver is given the opportunity to be nurturing and serve their mate. Even if it’s a stretch for you to be nurturing, see this season as a growth opportunity to step up to what the new situation requires. How can a caregiver maintain a helpful attitude?

Put on the Patient’s Shoes.

“If this was me…” Well, it’s not you. Caregivers have to step out of themselves and have empathy for the patient. Treat your spouse as the individual they are, not how you would want to be treated, or how you would handle the situation.

Don’t Judge Your Spouse’s Pain.

You may have had or been through the same diagnosis, but it’s important to remember that everyone does not have the same thresholds or tolerance as another. Allow the patient spouse to establish the schedule of medications that fit their pain needs, as long as they stay within the guidelines of the doctor’s orders.

Do More Than Asked.

To eliminate feeling annoyed with a barrage of requests, think ahead of all upcoming needs and group them together. For instance, when bringing medicine, go ahead and bring water and food to coordinate three steps into one.

Be careful, patients and caregivers. Do not to get stuck in these roles! Allow yourself to recognize the transition back into the good days, and not become stuck in the behaviors and role play of sickness.

So, What’s the Play Call?

In sickness and in health, continue to show love.  This is the time when your actions should speak even louder!

Recognize the limitations of your mate to reduce re-occurring damage. Be their keeper and help them not to endanger themselves.

Recognize if you need outside help. This situation may be beyond your ability to nurture them back to health alone. Seek experts to deal with mental or physical disabilities that require a lifetime of re-adjustment. Get the assistance and skills needed to cope with the change.

Celebration of Life for Bishop Eddie Long

Legacy of a General

bishop eddie longToday, thousands of family, friends, and congregants from near and far gathered at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church to celebrate the life and ministry of Bishop Eddie L. Long. Reflections and fond memories were shared during civic and community tributes by former Georgia Governor Roy Barnes, Civil Rights Leader and Trumpet Awards founder, Xernona Clayton, and friend, football Hall of Famer, Deion Sanders, including tributes from ministry leaders and the family.

We were honored to pay our respects along with thousands of worshippers in the congregation; we all faithfully followed the instructions of the worship leader:

“This is a time for celebration and worship, not mourning.”

Uplifting and moving songs by the New Birth Memorial Choir, which overflowed from the choir loft onto the stage, set the jubilant tone for the homegoing service.

The service began with Bishop Long lying in state, donned in white regalia, his cross, and rings – which were removed and given to First Lady Elder Vanessa Long.

The church was encouraged to have the proper perspective about his attire: “Bishop is dressed to meet the King. A bishop is the prince in the church, so he is dressed to meet the King as a member of the royal priesthood.”

Bishop’s casket was soon removed from the sanctuary at the family’s request so that the congregation would know that the moment was about Jesus – not a time to focus on Bishop Long.

Eulogized by long-time friend and brother in the ministry, Bishop Neil C. Ellis, the New Birth family was encouraged to keep the Kingdom vision that God had given to Bishop Long alive:

“Keep the standard high, keep the vision fresh, keep the cross in view.” – Bishop Ellis

The legacy of Bishop Eddie Long will live on in the countless lives he touched with the gospel of Jesus Christ and service to others.

Here’s one of our favorite clips of Bishop Long and the fruit of his ministry, winning souls to Christ:

The days ahead will be challenging for the Long and New Birth family. Our prayers to all that God would be close, and provide comfort, healing, and strength.

Is There a Heaven for a Gangster, or You?

heaven for a gangster

“…At one time you all had your backs turned to God, thinking rebellious thoughts of him, giving him trouble every chance you got. But now, by giving himself completely at the Cross, actually dying for you, Christ brought you over to God’s side and put your lives together, whole and holy in his presence. You don’t walk away from a gift like that! You stay grounded and steady in that bond of trust, constantly tuned in to the Message, careful not to be distracted or diverted…” Colossians 1:21-23 (MSG)

Is There a Heaven for a Gangster?

Or a murderer? Or a prostitute? Or a scammer? Or an adulterer? Or an {insert your –er}?

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: Yes, but repentance is required.

Let’s talk about repentance for a bit.

It’s a big word, ten letters in all. It sounds like something a preacher would holler from the pulpit in the midst of a hellfire and brimstone sermon. It would sound pretty scary to a sinner like me, before I knew better.

Repentance simply means to change your mind.

It’s not a change your mind, like, “I want apple pie. Better yet, let me get sweet potato pie. Or pecan pie. Maybe.”

It means to decide to allow the Holy Spirit to change your mind about the things that are drawing you away from God. It means to submit your heart so that those things that used to appeal to the desires of your heart would never appeal to you again.

Now, about those gangsters and murderers and scammers and prostitutes and adulterers…

The New Testament G’s

Saul was both a gangster and a murderer. Bartimeus was a scammer and a tax collector.  Mary Magdelene was a prostitute.

Yet, God still invited them all to follow Him.

Y’all do remember that Saul used to persecute people who followed Jesus, kill them and/or throw them in jail, right? BUT GOD offered him the invitation to follow Him. And Saul said, YES!

And that’s the key. Heaven for any of us depends on if we put down our old life and say YES. I don’t care what you’ve done – and neither does God.

According to Revelation 22:17, there is always an invitation available. It doesn’t matter if people think you’re undeserving, Jesus says come! Crip, Blood, Latin King – Come! It doesn’t matter if you yourself think that your life has been a series of anti-God decisions, Come! Stripping, selling your body, selling dope, selling stolen goods, Jesus says, “Come!”

What’s Your RSVP for Heaven?

All He asks is that you allow the Holy Spirit to change your mind about your old life and choose a new life in Him.

“Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have THE RIGHT to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city.” Rev 22:14 (NIV)

Jesus died for our sins. This is true. He died so that our sins would be forgiven. It’s unconditional. But remember when Jesus meets the woman at the well who has had 5 husbands and is fooling around with boyfriend #6? He tells her to go and sin no more. She says YES in her actions – runs off to tell people about the man she met who told her all about her life.

So, yes. There is a heaven for a gangster and anyone else who has lived a life that resembles hell on earth. But, the same loyalty that was given to the old lifestyle will now be required in the new.

So, What’s the Play Call?

Work out your own soul salvation with all seriousness and urgency. Meditate on and apply 2 Chronicles 7:14 to your life this week, it reads:

If my people who belong to me will humbly pray, seek my face, and turn (repent) from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.”

5 Things the Christian Church in America Can Learn from Muslim Converts

church

Muslims are converting to Christianity by the thousands.

Last year’s Momentum Conference, hosted by the Voice of the Martyrs (Canada), featured persecuted Christian speakers from around the world, and highlighted the growth spurt of the church in Muslim countries and communities, undoubtedly at a higher rate than in America.

Consider the recent State of the Church report published by research firm Barna in September 2016. The report highlights that approximately 73% of Americans identify as Christian, that there’s an overall decline in America’s church attendance, and how only 46% of American Christians believe they have a duty to share their faith.

International Christian worker and evangelist, Bassma Dabbour Jaballah, was one speaker at Momentum, who works on the front lines of sharing Jesus Christ in the very Muslim communities she was raised.

muslim convertsKnowing full well the risks and the ultimate cost of converting to Christianity, Muslims are being exposed to the love and liberty that is the embodiment of Jesus Christ, accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior – even at the threat of losing their families, jobs, friends, heritage…their lives.

Winning Souls Who Have the Most to Lose

Brothers and sisters in Christ with Muslim backgrounds, like Bassma, risk their lives to share Jesus Christ in countries where the name of Jesus is not welcomed.

“Unspeakable peace, unspeakable joy prompts you to share Jesus everywhere.”
– Bassma Dabbour Jaballah

Watch this interview with Teammate Bassma as she shares the freedom to follow and share Jesus:

After hearing her heart and listening to her sermons and interviews, I noticed a stark difference between the passion and commitment of Muslim converts to Christianity and the Christian church in America.

Our brothers and sisters in Christ who are living or serving in Christian-hostile countries are steadfast and unmovable!  With scarce resources, little to no theological education, and zero public platforms, Muslim converts are living faithful lives that honor Christ under the most extreme circumstances.

Story after story, testimonies abound

David Garrison, a missionary pioneer with the Southern Baptist International Mission Board, has traveled to every corner of the Muslim world. The purpose of his work is to research the conversion from Islam to Christianity and interview courageous Muslim converts.

Sheikh Hasan is one such convert from the Horn of Africa. He shares his conversion experience with Garrison:

‘An African evangelist gave me an Injil (New Testament) in the Arabic language. Because the Injil was in Arabic, God’s language, I knew that it must be true, so I began to read it.’ That night Hasan had a dream. ‘I saw a tall minaret. I was disturbed to see a man with an ax chopping the minaret down. When I looked closer, I saw that the man…was me!’

The shock of the dream awakened the sheikh in a panic. ‘I had the same dream three times,’ he said. ‘The next day, I found the evangelist who had given me the Injil. “What does this dream mean?” I demanded. He looked at me and smiled. “You will win many sheikhs to faith in Jesus Christ.”

Today, Sheikh Hasan travels from village to village, speaking to sheikhs, who are leaders of the Islamic community. ‘So far,’ he told me, ‘I have led 400 sheikhs to faith in Jesus Christ.’

Has the threat of violence, poverty, or death slowed down Bassma or Hasan?

We know the body of Christ in America has not seen the turmoil of our brothers and sisters in MENA. But what will be our response when we do?

Can the church in America afford to be complacent and believe that Christian persecution only happens “over there”? Have we not seen the handwriting on the wall – how America has become more hostile to Christian values and Biblical standards?

The time is now for the church in America to take a page from our Muslim-background brothers and sisters. Though some are even babes in Christ, they carry the gospel with such bravery and boldness. It puts the church in America to shame.

Christian Characteristics of Muslim Converts – What Can We Learn?

Let’s not simply look at persecuted Christians in Muslim countries with admiration and no action. What patterns of Christian living have these converts mastered, that if we were honest, we can admit we still have work to do? How can their iron sharpen us?

Here are 5 Christian lifestyle characteristics or convictions I’ve noticed, and I encourage us all to take prayerful notes and implement any needed change:

1. Win others with love.

Christian workers in Muslim countries have a keen understanding of the word serve, and their service in love, with emphasis in combating social injustice, is what draws people away from Islam to Christ. But, not only their love to those they’re trying to win, but they have deep honor and respect for one another (John 13:35). They are unified in the work of faith, which wins the trust of those to whom they witness.

Do Christians in America stand united against social injustice? Can the church in America effectively win souls for Christ divided and bickering? When we attack and dishonor each other, will the world run to our doorsteps to receive this Jesus we preach about?

2. Glory in persecution.

Muslim converts enter the family of God under the threat of imminent persecution. There is no reprieve, no grace period – upon hearing of their conversion, they can face the immediate penalty of death. Oh, but what honor they find in being persecuted for the risen Savior (Matthew 5:10-12)! Many have been beaten and jailed for their faith in Jesus Christ, released, and go right back to proclaiming the gospel!

Are Christians in America equipped to handle persecution for Christ’s sake, when many of us barely maintain our faith when faced with gossip? How often does the church in America ascribe persecution as a “trick of the enemy” vs. an honor and privilege?

3. Honor discipleship training.

When asked how the church can pray for those on the front line, Bassma replies, “There is a need for discipleship training and resources… When the Christians are trained and disciples, they have a huge impact on their Muslim neighbors who are seekers.” The plight for souls does not end at the sinner’s prayer. Muslim-background evangelists understand the need for actual training that will build the faith of new converts, and replicate the process of evangelism with new witnesses.

Does the church in America place enough emphasis on discipleship training? Are new converts even interested? Has the American church painted the picture that “receiving Christ as Lord and Savior” is the end of the story? How does your church prepare members for witnessing or evangelism?

4. Come as little children.

Bassma says, “It doesn’t need too much theological understanding to follow Jesus. That’s why He called us to be like the little children.”  The simplicity of salvation – confess that Jesus is Lord and God raised Him from the dead – is available to all who hear it. From there, like a loving Father, God will nurture and increase that seed to maturity.

Do we in the American church add too many restrictions, requirements, and clauses to accepting Jesus Christ? Do we accelerate babes in Christ to unrealistic levels of knowledge and duty – becoming stumbling blocks to the work of Jesus Christ in them?

5. Pray without ceasing.

Muslims have mastered the discipline of prayer, with the call to pray five times per day. The seed of prayer is well instilled in the life of Muslim converts to Christianity, for most since childhood. Though former prayers to Allah are now prayers to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the understanding of the importance and power of prayer still rings true in the life of these believers.

When’s the last time you or members of your church had a massive turnout for a prayer service? How many times per day, per week do you pray? Is the house of God in America a house of prayer, or so many other things (den of thieves)?

So, What’s the Play Call?

Check your commitment to Jesus Christ. Ask God if there are places in your heart, in your life that you haven’t fully committed to Him. Then, fully re-commit all that you are to God.

Be loyal to the end, Team.  As our sister, Bassma, puts it, “The peace, the joy of eternal life…it’s worth the price.”

Please pray without ceasing for persecuted Christians all over the world.

Rest In Peace: Bishop Eddie Long Will Be Missed

Today, with profound sadness, New Birth Missionary Baptist Church announced the passing of Bishop Eddie Long, according to the AJC.

Highly regarded for his vision, boldness, and unapologetic courage to walk in the supernatural, Bishop Long will be missed as husband, father, grandfather, and more by his family, as well as a pastor and friend who was passionate about bringing souls into the body of Christ.

Team Jesus Magazine covered the release of Bishop Long’s book, “The Untold Story: A Story of Adversity, Pain and Resilience” and his 2016 appearance on the Steve Harvey Show. Even in Bishop Long’s death, the beauty of God’s redemption shines bright and rings true for all who will surrender their lives to Jesus Christ.

We personally offer our sincere condolences to the family, our friend Edward Long, and give honor to God for using Bishop Long and New Birth as a personal beacon of hope and faith during trying times in our lives.

According to the church’s statement:

New Birth Missionary Baptist Church celebrates the life and legacy of Bishop Eddie L. Long who is now spiritually healed and home with the Lord. Bishop Long, Senior Pastor of New Birth, transitioned from this life early Sunday morning after a gallant private fight with an aggressive form of cancer. As a man of God with unyielding faith, Bishop Long maintained his commitment to our Heavenly Father as he proclaimed that cancer would not kill his faith nor his spirit. First Lady Elder Vanessa Long, Bishop Long’s wife of 27 years offered the following. “I am confidant through my belief in God that my husband is now resting in a better place. Although, his transition leaves a void for those of us who loved him dearly, we can celebrate and be happy for him, knowing he’s at peace.”

Deeply committed to his church, even in his last days, Bishop Long delivered his final message to New Birth as we ushered in 2017. He told the church that God was already working in our favor and what we have been praying for was already manifested. In his departure, we receive that and as faithful members of New Birth, we praise God for the life of Bishop Long. Bishop Long was known as one of the most influential faith leaders in the world. He stood strong as a Kingdom Builder, pioneering leader, and revolutionary mind changer. Long was a family man and spiritual leader who was well respected and loved for his passion to unapologetically and courageously preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. Long inspired thousands of believers around the world through his global ministry that literally changed lives. Through his earthly battle, Bishop Long believed that God was once again using him to help others see the power of the Holy Spirit through the love New Birth displayed to him and the countless prayers sent up by others from every corner of the earth.Bishop Eddie L. Long was 63 years old. He is survived by his beautiful wife, First Lady Elder Vanessa Long, 4 children Eric, Edward, Jared and Taylor and 3 grandchildren. The Long family thanks you for your prayers, condolences and messages of love. The family appreciates your support and respect of their privacy, as they prepare along with New Birth, for the homegoing service to honor Bishop Long. The date and other details will be announced in the near future.

Please continue to keep the Long family and New Birth in your prayers during this challenging time of grief and transition.

Kim Burrell, Homosexuality, and the Fallacy of Phobia and Hate

homosexuality

If you’d planned to watch Pharrell Williams and Kim Burrell perform the song “I See a Victory” today on the Ellen Degeneres Show, you may want to consult the Guide channel for a plan B.

After a video of gospel singer and Pastor, Kim Burrell, went viral where she preaches against the sin of homosexuality and gives warnings to those who practice it in the body of Christ, the gay community lashed back with posts, comments, and videos accusing Burrell of “homophobic statements” and “hate speech”.

Let all pastors, prophets, and any follower of Christ and the Word of God be warned – if you speak on the sin of homosexuality, be prepared to expect two (2) likely consequences or reactions:

  1. You will receive angry push back or retaliation from the LGBTQ community, and be accused of being homophobic, hateful, or a bigot.
  2. God will be pleased that you stood firm on His Word as truth, and honored His divine character as author and creator of humanity.

Self-Victimization and the Fallacy of Phobia and Hate

A very strategic tactic of the enemy plays out before our eyes, not only when someone speaks on sin, but especially when someone speaks on the sin of homosexuality.

Self-victimization: the fabrication of victimhood or injury to gain pity, sympathy, or to evoke compassion.

I can understand it. Sometimes the truth hurts, it stings, or it angers. And, instead of looking inwardly and dealing with the conviction we feel, it’s easier to look externally and passively attack the messenger.

You’re hurting me” vs. “The truth hurts.”  It would even be more honest to say, “I’m mad that the Bible says what it says.”

Nonetheless, the gay community has successfully united (take note of the unity, Team) on the common response of “you’re a homophobe” or “you’re hating me” when you share your belief according to the Bible that homosexuality is a sin. Or worse, note the gay community’s hypocritical response of hate, cursing out, insults, death wishes, and more.

Private individuals, groups, and media outlets like BBC News have bought into the fallacy of phobia. It begs the questions:

When did differing beliefs
become synonymous with
“I’m afraid of you” or “I hate you”?
When did “I don’t agree or approve” become code words for hate and bigotry?

Stop it. Everyone who disagrees with you doesn’t hate you, wish you harm, or fear you.

No Fear in Love

LGBTQ community, the body of Christ is neither afraid of you, nor do we hate you. We are commanded to love you – and we do! The Word of God tells us that if we see a brother wandering from the truth in sin, and we bring them back on the right path, we have saved them from death and their sins will be forgiven (James 5:19-20).

So, when someone says “repent”, “beg God to free you”, when they say that homosexuality perverts (alters something from its original course) God’s creation and His creative authority, the only thing you’re a victim of is God’s love and someone caring enough to try to save you from death. You are free to reject it, disagree with it, but please stop telling yourselves the narrative that Christians who share what the Word of God says hate you or fear you. That’s the father of lies speaking.

Team, we must not only honor God’s order for humanity, we must and will boldly speak the Word of God – just as the LGBTQ community boldly speaks, marches, and lobbies unapologetically for what they believe.  Our rights as believers are just as important and valid as the LGBTQ community’s rights.

Kim Burrell is a Much Easier Target Than God

And so are you, Team.

When you speak the truth according to the Word of God, and it brings conviction, you will be attacked for believing and repeating what God has said. The enemy will throw everything at you to stir fear in your hearts so that you shy away from or water down the truth.

Don’t shoot the messenger! As the body of Christ, we do what we’re taught. We speak what God has said. We submit in agreement to God’s order, ways, and instruction.

And here’s the beauty: God is watching over His Word to perform it (Jeremiah 1:12). It is God’s responsibility to see to it that His words accomplish what they’re set out to do, not ours! Our job is to say what He tells us to say. The full ownership and authorship belong to God.

Always be a steadfast, willing witness of God’s Word.  Why?

Judgment Begins with Us

If you haven’t noticed, Team, here’s how the last days will play out. People will become “lovers” of themselves more than lovers of God…boastful, arrogant, proud, and blatantly disobedient (2 Timothy 3:2) – and many of these people are “Team Jesus” t-shirt-wearing church folks!

Lord, help us.

The Bible tells us that the time is coming where judgment will begin with us – inside the household of faith, the Church (1 Peter 4:17-18).

Listen, we cannot afford to be so caught up in the delivery that we miss the warnings. There will be times when “love” is spoken softly, and times when it’ll be loud and urgent!

Can you imagine the children of Israel telling Jeremiah, “Man, you talkin’ too loud…you sound like a busted trumpet!”

Umm, yeah. That’s exactly how the Lord told Jeremiah to deliver the message to His people about their sins.

Don’t adopt the pattern of the world to claim “false injury” or “victimhood” when the truth of God’s correction is spoken to you.

We are children of God. If God didn’t love us, He wouldn’t correct us (Proverbs 3:12).

Our job is to respond to God’s correction as a blessing. Don’t resent or despise the Lord’s discipline. He’s not trying to destroy you, God wants to save you!

Team! Don’t lose it when #God corrects you. Accept the #love, and come through better!

God our Father loves us far too much to let us continue down a path that will eventually separate us from Him forever. As painful as discipline may be, that’s something we can all be thankful and appreciate God for in the long run.

So, What’s the Play Call?

Don’t shrink, don’t flinch from speaking the truth in love.

Don’t get caught up in the emotion of either telling the truth or receiving the truth. Remember, there’s a reason why God told Jeremiah “don’t be afraid of their faces…I am with you.”

Ask God to “Show me Your way.” Lord, what is the wisest way to share Your truth?

There will be times when God shows you how to be meek and gentle in your delivery to the lost, and there will be times when God instructs you to “cry loud and spare not” to His people. Follow God.

Finally, get your own house in order, Team! Judgment is coming. Yield yourself to God, no longer servants of sin, and become tools of righteousness (Romans 6:13).

Where’s Your Focus: The Eyes are the Windows to the Soul

focus

Normally, on Wednesdays, I choose a topic related to whatever I need help with, find 3-4 scriptures pertaining to it, and then make it my meditation for the day.

I set my alarm for every hour depending on what time I start. Mostly, I do it on the hour. For instance, when I am thinking heavily (worrying), I choose “trust” as my meditation, find 3-4 scriptures relating to trust, and on the hour, I read those scriptures and pray for God to teach me to trust Him more.

[Word of Wisdom: Don’t ask Him to do this until you are ready. Not almost ready, but ready-ready.]

Today, I decided to go a different route. I asked God, instead, “What would You have me meditate and pray on today, Lord?”

He said, “Focus.”

Word of the Day

So, I stuck my finger in the Bible and it opened to Exodus 24-25. Unlike the other times where God would confirm what He told me, I didn’t see the word focus anywhere. But, this verse caught my eye:

“Then Moses entered the cloud as he went on up the mountain.
And he stayed there forty days and forty nights.”
Exodus 24:18 (NIV)

Revelation: Moses was in the Presence of God, as the glory of the Lord had settled there. And for forty days and forty nights, his eyes were focused on God.

Furthermore, at the end of the forty days, he came down with the Commandments and his face was radiant (Exodus 34:29-30). The people around him were afraid to come near.

Team, we have a word today.

But first…

Beyond Your Curtains

We can look into a window and see what is housed behind it.  Windows are also a protection against the elements while simultaneously allowing light in. When the sun is particularly hot or bright, like in the southern states, sometimes we put a tint on the window to lessen the heat. When the nighttime comes, we close the blinds for the sake of privacy; darkness remains on the outside unless we choose to venture into it.

What the soul takes in, the soul takes on. What seeps through the window can illuminate or darken. If your eyes take it in, it becomes a part of you.

And, sometimes what we take in diminishes or destroys our focus.

What Does Our Playbook Say About Focus?

“Why are you down in the dumps, dear soul? Why are you crying the blues? Fix my eyes on God – soon I will be praising again. He puts a smile on my face. He’s my God.” (Psalm 42:5)

When our eyes are not focused on God, we forget to praise. We forget that troubles are temporary. We forget to smile and to rejoice in the Lord. Our troubles become part of our identity. A part of us becomes bitter, saddened, and averse to praise.

This does not in any way mean that we ignore what we’re facing. As the saying goes, “Denial is a river in Egypt.” The river keeps flowing whether you look directly at it or turn your back. But what it says is that you being down in the dumps and crying the blues takes away from your ability to focus on God in order to cross the river and get to the other side of it.

“God teach me lessons for living so I can STAY THE COURSE. Give me INSIGHT so I can do what You tell me – my whole life one long obedient response.” (Psalm 119:33-34)

Let’s think about the river again.

In order to stay the course, we must remain focused on God. The minute we look left or right, we begin to swim either left or right instead of straight ahead toward the goal.

Where your eyes go, you will follow. The more insight or inner vision from spiritual eyes we have the better we’ll see what God is trying to show and tell us. I know we hear with our ears, but insight is like seeing, hearing, and understanding all at once. It’s when a thing clicks and you have no reason to have understood it except through God’s revelation to you.

“I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With Him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” (Psalm 16:8)

When we swear a solemn oath, we place our right hand on the Bible. It means that we will stand in truth. When we say someone is our right hand, it means they are our go-to, our ace. If we go into a dangerous situation (like crossing a raging river) with Ace, we know that whatever happens they aren’t going to abandon us. It boosts our confidence and gives us the ability to focus on our task without worry.

Think about this. Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father. If He (The Way, The Truth, and The Life) can be the right hand to THE MOST HIGH GOD, He can surely be trusted to be yours! Besides, who can you trust more that someone who’d give His life for you?

Someone who’s already done so.

Now, back to Moses…

The Israelites were afraid to come near Moses because their eyes were not accustomed to the glory of the Lord. Their days had been spent in the darkness of their false gods. God’s people were used to average. They were used to everyone looking the same and sounding the same. They were used to being afraid of being who God called them to be.

The truth is, sometimes, we’re Moses. And sometimes, we have surely been the Israelites. Before Christ, right, Team? But let’s talk as if you were Moses (who was scared at first).

Moses had been in the presence of the Lord and came down with a gift from God to present to the Israelites. That’s why when you branch out and do the new thing that God has given you to do, you get criticized and attacked. THE LIGHT of the Lord SHINING THROUGH YOUR WINDOWS is beyond the worldly comprehension of the Israelites. They can’t even make eye contact with you because they’d be blinded. Or, they might be forced to see their own unwillingness to step into who God has called them to be.

In any case, we must shield our eyes from the influence of the world and those who prefer to do everything but focus on God.

So, What’s the Play Call?

It comes directly from Psalm 121:1-2:

“I lift my eyes to the hills, where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

Remember the power, strength, and guidance that God offers to those who keep their eyes on the hills – at the mountaintops where the glory of the Lord remained with Moses. If we, like Moses, focus on the Lord, He will send you out with a hope and a promise that is greater than any of your problems combined. And He will give you the ability to see the solution that He has purposed for you.

What you see depends on where you decide to focus.
