Get in Formation: Be Led by the Spirit, Not Your Emotions

christian singles

My Page in the Book of Christian Singles

I have a little story to tell you.  I don’t gossip about others, so you can take this as a lesson for the books.  I believe everyone’s story can help someone gain life lessons without the hardships.  The lessons I’ve learned as a divorcee after 10 years of marriage?  Let’s just say…I could write a book.

I’m grateful to be a better person today after choosing to be led by the Spirit and not my emotions when it comes to relationships.

Why should we jump into the fire when we already know we’re going to get burned?  Life is a marathon, not a sprint.  So why do we rush our lives, making hasty decisions we may regret?  Likewise, why do we as women think we need someone to complete us?

Reasons for Singleness

I have a girlfriend who’s known by our group of girlfriends as the one who never has trouble meeting guys.  She’s the one who always has ‘somebody’.  My friend is a sweet, good-looking woman who’s very confident, has a successful career, comes from a God-fearing family, and enjoys living life.

Our group is mixed with single, married, and divorced women. So, when we get together, we’re always sharing our relationship experiences to help each other ‘learn the lessons’ and prepare to settle down with Mr. Right.

Sound familiar?

So, why is my girlfriend still single?

It’s often believed that many single women are still single because 1) they’re waiting for Prince Charming to sweep them off their feet, or 2) they have a list of wants and expectations that are unrealistic for one man.

Sometimes, this list is so long that no man can ever satisfy everything we want or need.  When my girlfriend meets a handsome man, she expects him to:

  1. Treat her with respect.
  2. Communicate regularly.
  3. Spend quality time with her.
  4. Be honest and sincere.

Now, these are all great expectations, but I wonder if she expects the same from herself.  Let’s be fair here, right?

Our Formation vs. God’s Formation

If my girlfriend can wait for Mr. Right while focusing on what she brings to the table, instead of her perfect list, maybe he will show up in perfect time when she least expects it.  She should trust that God knows everything she needs, including what’s best for her.

You see, each and every guy was just a distraction to keep her from focusing on God.  She’d hear that still small voice in her ear, but wrestled with it daily and could not get in formation.

Why?

She was too entangled in her emotions and couldn’t see past fulfilling the lust of her flesh.  She thought he actually cared for her and loved her.  The heartbreak is experienced yet again, and this is when we, her close friends, have to say: “Tell him, ‘Boy Bye’”, like Beyonce.  I love that!

Now, you may be wondering – how do I know all of this resonated with my friend?

Easy. Because that friend was ME!

Another lesson learned.

I was reminded that I needed to trust in the Lord with all of my heart and do not lean to my own understanding.  In all of my ways, acknowledge Him, and He will direct my path.

I knew this, but I wasn’t walking in it and letting God lead me completely in everything, including a relationship.

Why Get in Formation, Ladies?

There’s power in formation.

You already know this, and now it’s time to be led by God from the bottom of your heart.  You don’t have to try to figure out everything on your own.  Listen to and follow God’s voice in everything you do, and everywhere you go.  He’s the one who will keep you on track and lead that special someone to you.

So let patience have her perfect work, that you may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.  Perfect – meaning whole and complete within yourself, being led by the Spirit and not your emotions.  Then, you will be confident and know that no one can complete you, they can only complement who God has created you to be.

God has you.

And God has me…so I will just wait!

So, what’s the play call?

  • Put God first!
  • Get in formation AND get information.
  • Stay in formation.
  • Lose the EGO.
  • Guard your heart.
  • Embrace patience.

To Team Trump: Team Jesus Will Never Bow to President Trump (or Clinton)

election 2016
Photo PBS.org

America is coming down to the wire of electing its next President. This presidential election season has been one of the most contentious and controversial in American history. With the first presidential debate now days away, PBS Frontline will air its documentary, The Choice 2016, a highly anticipated dual biography of Trump and Clinton from veteran filmmaker Michael Kirk.

In its coverage of Donald Trump, the documentary alludes to the motivation behind Trump’s candidacy for President of the United States – his humiliation and mockery by President Obama at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in April 2011.

Is it Payback Time?

Surrogates on Team Trump agree – that night of public shame and embarrassment fueled revenge. And, the response?  When someone hits you, hit them harder.

Michael D’Antonio, author of The Truth About Trump, tells FRONTLINE, “Donald dreads humiliation and he dreads shame, and this is why he often attempts to humiliate and shame other people… This is a burning, personal need that he has to redeem himself from being humiliated by the first black president.”

Comments from Trump’s Director of African-American Outreach, Minister Omarosa Manigault, strike a chord:

“Every critic, every detractor, will have to bow down to President Trump… It’s everyone who’s ever doubted Donald, whoever disagreed, whoever challenged him — it is the ultimate revenge to become the most powerful man in the universe.”

Reserve Your Bow for Jesus

Team, we understand how, for many, this presidential election represents a choice for the “lesser of 2 evils”. Many citizens are still on the fence for both Trump and Clinton.

We still encourage you to watch (stay informed), pray (seek God’s guidance with your vote), and vote (exercise your right and privilege) – for the greater good in this election versus the lesser evil.

But, regardless of the election outcome, we must stand boldly and unapologetically for Jesus Christ, even when our leaders do not.

From Obama to Clinton or Trump, we must take on the position of Daniel – we will not bow, agree, or approve of principles or laws that stand in opposition to God and the Bible.  With due respect and honor to the office, we will speak truth to power in love – just as the prophet Nathan did when he confronted King David about his sinful actions.

So, what’s the play call?

Reserve your submission to God, and only for God.

We’ve written about this before; unfortunately, persecution of the church and Christian values will get worse before it gets better. So, now is not the time to “go soft” or skate the line on what you believe.

As followers of Christ, stay on “HOT” for God – there is no room for the lukewarm, and never let your love for God grow cold.

3 Ways to Stop Being a Successful Wreck

successful

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the Dream Conference at Redemption World Outreach Church. The conference speakers included Pastor Hope Carpenter, Apostle Ron Carpenter, Dr. Cindy TrimmDr. Marilyn Hickey, Pastor Kim Lyons, and Pastor Jacqueline Tirado.

Sunday morning, the guest of honor was Dr. Marilyn Hickey, a “General in the Faith” as they call her. Now, I usually appreciate people stepping on my toes. After all, I’m a Christian development & lifestyle coach. In case you’re not familiar, coaching is all about taking revelation information about yourself and using it to create amazing results in your life.

I’m more than willing to sit through some toe-crunching truth as long as it’ll make me better. And, so, in usual fashion, I burst through the church doors like, “Lay it on me, General Hickey!”

The Truth Must Be Told

But on Sunday, Dr. Hickey’s words stung more than usual.

She said (and I paraphrase):

I was praying for people, seeing people get healed, and I’d walk in the door excited to tell my husband, to which he would reply, ‘That’s great, Marilyn, but there’s no food in the fridge and no clean laundry. Remain balanced.’”

Gulp.

Even though she didn’t belabor the point, her toe-stepping words felt more like a toe-stabbing. I sat there feeling sorry for myself and a bit like a loser. I failed to mention in my previous article that I was actually worse than Martha because all my busyness took place outside the home.

Not only did Dr. Hickey stab my toe, she stabbed the stubbed one. In all my efforts to be amazing, many days I felt like I was drowning at home. My household chores always seem to carry over to tomorrow’s to-do list. If the laundry was washed and folded, it wasn’t put away (toe-stub). If I was patient during homework, dinner and bath time, I was too tired for bedtime stories (toe-stub). If I spent time making a healthy and delicious meal, I was too exhausted to clean up the kitchen afterward (uhh toe-stub).

Treat ‘Home’ as Your First Ministry (1 Tim. 3).

dishesSo, when Dr. Hickey reminded me that my home is my first ministry, it hurt but it was exactly what I needed to hear.

She didn’t know this, but I was exhausted and embarrassed from desperately stuffing things into corners or reciting the tired “Please excuse my house,” spiel whenever someone stopped by.

I was also done with the guilt that crept up my neck as I sped through school zones on the way to school (Lord, forgive me) or every time my daughter asked, “Are we late, again?”

I knew the Bible said that we should do everything as if we were doing it for God, but the truth was, I wasn’t thinking about God after dinner. I was thinking about peace, quiet, a few recordings of Judge Judy and a hot bubble bath!

I’m not bashing personal time because we cannot serve others from an empty cup, but what I am alluding to is balance.

Are you making time to do what’s important? Do you have a lot of idle time? Are you properly preparing for tomorrow?

Do everything for God (Col. 3:23-25, MSG).

woman achieveJust as I display God in my writing, speaking, and coaching, in the same way, my marriage, parenting, organization, cleanliness, and timeliness also depicts the face of God. I can’t be so busy in my efforts to save the world that I neglect loving the people God has appointed me to care for.

Now, occasionally, my husband’s going to open the door to a pot boiling over, kids with messy faces, and my hair looking like I stuck my finger in an electrical socket. It is what it is. But, why shouldn’t I do everything I can to ensure that when he pulls into the driveway, relieved to be home, he walks into a door where dinner is prepared, homework is done, and his 3 favorite girls are eager to love on him? We should all release a sigh of relief when we come home, not one of exasperation.

Similarly, I want my daughters to see Jesus in the home I make for them. Rushing all the time, clean clothes that live in the dryer, unable to find anything ever!!, and a Mom too tired for playtime and snuggles is not the childhood I want them to have. And, I definitely don’t want my grandchildren or great-grandchildren wondering why they’re never prepared, on-time, or can’t seem to live a life of order. Sins are generational, you know.

Look like Jesus (1 John 2:6, MSG).

Does this all sound a bit too unrealistic to you? Do you feel the urge to say, “Don’t be so hard on yourself. It’s okay (and definitely not a sin) to leave the dishes dirty every now and again.”

I agree with you. There are times when housework shouldn’t be the priority and lil’ Susie will be okay without a bedtime story every night. But, when every now and again becomes habitual because we are unbalanced, that’s not okay.

Remember, Jesus is our standard. And, Dr. Hickey reminded me that Jesus was balanced. In the four gospels, He is portrayed as a King (Matthew), a servant (Mark), the Son of God (Luke), and the Son of man (John). He knows how to lead and how to work. Jesus is spiritual and He is relational. He’s not too far right or too far left.

Chances are, if your house is a wreck, you can’t ever find anything, and you’re always late…your mind is a wreck, you’re not cracking open your Bible daily, and you’re always late to church. As much as we try to keep our earthly lives and our relationship with God separate, everything is connected.

So, What’s the play call?

In the words of Dottie Peoples, “Get your house in order” – your physical house and your spiritual house. When Jesus comes back, He’s going to look at what we did with what He gave us.

Did we take good care of it? Did we manage it well? Did we use those things to bring Him glory?

Let us know in the comments which area(s) you’re struggling in so that we can pray for wisdom, balance, and for God to show you what His priorities are for your life.

Do You Treat Your Bible Like an iPhone Manual?

iphone

In its usual style and flair, Apple, Inc. recently announced its newest addition to the iPhone family.  Thousands gathered in San Francisco, and millions more tuned in online as the technology giant unveiled the highly-anticipated iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus!

As I began to think about the new iPhone and all of its bells and whistles – waterproof, headphone jack eliminated, a new dual lens camera – I took a look at my own phone.  As I browsed Apple’s website, I mentally compared the new iPhone to my device. Pouring over the lineup of cool, new iPhone features, I got stuck:

  • Is my phone water resistant?
  • Does my camera have optical image stabilization?
  • Is my battery performing at its optimal level?

The truth is, though I’ve had my phone for 2 years, I had no idea about all the cool things it could do.

Know why?

Keep Your Manual in a Safe Place – Your Heart

I had never read the manual.

In fact, when I checked, the manual was still in the box the phone came in – all neatly sealed and tucked away. It was never opened.

I mean, who has the time to sit down and read the manual?

Though I would not consider myself a tech expert, I’d like to think that I’m intelligent enough to figure out how to operate a cell phone.  I mean, I do know the basics. Aside from the occasional phone call, I can check my email and send texts!  That should count for something, right?

My husband, on the other hand, is who I call a true gadget-guy.  He’s well versed in the latest smartphone technology and features.  I like to rely on him to be my in-house “tech support”.  Whenever I have a question about my phone, I just ask him. Don’t judge me! This system works for me.

But, then it occurred to me: How many extras are we missing out on in our relationship with God?

The Bible says in Psalm 68:19 that the Lord loads us with daily benefits.

Wait, what exactly are these benefits?

Do you know? Have you taken some time out to read the manual?

We don’t know how good we have it because we are trying to figure out everything on our own. Like me with my phone, we attempt to piece together answers in our own wisdom. We think that if we somehow stumble upon the right button, the answer will magically appear.

Can I Borrow Your Manual?

bible

When that doesn’t work for us, we turn to people.

We ask our friends and closest advisors for their thoughts. We depend on our Pastors for a “Word from the Lord”.  We overlook the authority we have in Christ. We miss the power He has given us over the enemy.  We forfeit the promise of our inheritance simply because we haven’t read the book.

But Wait! There’s More… to Learn!

While I don’t fully understand all of the ins-and-outs of technology, I did recognize something else as I explored Apple’s website.

The new iPhone is pre-loaded with multiple apps.Once the power is turned on, everything that the phone needs to operate at maximum capacity is already inside. No other intervention is needed. Even the new AirPods are wireless!  Apple built in the coding to ensure that all of the programs and applications work together for a seamless user experience.

In the same way, God has built into our being everything we need for success in this life.  God has pre-packaged us with HIS purpose. Your Maker has already put multiple gifts, talents, and abilities inside of you!  Nothing else is needed!  What an amazing thought.

Once we turn on the power of the Holy Spirit inside of us, amazing things will happen.

But the question is: HOW do we become all that God has planned for us to be?

How exactly do we reach our fullest potential?

So, what’s the play call?

If your Bible is neatly tucked away, only to be used on Sunday mornings, may I gently encourage you to pick it up today?  Take some time early in the morning to start your day with God.  By quieting yourself in his presence, His Word will open your eyes to your potential and reveal His amazing plans for your life.

In this walk with Christ, what features & benefits have you discovered for your life?

Teammate Spotlight: Meet Stacey H.!

team Jesus

Teammate: Stacey H.
Nominated by: Kaitlyn H.

team jesus magazineNomination:

I would like to nominate my mother.  She is always doing things for others, always putting herself aside for the kingdom.  Every day she rights devotionals for the church, which helps people including many teens on Instagram.  I asked why she did this and she said there was so much wrong information and negativity on the Internet that she wanted Jesus’ name to come up under any topic.

My 14-year-old brother had open heart surgery this year, and every day she still did them while sitting in the hospital with him.  She drops things off on people’s doorsteps who need encouragement and they never know where it came from.  Every year for her birthday, she makes almost 100 handmade items such a candles, bath soaps, etc. and she hands them out to random people.  Love her heart!!!

How Does Stacey Run The Play?

Romans 12:7-9 (ERV):

Whoever has the gift of serving should serve. Whoever has the gift of teaching should teach. Whoever has the gift of comforting others should do that. Whoever has the gift of giving to help others should give generously. Whoever has the gift of leading should work hard at it. Whoever has the gift of showing kindness to others should do it gladly.

Great job, Teammate! God bless you!

Now, how can you be inspired to follow Stacey’s lead?

The World’s Most Amazing Love Letter

love letter

I’ve been chatting with you ladies every other Wednesday for a few months now, and I’ve attempted to be transparent. But, it’s time I come out the closet.

I can be a “Martha”.

You know, working, working, working and missing out on some of the moments I’m actually working for.

You, too? Come give me a hug, girl – we’re in this together!

Like you, I have good reasons for working so hard. I’m raising Godly girls, building a legacy, maintaining a home, nourishing a marriage, and so desperately trying not to skimp on my self-care and physical fitness. Not to mention quality time with friends and family, maintaining business relationships, and being available when the Holy Spirit nudges me to go, do, and be the hands and feet of God.

It’s a worthy list, but that doesn’t make it any less tiring. It certainly doesn’t make it more important than spending time at Jesus’ feet.

As you can see, I can take all the help I can get. So, when I read God’s love letter for me this morning, and it was perfect for a talk I’m giving next week, I practically had a sanctified seizure on my couch.

Yes, I am dramatic, and no, I’m not exaggerating. I kicked and squirmed like I had just been given a million dollars. I was in awe of God and how much He loves me.

Is God Winking at You?

I call these God winks.

Allow me to explain.

One day, I was rushing around (as usual – didn’t I say I was a Martha?), and though I had set aside enough time to prepare my food, I didn’t have enough time to sit and eat it. So, I put my plate in the microwave (where I often store food I plan to come back for), and hurried down the hall to get dressed. When I got into the car, guess what was sitting in my cup holders: an aluminum foil wrapped burrito and a thermos of ice cold sweet tea. I looked up at the door and my husband wasn’t there, but if he was, my eyes would have said, “Thank you!” And, his eye would have winked, “I got you.”

That’s what God did to me this morning. I opened up The Daily Message by Eugene H. Peterson, turned to today’s date, and there it was as clear as day: the Bible story that explained what I prepared to say. It was as if God had penned and hand-delivered it just to help me.

The Bible: God’s Personal Love Letters

Can I tell you a little secret?

I’ll bet you have a book of God’s hand-written love letters to you, too. It might be a little dusty, but it’s there.

It’s your Bible.

Maybe you’ve come to dread reading the Bible because it’s a bunch of names, dates, and weird stories. There was a time I felt that way, too!  These simple tips helped me:

  1. Explore different versions.

If you use Bible Gateway to look up scriptures, they have a parallel tool where you can see the verse in a different version. I am partial to the Easy to Read Version (ERV) and The Message (MSG).

  1. Find a preacher that shares the Word in an exciting way.

I love when preachers and teachers are passionate about their subject matter. When a story really resonates with a person, they share it with such compulsion and excitement. My pastor makes the story come alive. It doesn’t sound like an outdated, irrelevant Bible story. It sounds like some of the things you and I are still doing today. This helps me to remember the Word long after the sermon is over, which consequently helps me to apply it.

  1. Pray before you read.

The Devil doesn’t want you to read the Bible, commit it to memory, and use it to enhance your life. If you find yourself always getting sleepy, unable to remember what you just read, or not applying it to your life to create lasting change – ask God to help you.

  1. Expect a solution.

When your phone starts acting up and you go get the manual, you flip through it with expectancy. You are expecting to find the answer to the problem you have. Replace phone with life and manual with Bible. You get, “When your life starts acting up and you go get your Bible, you flip through it with expectancy.” When you read the Bible, you should expect God to speak to you. Don’t read it just to say you did it. Read it because you fully anticipate that there is a tip, a prayer, a story that is the solution to your problem.

So, what’s the play call?

In our efforts to sow and water, sow and water, sow and water, let’s schedule in some time first thing in the morning to read God’s love letters to us. His letter has answers for our lives and for the lives of others.

Nominate a Team Jesus Teammate!

team Jesus

Hey there, Team!

Do you know someone on Team Jesus who deserves a little recognition? They get it. They live it. They’re executing the plays that Coach Jesus calls – e.g. love others, serve others, be cheerful givers, be faithful in your positions, and serve with gladness.

Got a teammate in mind?

We want to hear about them and feature them in a Teammate Spotlight!

God Does Not Play Favorites, Neither Do We!

Some of the BEST players on Team Jesus don’t have a huge following or a major platform. They’re everyday people who love Jesus Christ (for real) and show their love not only in words – but in their actions.

While we all can appreciate and honor the “generals” on Team Jesus, it’s those “boots on the ground”, faithful Teammates working in the trenches without the spotlight or fanfare who also deserve our honor and thanks.

Think about the elderly lady who prays and raises everyone’s children on the block. Who will honor the man who cheerfully cleans the church bathrooms in excellence? What about that friend who always sends you little notes of encouragement right when you need them?

God sees and honors all teammates who faithfully and obediently live to glorify Him. And Team Jesus Magazine wants to do the same!

Love Beyond Walls & MAP16: The 648-Mile March for the Poor

    love beyond walls

Teammates Terence and Cecilia Lester wear their hearts on their sleeves; wherever their sleeves go, their love for the poor goes.

So, where can you find this community service-minded couple, who has spearheaded hundreds of creative service projects for the homeless and those less fortunate?

Don’t look behind a corporate desk in a tall skyscraper, or seated within rows of church pews. Try beyond the walls.

In 2013, the Lesters officially launched Love Beyond Walls, an Atlanta-based 501(c)3 non-profit that raises awareness of societal needs through technology and storytelling, and mobilizes people to take part in it.  The purposed growth of Love Beyond Walls, and its service to over 14,000 people is nothing short of God’s grace and love at work.

The smallest donation of a razor, shoes, a meal, or even a place to wash clothes is monumental to those served by Love Beyond Walls. However, these teammates are well-acquainted with going the extra mile in personal sacrifice for the poor and forgotten.

In the cold of December 2014, the world took note as Terence lived as a homeless man on top of a bus for 30-nights straight. The “Get On The Bus” campaign increased awareness for homelessness, and the need to restore hope and dignity to those in under-resourced communities. Now, the Love Beyond Walls Mobile Makeover Bus provides free hair cuts, clothing, and makeovers to those in need.

But, the personal sacrifice doesn’t stop there. Now, in 2016…

The March for Poverty Awareness and the Future Love Center

On August 20, 2016, Terence began the journey of a lifetime – one that would challenge him to his core.

Starting at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) building in Atlanta, Georgia, Terence set out on a March Against Poverty (MAP16), a 648-mile march to the White House in Washington, D.C.  The overall goal is to end homelessness and raise awareness for the millions of people living in poverty in America.

Now, approximately 12 days in and having reached South Carolina, Terence and the Love Beyond Walls team document the journey on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter – the faces and stories of those impoverished, and many gracious supporters he meets along the way.

    love beyond walls

All efforts lead to the ultimate building of the Love Center.  This 2,000+ square foot, “all-in-one” facility will holistically serve and restore the poor.  Under one roof, those living in poverty can not only find a place to sleep, eat, find or wash clothes, but also be groomed, find employment, receive counseling, and worship.

With major support from the SCLC, Nissan South, churches, and other non-profits, this journey for Terence and Love Beyond Walls will continue to give a voice to those in poverty until they are heard.

What Can I Do to Support MAP16?

    We’re glad you asked!

Love Beyond Walls understands that everyone can’t walk to Washington, D.C. However, everyone can do at least 1 of these 6 easy ways to partner with MAP16.

Visit the Love Center’s GoFundme page for more information on how you can make a small donation with huge impact!

Will you share a prayer in the comments section for MAP16 and Love Beyond Walls? Please keep Terence, Cecilia, and their entire team covered in prayer. Through their many programs and services, serving God by serving the poor will bring glory to the Kingdom of God.

    So, what’s the play call?

Following the example of teammates Terence and Cecilia, what passion for service has God placed in your heart?  Are you afraid to leap? Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner: The Apostle Paul – Part 2

    apostle paul

    Hey Team!

In Part 1, my (make-believe) dinner with my Fab Five: Oprah, MJ, Tracee, Michelle, and Paul was unbelievable. Who did you dine with?

As we see in the New Testament, Paul is quite the talker! So, after dinner, we went to Baskin Robbins for some dessert. Here’s what else he had to say:

    6. Just because something is technically legal doesn’t mean that it’s spiritually appropriate. If I went around doing whatever I thought I could get by with, I’d be a slave to my whims. (1 Cor. 6:12, MSG)

I remember going to friends’ houses for sleepovers and having to govern myself according to how I was raised. Some of my friends were allowed to do things that I was not allowed to do. Sometimes, I’d politely decline activities and behaviors that were not allowed in my home and other times I’d enjoy temporarily “breaking the rules”. But, just because I knowingly broke the rules doesn’t mean I had fooled myself into thinking the rules had changed at my house. And, if I did, my grandmother would quickly remind me that I had “better wake up.”

This sleepover we’re at (here on Earth) can last over 100 years. And, while we’re away from our Heavenly Father, it’s easy to forget the morals and values of our home if we don’t make studying them a priority. Even though it’s fun to sometimes break the rules, we must remember that when we return home, we have to answer for our actions.

Have you begun living in a way that is legally acceptable, but spiritually inappropriate?

    7. Don’t you see that you can’t live however you please, squandering what God paid such a high price for? Let people see God in and through your body. No one will get by with vandalizing God’s temple. And you, remember, are the temple. (1 Cor. 3:16-17, MSG)

Man oh man is this so spot on for me, as I’ve struggled with poor eating habits since the womb. Or at least it feels that way. When we don’t take proper care of our bodies, it’s akin to scribbling graffiti on the walls and bridges of Heaven. Would you do that?

How are you treating your body in a way that you wouldn’t treat Heaven?

    8. There is no time to waste, so don’t complicate your lives unnecessarily. Develop a way of life in which you can spend plenty of time together with the Master without a lot of distractions. (1 Cor. 7:29-31, MSG)

Doesn’t this answer so many questions! As an overwhelmed mom, wife & entrepreneur, I’m just like, “God, HOW?!” But, as I begin to start every day with a morning staff meeting (my staff consists of 2 people—me and God), I realize that half of the things I thought were priority are, in fact, not. And, most of the things I never get around to (like quiet time with God, reaching out to a friend who is struggling, and reminding my life group to pray for the requests made earlier in the week) are really the most essential tasks.

These are the things that will pass inspection when Jesus takes a look at what I built for Him while on the Earth (1 Cor. 3-5)

Will the things you put so much effort into matter when you stand before God or are you being distracted?

    9. Don’t be so naïve and self-confident. You’re not exempt. You could fall flat on your face as easily as anyone else. Forget about self-confidence; it’s useless. Cultivate God-confidence. (1 Cor. 10: 11-12, MSG)

Ding! Ding! Ding! A bell just went off in my spirit! My confidence wavers depending on the day or task at hand. But, my confidence in God is always an A plus. You want to grow your confidence? Believe that no matter which way you go, God is going to re-route you. Believe that wherever you fail, God will succeed. Have a chat with God first thing in the morning and ask Him to rule your day. Put your life in God’s hands and you can’t fail.

In what areas have you been relying on yourSELF instead of God?

    10. We want to live well, but our foremost efforts should be to help others live well. (1 Cor. 10:23-24, MSG)

There is an abundance of life coaches today. And, sometimes that frustrates me because I’m one of them. Let me clarify that. It frustrates me when I use self-confidence. But, it’s a very, very beautiful notion when I use my God-confidence. Why? Because when I compare myself to the greats, I wonder what on Earth I can possibly offer? Comparison is the thief of joy. But, when I wake up and say, “God, thank you for the calling to pour into others. Send the people you want me to reach my way. Lord, give me the words to say which will sow a seed deep into their hearts that You will grow into more than their minds could even fathom.” That’s me not relying on myself at all and totally putting God’s work into God’s hands. God-confidence.

Regardless of your occupation, there’s always an opportunity to help others. When we help others we are planting a seed in their garden and in our own that is guaranteed to come back in bigger ways than we could have imagined.

    So, what’s the play call?

If you aren’t offended by Paul getting up-close and personal, his words have the potential to change your life. Often we hold the keys to the chains that are holding us. Don’t allow ignorance and a nonchalant attitude to keep you in a cage any longer. Print these scriptures out and ruminate on one scripture per day. Don’t simply look at it, walk away and forget what you read. Think about how you can apply what you’ve read in order to enhance your life. Now, go do great things for the Kingdom!
