Bless the Lord: How Your Soul Glorifies God

blood of jesus

Today’s Scripture Lesson: Psalm 103

I’m going to depart from my typical format today. Instead of asking you to open your Bible today and read it, I’m going to present the full Psalm in two parts. While I will offer my own brief commentary on each part, I do encourage you to ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to see the truth in His word and allow Him to be your teacher and minister.

Psalm 103:1 – 5 (NASB)

Bless the LORD, O my soul,
And all that is within me, bless His holy name.

Bless the LORD, O my soul,
And forget none of His benefits;

Who pardons all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases;

Who redeems your life from the pit,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;

Who satisfies your years with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle.

guard your thoughts

Please re-read those 5 verses, but do so with this simple understanding: David is literally speaking in the 3rd person to his very soul, reminding his soul to speak truth regarding the Lord God.

Consider this. We all have an ongoing inner dialogue. So much of what we say is often a dialogue speaking about our situation, our condition, our faith, our relationships, our pain, our self-pity, our pride. I suppose you could easily add to this list. I know I certainly can.

Upon whom does your inner dialogue most often focus? How’s that working out for you?

Sorry to throw that last question in, but it was the question the Holy Spirit asked me and I thought maybe, for someone else who may be reading this, it might be relevant as well. Do you see the hopefulness in that which David is asking his own soul to set his focus? I’ll start you out…verse 3 says pardon and healing. What else do you see?

Let’s move on.

Psalm 103:6 – 22 (NASB)

The LORD performs righteous deeds
And judgments for all who are oppressed.

He made known His ways to Moses,
His acts to the sons of Israel.

The LORD is compassionate and gracious,
Slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness.

He will not always strive with us,
Nor will He keep His anger forever.

He has not dealt with us according to our sins,
Nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.

For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
So great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear Him.

As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He removed our transgressions from us.

Just as a father has compassion on his children,
So the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him.

For He Himself knows our frame;
He is mindful that we are but dust.

As for man, his days are like grass;
As a flower of the field, so he flourishes.

When the wind has passed over it, it is no more,
And its place acknowledges it no longer.

But the lovingkindness of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him,
And His righteousness to children’s children,

To those who keep His covenant
And remember His precepts to do them.

The LORD has established His throne in the heavens,
And His sovereignty rules over all.

Bless the LORD, you His angels,
Mighty in strength, who perform His word,
Obeying the voice of His word!

Bless the LORD, all you His hosts,
You who serve Him, doing His will.

Bless the LORD, all you works of His,
In all places of His dominion;
Bless the LORD, O my soul!

And so, David’s soul blesses the Lord. How?

He just begins focusing on and speaking truth about his Creator. He speaks beautiful truths revealing God’s righteousness, God’s justice, God’s mercy and compassion, God’s grace, God’s steadfast love, and that God’s anger goes away. Then in verses 10 – 12, we read this incredible revelation,

He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear Him. As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.”

Next, he reveals God as a “father.” Not only does he reveal God as a father, but regardless of the kind of earthly father any of us have had, he reveals God is a compassionate father  (v 13).

David goes on to reveal God knows our very frame. I take that two ways; God literally knows our skeletal structure, and God knows the framework of our lives and every experience which has brought us where we are in our lives at any given moment.

So, What’s the Play Call?

David reveals great wisdom in this Psalm, showing us the beauty in speaking the truth about God. We cannot speak truth about God without bringing Him glory.

I didn’t do all the work for you. Continue writing down all the revelations you see about God in the remainder of this Psalm. For more revelation, turn to the 104th Psalm. It is a continuation of the 103rd, even beginning with “Bless the Lord, O my soul.”

Prepare Yourself Now for What’s to Come Next

prepare yourself

Time Waits For No One

A typical phrase, right?  And, it’s very true.  November is here and we are on the heels of crossing over into 2019. Are you ready? Are you prepared?

Preparation is the one thing that qualifies you for what’s to come. It is defined as the action or process of making ready or being made ready for use or consideration.  Preparation is God’s idea of us showing Him that we are ready for His promises. It’s not always easy, but it is a major step and it’s necessary.

Consider this for a moment:  God says in Genesis 6 that He is going to flood the earth, and He gives Noah the key to surviving the flood which is to build an ark. The building of the ark is Noah’s preparation for the flood. This will sustain Noah and his family.

The question I’d like for you to consider is what if Noah ignored God’s instruction to build the ark?

The instruction given to Noah would not only protect him and his family from drowning in the flood, but this is the portal to keeping covenant with God.  Think about this for a moment. God wants to start something new on the earth and His desire is to do it with you!  What feelings do you think God would have toward Noah if he ignored His instruction, which would break their covenant?

The God Idea

prepare yourselfThe storyline of Noah and the ark is all about preparation for a God Idea.

Many of us have God Ideas, but we find ourselves frustrated because of the lack of preparation. To stick with the storyline, our frustration is an indication that we are drowning in the Idea because of our failure to prepare and build.

When a mother carries a child for 9 months, there is something that most mothers have which is called a baby shower.  This baby shower is the very thing that prepares the family, mother, and child for the God Idea of “be fruitful and multiply”.

Twenty-nineteen is going to be a year of birthing for many of us, but it will only happen to the prepared. Vision and purpose will not be birthed in this season to those who are not willing to build an ark.

So, what’s the play call?

It’s time to build, it’s time to work (John 9:4)!  Gather your ideas and start to look at them from the end to the beginning. Yep, I said it just like that because the only way to produce a God Idea is to look at it backward. See it complete in God and then prayerfully strategize on how you will bring it to fruition.

Preparation is the key. Let’s build an Ark!

Revenge for What? God Will Fight for You

revenge

When Offense Strikes, Revenge Draws Nigh

When a bad situation arises or someone does you wrong, typically the first thing we want to do is fight for ourselves. Most of us waste no time jumping in the boxing ring of life in order to throw back some blows.

Think about it, most bullies today hide behind their computer keyboard. You may state an opinion or even a fact, and because a person may not agree with your stance, they are ready and willing to attack with their responses. How many of us attack back? Do you feel the need to put the person in their place and let them know that you’re not willing to accept their bullying keyboard behavior?

Most of us do indeed fight back! The offensive message bubbles over in us and we have to address what was said.

You Hurt Me.

revengeOn the other hand, there are moments in life when we feel betrayed or done wrong by those we love. What do you do when someone close to you offends you? Is it ok to fight back?

We live in a world today where most are fighting back, and we are not holding our peace nor turning the other cheek.

Have you ever considered that there is no need for revenge? Our Playbook lets us know that God will fight for us (Exodus 14:14). He will fight for us only if we are willing to allow Him to do so. Allowing God to fight for you may appear to others as if you’re losing by not fighting back, but I’ve never seen God lose a battle yet!

We serve the all-knowing, all-powerful, winning Savior! You are more than a conqueror through Christ, but you must be willing to humble yourself and trust that the Creator knows more than the created.

So, what’s the play call?

  • There is no need for revenge. Chill. Please get out of the way of God’s work and His timing. He is well able to take care of a situation far better than you! Are you willing to trust Him?

I will take revenge; I will pay them back. In due time their feet will slip. Their day of disaster will arrive, and their destiny will overtake them.” Deuteronomy 32:35 NLT

  • Pray for anyone who uses you. Yes, that’s what I said, pray sincerely and earnestly for those who knowingly take the time to use you for their own benefit. Today, we call them “opportunists.” Pray for people who have no depth, and known ill intent. Even in knowing there is a hidden agenda, continue to pray for them! Who better to deal with a wicked heart than God? He can transform any life – He transformed yours!

But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.” Matthew 5:44 KJV

  • Don’t use your success as a weapon. There is a quote that many people who are hurting use, “the best revenge is your success.” Honestly, if you’re driven to be successful just to show off to your enemies, you’re only displaying the bitterness that exists in your heart. Let your intentions and your success be clear of vengeance. Reach for and obtain success because that’s a part of your inheritance package as a King’s kid – not because you want others to “see” how you “made it” without them.
  • Love is always the order of the day. Love covers. Love is that warm blanket fresh out of the dryer after being outside on a cold wintery day. Love reassures you, love affirms you, love blankets itself around you and covers you. If you’re at a lost on what to do or how to treat someone who has clearly and blatantly done you wrong, love them! Love changes everything.

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” I Peter 4:8 NIV

Teammates, your will to please God should always outweigh your will to please the world. Let’s all become better, together.

Much Love.

Abundance from the Good Shepherd

good shepherd

The Lord is my Good Shepherd, I Shall Not Want!

good shepherdThink about that statement. It is boldly stated with confidence and assurance.  There is no worry in the words that have been stated, neither is there any doubt.  It is what it is and if you can say the Lord is your Good Shepherd, you too can boldly say, “I shall not want!

Think about the responsibilities of a shepherd.  In the stories I have read, they guide, lead, protect, and feed the sheep.  Even when it’s time to trim their coats, the shepherd makes sure the sheep are not harmed in the process.

A few characteristics of shepherds are loving, kind and caring; the Bible even gives an illustration of this in Matthew 18:12-13.  It states, “if a man has a hundred sheep and one of them wanders away, what will he do?  Won’t he leave the ninety-nine others on the hills and go out to search for the one that is lost?  And if he finds it, I tell you the truth, he will rejoice over it more than over the ninety-nine that didn’t wander away.”

That’s the love of the Good Shepherd!

He Maketh Me to Lie Down in Green Pastures

He leadeth me beside the still waters.  He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.  I was taught that when you see the “eth” on the end of words like maketh, leadeth, restoreth, it means to continue.  This means it will never stop.

God is continuously making me lie down in green pastures, continuously leading me beside still waters, and continuously restoring my soul.  The soul is our mind, our will and our emotions, and it is continuously being restored for His namesake.   If we would just renew our mind, like the play call in Romans 12:2, He will restore it and once our mind is restored, our will and emotions line up to His will.  What a great promise!  God cares about every part of us!

I Don’t Fear the Valley of the Shadow of Death

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.  God has not given us the Spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).

God has a perfect plan for the lives of believers and we get to participate in it.

The Shepherd Preparest a Table Before Me

…in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.  The table is set, Team, are you ready to eat?

Imagine living the type of life where you are getting better and better, every day in every way and it shows.  Imagine reading scriptures like those presented in this article and believing and acting on them (James 2:18); oh, my goodness, the possibilities!

Imagine living a life with no fear.  The Bible says in 1 John 4:18, “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear; because fear hath torment.  He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”  Fear is no match for the power, love, and sound (renewed and restored) mind that God gives.

Goodness and Mercy Follows Me

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. This is my confession, not only today, but every day.

SO, WHAT’S THE PLAY CALL?

The table is set, come eat!

Will you receive the Word of God in this season of your life?  Will you prepare to eat at the table that is already set for you?  Remember God is love, and He is perfect and as scripture tells us – perfect love casts out all fear.

Are you willing to read the Holy Bible and learn more about God?  There is a fantastic abundant life with your name on it (John 10:10), will you receive it?

Domestic Violence Awareness: A Time to Leave

domestic violence awareness

As Domestic Violence Awareness month closes, I wanted to write a special message to all of the people who tell victims of abuse to stay in the abusive relationship and work things out. My message to you is: Everything has a time limit.

A Time to Flee and Avoid Danger

Let’s take a look at Acts 19.  In this chapter, Paul arrives in Ephesus and begins to teach in the synagogue. Acts 19:8-10 (MSG) says, “Paul then went straight to the meeting place.  He had the run of the place for three months, doing his best to make the things of the kingdom of God real and convincing to them. But then resistance began to form as some of them began spreading evil rumors through the congregation about the Christian way of life.  So Paul left, taking the disciples with him…”  Take a look at the cause and effect that took place here.  Cause:  Resistance formed and evil rumors spread.  Effect: Paul left with the disciples.  Paul tried his best to reveal the true and living God and the hope that we have in Jesus, but not everyone was convinced.  But instead of just leaving peacefully and allowing those who did believe to learn about Christianity, some people chose to turn the synagogue into a hostile environment. Instead of sticking around for things to turn ugly, Paul left and started to teach elsewhere.

Let me give you another example from the Old Testament.  In Exodus 1, we find out that the king of Egypt became scared that the Israelites would eventually overpower the Egyptians because of how numerous they had become. So, the king decided to enslave the Israelites.  The Egyptians made the Israelites’ “lives bitter with harsh labor in brick and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields; in all their harsh labor the Egyptians worked them ruthlessly” (Exodus 1:14 NIV).  The king even ordered the Israelite’s newborn baby boys to be killed at birth.  The Israelites endured slavery for many years until God called Moses to deliver them out of Egypt.

Domestic Violence is a Trap of the Enemy

As a domestic violence advocate, here’s what I know:

Abusers want to have power and control over their spouses.

domestic violenceThey want to control their spouse to the point that their spouses are afraid to make a move without their approval.  The abuser’s desire for power and control can become dangerous, and many times, fatal.  Abuse doesn’t always leave visible scars that heal with time.  Most victims have the hardest time healing from the psychological, emotional, and verbal scars that they cannot seem to erase.

Abuse is real and it happens in way more households than what’s reported.  Victims of abuse have different levels of tolerance for abuse, so some will immediately leave, some will leave after many years, and some may never leave.

Team, it is not up to us to judge the victim, it is up to us to assist the victim.

I also know that God does not expect us to stay in situations that have the ability to become abusive or violent, nor does He expect us to stay after it has become abusive or violent.  God wants us to value ourselves and our wellbeing enough to leave.

The reason I chose those two examples is that they are completely different.  Paul left in Acts 19 before things became violent and he became a victim.  In Exodus, the Israelites were enslaved for so many years that they became used to the abuse and God had to intervene. These are the types of cases I see in my work as an advocate at a domestic violence shelter on the regular.  Some women leave before things escalate and some women come to us after decades of abuse.

So, What’s the Play Call?

No matter where a victim of abuse is on her (or his) journey to leaving an abusive relationship, it is a God-given right to leave; no one, especially not a Christian, should cast guilt on someone for making personal safety a priority.

As a matter of fact, her community should support her and help her escape to safety like the believers in Thessalonica did for Paul, when some of the Jews formed a mob to hunt down Paul and Silas in Acts 17.  The mob broke into the house of a friend of Paul and Silas, and when the mob could not find them, they dragged the friends out of the home to go before the city officials.  “That night, under cover of darkness, their friends got Paul and Silas out of town as fast as they could” (Acts 17:10 MSG). Paul and Silas had some great friends who valued their lives. Believers should do the same for anyone who is trying to escape abuse.

CeCe Winans Spreads Good News and Cheer in New Christmas Album, “Something’s Happening!”

cece winans something's happening

“A desire to do something “better and fresher” than what she’s done before led CeCe Winans to record Something’s Happening, a new holiday album”  — Billboard Magazine

CeCe Winans Releases A Treasure Trove of Christmas Songs in Something’s Happening!

cece winans something's happeningAward-winning singer CeCe Winans gears up for her 4th holiday recording, Something’s Happening! A Christmas Album (Puresprings Gospel/ Thirty Tigers).  The 11-track musical delight features Christmas classics and new songs perfect for holiday gatherings and trimming the tree. The contemporary collection of compositions is available at iTunes, Amazon, Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora, Barnes & Noble, and other music retail outlets.

Once again, Winans teams up with her son Alvin Love III, a Grammy-winning producer, to deliver a smorgasbord of festive songs that will have listeners coming back for more each year.  Something’s Happening! A Christmas Album will no doubt be added to consumer’s holiday stash of favorites.  Alvin penned 5 new songs for this spirit-filled Christmas album, incorporating five classic tunes with a distinctive musical twist.  He went the extra mile and invited the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Tim Akers and recorded at Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall in Zagreb, Croatia.

We were inspired by the Christmas albums from the golden era of symphonic popular music. This album is grand in scale and spectrum. Each song is accompanied by a 75 piece orchestra and brings out a different color in CeCe’s voice, some colors will be familiar some will be new. It’s a big sound and we’re really proud of it”, says Alvin.

The melodious sound of “This World Will Never Be the Same” reminds listeners how much the world has changed, but gives us hope for a better tomorrow.  The whimsical, “Giving Season” paints a vivid picture of Christmastime and the spirit of giving while the classic, “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” delivers familiarity in the beginning, but midway through the song the tempo changes to flavorful and rhythmic percussions.  In a festive contemporary seasonal carol, “It’s Christmas,” Alvin Love’s crafted tune will have you swaying and singing along.

Recently Billboard Magazine premiered the single, “It’s Christmas” noting its upbeat, Motown-flavor that apparently had some musical influence on the Detroit born singer.  This is Winans’ first solo Christmas album since the release of His Gift in 1998.

Winans is open to branching out musically and has this to say about the new album, “It’s been a long time. I just felt like I could do something that was better, something that was fresher. It was time to do a new one, and I’m pretty pleased with it. I think it’s fresh, and fun. I’m glad I did it.

The vocals are masterful on this album and Winans doesn’t fail to seal her signature sound into each song. From start to finish, this album brightens the smile and lightens the heart, reminding us of the true meaning of the season. Something’s Happening!  A Christmas Album will make the perfect Christmas gift and stocking stuffer.

Seasons Change: How to Handle a Life Shift Without Going Into Shock

seasons change

Seasons Change and Come at You Fast

I live in Indiana. This past spring, there was no spring. As soon as the “seasons changed”, it was 90 degrees outside and we were in summer before we were ready for it.

Everyone had purchased their kiddos the cutest raincoats and rain boots and had to put them away and pull out the shorts and tank tops. Currently, it’s autumn… a.k.a. fall (according to the calendar and the folks on television), but it feels like the middle of winter outside. I mean, 30 degrees in the morning and even colder at night is definitely not fall weather as I remember it.

In fact, we’ve only had one fall day so far. It was an amazing 67-degree day that had everyone in their feels and drinking pumpkin spice everything. The next day we were feeling the summer heat again. Now, it’s cold.

I got up one morning and got in my car to head to work and noticed that my windshield was foggy. So, I turned on my wipers, you know, thinking it was just a little dew and quickly realized that it was ice. Ice. On my window. In October. A mess!

In both cases, us Hoosiers had to adapt to the weather changes or be completely ill-dressed and uncomfortable. See, it didn’t gradually get colder. Nope, we went to sleep one night in summer and woke up to winter. So, currently, I am leaving for work in the coat, scarf, hat, and gloves that I hadn’t planned on wearing until at least the end of November. After Thanksgiving (rolls eyes).

Did Your Current Season Creep Up on You?

seasons changeOften, we are placed in seasons that we may not necessarily be ready for – at least in our own opinions. Most times, we try our best to prepare for what comes next. But, what do you do when what comes next isn’t what we prepared for? How are we supposed to cope when we skip from step 2 to step 8?

Well, we must trust God. He is the only one who knows our story’s end. Our Playbook says in the New Living Translation of Isaiah 46:9-10, “Remember the things I have done in the past. For I alone am God! I am God, and there is none like me. Only I can tell you the future before it even happens. Everything I plan will come to pass, for I do whatever I wish.”

Just like winter hitting early was a shock to my system, there are times when life’s seasons change and shock me as well.

So, What’s the Play Call?

No matter the case, whether it be natural or spiritual, we must adapt and dress properly when the seasons change. Allow God to be your meteorologist and seek Him for the proper dress – especially when there are no signs of the quick switch. Recognize that your season “skip” won’t always come with a fair warning – just like our summer to winter shift here in good old Indiana. Here are a few Team tips to help us when we enter unexpected seasons:

  1. Seek God. Only He knows what’s up next and no matter how “prepared” we are, we won’t ever know exactly what to expect without His help. “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33
  2. Dress for the weather. You may be expecting your fall season and walk outside to a temperature of 30 degrees, like I did. You may have to walk back inside and put on your coat and gloves. In any event, do not be so disappointed that you never change. “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” Ephesians 6:11
  3. Realize what time it is. Sometimes, God adjusts our seasons to help us focus on the time He is calling us to. Some seasons He may have us to skip over, while some may seem to last longer. Seek Him on what He would have you to learn and gain from each. “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:” Ecclesiastes 3:1
  4. Know that God is with you. It may seem as if we are alone in times that we aren’t prepared, but we must always remember that God will not leave us. He is right there when we need Him. “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Hebrews 13:5

No matter what season you are in or feel you should be in, God allowed you to be there so trust Him! God will see you through and give you the proper tools and covering to handle it.

How Self-Righteous Anger Opposes the Righteousness of God

Today’s Scripture Lesson: Psalm 71

As always, before you continue reading, I invite you to open your Bible and read the text in its entirety.

As I’ve been slowly studying the Psalms, I continually encounter specific words with a high degree of frequency. One such word is “righteousness.” In this Psalm alone, the psalmist uses the word 5 times.

Let’s highlight some verses from this Psalm which use the word “righteousness”:

  • In You, O LORD, I have taken refuge; let me never be ashamed. In Your righteousness deliver me and rescue me; incline Your ear to me and save me. (vs. 1-2)
  • My mouth shall tell of Your righteousness and of Your salvation all day long; for I do not know the sum of them. I will come with the mighty deeds of the Lord GOD; I will make mention of Your righteousness, Yours alone. (vs. 15-16)
  • For Your righteousness, O God, reaches to the heavens, You who have done great things; O God, who is like You? (v. 19)
  • My lips will shout for joy when I sing praises to You; and my soul, which You have redeemed. My tongue also will utter Your righteousness all day long; for they are ashamed, for they are humiliated who seek my hurt. (vs.23-24)

Let’s add to these verses, two verses from the first chapter of James:

  • …Everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God. (James 1:19-20)

It may seem a bit out of left field that I chose this passage from James. It was for me too. Not long after I closed my Bible study time in this particular Psalm, I picked up a devotional, which used these two verses from James as the author wrote a beautiful and enlightening prose on the ill-effects of anger. Once again, the mirror of the Psalms was held up before my soul.

Let’s answer a few questions…

  • Of whose righteousness does the psalmist speak?

God’s righteousness.

  • Of whose righteousness does James speak?

God righteousness.

  • Of whose anger does James speak?

The anger of man. The anger of humanity. My anger. Your anger. (These are all acceptable answers.)

The World is Angry

angryHave you turned on the news or opened up social media lately? Have you noticed the anger? Do you find yourself wrapped up in it? Does it seem almost inescapable?

As I watch the anger unfold (and I fall into it, too), I can see one thing driving it all. Many are concerned about being “right”, and that means everyone else who disagrees needs to be proven, at the very least, “not necessarily right”. And, if you’re really good, you can prove them “wrong.” In other words, we are so consumed with our own personal “rightness” that we fail to experience the peace of God in His righteousness.

We have a new catchphrase in the church the last few years. Have you heard anyone say something like, “Christianity isn’t a religion, it’s a relationship”?

Fair enough, Christianity is undeniably about relationship, and that is one of the beautiful wonders of covenant. However, James is emphatic that our faith is a religion:

If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is worthless. Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world. (James 1:26-27)

So often I hear people argue for their anger. Certainly, Jesus demonstrated righteous anger. But I want you to consider what angered Jesus.

It came down to the misrepresentation of His heavenly Father by people seeking personal gain. Furthermore, Jesus didn’t walk in anger. Jesus walked in peace and mercy. Jesus never had to worry about being “right.” He knew He was covered in the righteousness of His Father, and He never allowed Himself to be stained by the world through the pursuit of His own personal “rightness.”

The Better Way to Righteousness

Our covenant of faith is our religion. By it, we walk in the righteousness of Jesus Christ, given to us through the blood He shed on the cross. By it, we show mercy and compassion. Through our faith, we seek the lost; we minister to the widow and orphan showing them the lovingkindness of God.

When we focus on His righteousness rather than our “rightness” our intent is pure, undefiled, and without stain. When we walk in His righteousness, we are free to show the lovingkindness of our Father without anger.

So, What’s the Play Call?

So much of seeking our “rightness” is rooted in worry. Worry is just a form of unbelief.

Do you believe God is Who He says He is? Do you believe He will do what He says He will do? There is no sense answering these questions dishonestly, Team.

Matthew 6:31-33 tells us, “Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ …for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

If you have trouble believing those things, it’s OK to pray the same words the man spoke to Jesus in Mark 9:24, “I do believe; help my unbelief.

Finally, take time to pray that the Holy Spirit will bridle your tongue – and maybe your fingers when you’re sitting at the keyboard on your social media.
