This Truth Should Scare Christians Way More Than a Trump Presidency

church leaders fall

Christians? Fear?

Ok, I hear you, saints.

Fear is not of God, and has no long-term place in the hearts of Christians.

You’re right.

Fear is a spirit, a cunning one at that. Fear waves have swept America in the wake of a future Trump Administration. Immigrants fear their family members will be separated and deported back to crime and poverty-filled countries. Muslims fear persecution and deportation for their religious beliefs. African-Americans fear white nationalism and supremacy will be normalized, and many Civil Rights achievements will be eradicated.

What about followers of Christ in the U.S.?

Has the epidemic of fear in America infected you? Have you engaged in election protests, as if your hope is built on earthly process versus Christ the solid rock?

I carry no harsh judgment as one who’s never been afraid before – because I have. However, I would like to remind Team Jesus of one, simple truth that, to some, will make the current fear in America look like a Sunday School picnic.

Ready?

God has no respect of His children. Christians in America are equal opportunity martyrs just like Christians persecuted all over the world.

I know. Deep breath.

Now, What Were We Thinking?

I’m sorry-not-sorry, but – many Christians in America are some of the weakest, softest soldiers in the Body of Christ. (Hand raised – ouch!)

Yep. I said it. How?

First, to be able to live in America, with all of its flaws and shortcomings, is a blessing. There are so many people who dream of living in America. Many Christians around the world would die for the opportunity to worship Jesus Christ freely and openly – and some have died trying! Just imagine living in 1 of the top 25 worst places to live as a Christian. Check out their laws. We take our freedom for granted on a daily basis.

Second, we are over-consumed by the “work” of the church that there’s little effective room to do our Father’s business. Sadly, many have made the next church conference, meeting, or leadership appointment their “life’s work”. And, because there’s intrinsic good that comes from it, we’ve stamped God’s signature on many of our projects in the “name of the Lord”. How much, Team, do we do in our own names and forge God’s stamp of approval?

Third, we want to be liked way too much. Our incessant need for acceptance by everyone often waters down the Word of God and His standards in exchange for smiles, handshakes, like buttons, hearts, applause, and offerings. How concerned are we that God “likes” the way we live and the decisions we make? If your life was a Facebook post, would God be compelled to click the like button?

Fourth, how many of us could make it as a lone survivor? You’ve invested consistent time and energy in your walk and relationship with God to where, if you had to walk alone – no Sunday services, no Wednesday night Bible Study, or small group meetings – you would be ok? If you were imprisoned for Christ, Bible confiscated like that of Pastors Peter and Michael from Sudan, would you have enough “word” hid in your heart to carry your faith through?

The days are coming when we’ll need to run with the horses? But how can we when the footmen, i.e. someone talked about us, have worn us out?!

Strength in the Lord’s Joy

So, how do we do better, Team?

Well, for starters, we’ve been infected by pride, idols, and stuff. Lord, forgive us. Disinfect your people from worldly, self-serving pursuits that make us complacent when it comes to Kingdom work. Create in us clean hearts that will obey your voice.

What time is it? It’s time we become more “soul beggars”, than “X” beggars.

What’s your X?

When’s the last time you told someone about Jesus? Ok. Now, when’s the last time you told someone about your new car, your raise at work, or how your “X” was a huge success?

We have a values problem in the Body of Christ – what should mean more to us, means less. I’m not saying that we shouldn’t tell of God’s benefits and blessings, but are we simply recycling testimonies among people who already believe? How do we reach the sin-sick soul who could care less that you prayed for a spouse, and God sent him/her?!

The Team will only get stronger as we bring the Lord joy.  We must seek to please God and make Him smile – far beyond pleasing ourselves.

So, What’s the Play Call?

Let’s get back to basic training. While it’s great to plan for an abundant life, and set goals for yourself, be sure to keep God’s work at the front – not the back – of your minds.

The work of soul-winning is not an afterthought, but it’s all God thought about seeing His Son on the cross. Be a contender for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Stand, Team, stand on Christ the solid rock.

Separation of Faith & Race In Elections: If I Were a White Evangelical

Time to Get Out And Vote!

Even the most faith-filled follower of Christ in America has felt it. This presidential election season has been exhausting, has pulled on every emotion, has required deep, prayerful thought and consideration.

I concur.

One of the most disappointing aspects of this election season, for me and others, has been the exposition of the hearts of the evangelical community. To be more specific, our white evangelical brothers and sisters – not all, but by and large.

“I used to watch him on TV, now I don’t have much respect for him anymore.”

These are real sentiments heard among many African-American Christians. Between families and friends, at the barbershop or hair salons, or talking in the parking lot at church – many African-American Christians are taken back by many beloved white preachers who are supporting Donald Trump for President.

For many African-Americans, Christian or not, the slogan “Make America Great Again” conjures feelings of “Make America White Again”. Let’s go back in time to when white was supreme and everyone else knew and stayed in their “place”. The overwhelming Trump support by white supremacy groups and the Alt Right does very little to quell the feelings of angst in my community. It all but confirms them.

But, let’s be clear. There is neither Jew nor Greek, black nor white in the Kingdom of God. God is Lord over all, and our souls are not categorized by race.

However, the America we live in is far from the equality utopia of God’s Kingdom. And, while African-American Christians could choose to ignore racial issues with a “this world is not my home” mindset, I believe Jesus supports our pursuit of an abundant life with the peace and equality that comes with it.

The Burning Election Issue of White Christians

In this Presidential election season, white evangelicals, predominantly led by Franklin Graham, hold fast to their 2 to 3-issue voting stance: abortion, Supreme Court nominations, and religious freedom.

I’ve written before about the reasons why evangelicals support Trump. In this Election Eve, here are some final thoughts on the issue of abortion – the evangelical trump card.

Abortion

Just as our souls don’t have a race, our souls don’t have an age.  Evangelicals’ super-emphasis on abortion implies that God is more grieved at the atrocity (and it is) of abortion than other “flavors” of murder. With the thought that “infant lives matter more”, one would have to question: at what age is my life of lesser value compared to an infant, if I am murdered?

Like all sin, murder starts in the heart, and only God can see it and clean it out – not a vote. It kind of boils down to a pseudo-protection: If I vote for Trump, I’m saving the babies. Sure, it makes for good sleep at night, and bragging points to fellow evangelicals, but too bad God can’t be wooed with a pro-life vote. Sorry, you’re not doing God a favor; He never asked for our help when it comes to sin.

If evangelicals want to be Murder Police and swing scriptural batons, how many times did they arrest Trump?   There’s a reason why those who hate are also judged as murderers. Hate in our hearts makes us no better than an abortionist. Ouch.

So, I ask you, white evangelicals brothers and sisters…

Where are the national prayer rallies and revival tents to redeem white nationalists who hate minority groups? Where are the commercials and social media campaigns for criminal justice reform? Where’s the “cry loud, spare not” for the epidemic of African-American murders at the hands of police?

I understand.  Using abortion to push for a preferred candidate is effective. No one with common decency can stomach the thought of babies being killed. But, to strategically use abortion during election seasons, while deaf and mute during other instances of murder, can be viewed as self-serving, un-empathetic, and hypocritical.

Is There Separation of Faith and Race?

Perhaps I can take a step back and offer empathy to white evangelicals by answering relevant questions to the African-American experience:

If I were a white evangelical, would I care as much about police power or stop and frisk? Would I cringe when I hear someone who wants to be POTUS say, “my African-American over there”?

If I were a white evangelical, would I be outraged about housing and employment discrimination against African-Americans by Trump – or just say “that’s not fair/right”.

If I were a white evangelical, would I take offense that the “plan and contract with Black America” is typically presented in front of a crowd of people who looked like me – white? Or, would I take offense at Trump’s non-condemning position of a black protester being “roughed up”?

If I were a white evangelical, would I agree with Trump that, yeah, “Blacks are living in hell.”

If I were a white evangelical, would I have the sensitivity to feel that discrimination against any racial or religious group is potential discrimination against all?

If I were a white evangelical, could I stand with Trump because he promised to overturn Roe v. Wade, appoint conservative judges to the Supreme Court, and protect religious freedom – knowing his flip-flop position on abortion, and his track record of dishonoring his contracts with businesses and not paying?

If I were a white evangelical, would 2-3 election issues be enough for me to vote for Trump?

Uncomfortable Truth

The separation of faith and race is not between blacks and whites, but within the individual. I’ve tried to put my feet in a white evangelical’s shoes and walk an inch. The problem is – my heart and soul is uncomfortable being choked by the laces of the above ideals. And some of the issues are simply steeped in common sense versus race, in my opinion.

Where I can honestly say that, yes, growing up as white and Christian in America would’ve shaped my perspective in society, I think associating my vote to Trump for POTUS would have caused me anguish – if only for knowing the potential impact on my minority friends at church, work, etc. There go my AA-lenses again.

This may explain why many African-Americans see a good number of white evangelical leaders a little differently now. Many African-Americans feel the same preached Word on Sunday should’ve broadened the understanding of this presidential race beyond just a few issues.

In our reality, there is too much at stake for African-Americans to simply “look to the candidate who voices biblical principles.” Many have seen the abundance of Trump’s heart speak loud and clear.  Evangelical election issues aren’t broad enough for many Christians of color to simply “vote the Bible”.

If you’re like me, even as a Christian, you believe there’s more at stake than making this temporary home more Christian-comfortable – especially when the Word of the Lord has already told us perilous times are coming and those who live godly will be persecuted.

For now, America is far from seeing our faith first, and not seeing our race at all.

So, What’s the Play Call?

Vote on November 8th. Pray for post-election healing in America.

Dear Evangelicals: You are Not the Guardians of God’s Grace, but Fellow Partakers

evangelicals

Hypocrisy in Patriotism’s Clothing

The recent lewd and embarrassing developments in the Trump campaign have sent many evangelicals scurrying like roaches when the light flicks on:

Do we stick by our guy Trump?
Do we distance ourselves from his bigoted, racial, and sexual assault comments?
Do we say that we object to the disrespect of women, but champion his right to be forgiven?

Many evangelical responses have landed somewhere between:

I forgave him.
I support his concerns, not his values.
We’re voting for President of the United States, not a Pastor or Sunday School teacher.

What strikes at the heart of many evangelical responses is the remarkable benevolence of grace and forgiveness.

Well, isn’t that what Jesus is all about?

Sure, in a very special and specific context: For God so loved the world, not just the GOP’s world.

Donald Trump’s Grace vs. Bill Clinton’s Damnation

Let’s start off with good news. God gifted the human race with His grace, without respect of race, gender, political affiliations, or our favorite people.

Here’s why that’s so important: There is no man-made vetting process to access the forgiveness of God.  God has not placed the keys to His grace in any human’s filthy hands. There is no one to kiss-up to, no one to give money or favors to, no one to please or displease.

And the main people to declare and display this truth to the world should be the Ambassadors of Jesus Christ!

And conservative evangelicals are doing a good job of it – for Donald Trump, that is.

The will of God to show forgiveness to others, be gentle and kind to one another is in high gear when it comes to Trump.

Where was this level of graciousness for Bill Clinton in the 1990’s, or even today?

Though Donald Trump, Bill Clinton, me, and you have all fallen short of God’s will – when will “evangelicals” have a fair and balanced voice for all, regardless of political parties?

Double Standards Are For Double-Minded People

While Bill Clinton’s indiscretions in the 1990’s were out of order and disgraceful, can anyone help me remember such a gracious and forgiving evangelical community for him – then or now?

Where are the displays and words of grace, like:

He is a decent, wonderful man… Let him know you feel his pain.” – Newt Gingrich referring to Henry Hyde, Judiciary Committee Chairman presiding over Clinton’s impeachment, after news of Hyde’s own marital affair.

If we were perfect, we wouldn’t need Jesus.” – Mike Pence during a recent Liberty University convocation.

But, you know, the Bible tells me that we are all sinners saved by grace and I don’t think there’s probably a person alive that I know of that hasn’t made some mistakes in the past.” – Steve Scheffler, head of the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition.

{Clap, clap}

Bravo, Christian leaders?

Repentance is Appropriate for Hypocrisy

Perhaps some Christian leaders have confused political goodwill, e.g. supporting a candidate who now claims to be anti-abortion or a protector of religious freedoms, with Kingdom goodwill – displaying the love, grace, and forgiveness of Jesus Christ no matter the person or political party.

Or, perhaps some Christian leaders are so caught up in preparation for media interviews and talking points, they’ve forgotten that God elevated them to make Jesus famous – not serve as Bill Clinton’s accusers day and night.

One of the saddest verses in the Bible is Matthew 7:21-23 (MSG):

Knowing the correct password—saying ‘Master, Master,’ for instance—isn’t going to get you anywhere with Me. What is required is serious obedience—doing what my Father wills. I can see it now—at the Final Judgment thousands strutting up to me and saying, ‘Master, we preached the Message, we bashed the demons, our God-sponsored projects had everyone talking.’ And do you know what I am going to say? ‘You missed the boat. All you did was use me to make yourselves important. You don’t impress me one bit. You’re out of here.’’

Will this passage apply to you, evangelical leaders?

You’re seemingly busy doing so much “work for the Lord”, that you’ve left Jesus’ work on the cross on the back burner – or worse yet – you’ve applied the redemptive work of Christ only to those you like or respect.

Now that the shoe is on the other foot and your candidate has displayed a plethora of qualities that are anti-Jesus’ character, why not go back?!

Apologize to Bill Clinton and any others you repeatedly attacked, defamed, or treated as unworthy of God’s grace – all the while coddling your friends, donors, and political allies for the same or worse behavior.

King David could put Bill Clinton and Donald Trump to shame with personal failures; the difference is when David asked for forgiveness, that was the beginning – not the end – of his repentance journey. Repentance is not about lip service or repeating words that someone gives you. A parrot could do that.

Take honest inventory of the many “turned cheeks” given to Donald Trump, and how, to this very day – kind, forgiving words for Bill or Hillary Clinton get stuck in your throat.

Release God’s grace from your perceived duty as assignee. The world is watching all who claim to be followers of Christ – that’s the “show” to be concerned about.

The blood of Jesus and the anointing not only requires but compels us to be different. Let the world know that they can escape the widespread hypocrisy and double-standards of this world when they join Team Jesus.

So, What’s the Play Call?

If you consider yourself an evangelical or a follower of Jesus Christ, and you’re able to shun hypocrisy disguised as American patriotism – we applaud you. Continue to pray for teammates who are challenged in this area.

But, if you read the Playbook, if you look at the Bible as a mirror, and you see smudges of hypocrisy or hate that causes you to mentally ration the grace of God to some, but lavishly lather it all over others – ask God to create a clean heart in you.

Remember, God’s grace, mercy, and forgiveness are available to everyone – the lost and the seasoned Christian. Yes, ask for forgiveness in your own lives, but keep going until you turn away and change for God’s good.
