Mindless vs. Mindful Eating: Does Eating Without Intention Affect Your Health?

mindful eating

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. –Paul, 1 Corinthians 10:31

A healthy lifestyle is comprised of several necessary parts, one of which is mindfulness. Meal plans can provide information about what to eat and when, but what they can’t contribute is mindfulness around the meal.

Are you actually hungry?  Did the meal satisfy you?  Do you feel overly full?  Did the meal appeal to and engage all of your senses? Did you have guilt or a negative emotion during or after the meal?

Mindful eating is eating with intention while paying attention.
– Kati Konersman, RD

It is so easy to combine mealtime with other activities like monitoring our social media channels, responding to emails, flipping through paperwork and making appointments.  As we multi-task plowing through our day’s work, we find we didn’t really “taste” the meal and didn’t give any attention to our hunger or satiety cues or even our overall food experience.

While some approach mindful eating from historical mystic traditions and meditations, the idea of being present, enjoying your food experience and noticing how your body responds is an act that celebrates God’s amazing design of our body and mind connection.

The art of mindfulness is a learned practice that takes time to develop like any cultivated skill. This one practice can have long-term effects in helping us identify negative emotions around foods, learn to notice body signals and ultimately lead a healthier lifestyle.  Let’s celebrate the amazing mechanisms, systems, and signals God has given us to moderate and enjoy food!

Where Are You…When You Eat?

Re-learning how to be present during mealtime may sound difficult, but there are easy strategies you can implement today to begin training yourself in mindful eating.  Not only can this practice help you learn to become more intentional and increase your awareness, but I believe it awakens us to appreciate and celebrate God in all His glory!

  • It is He who intricately created our bodies to let us know when it needs nourishment and when we have had enough.
  • It is God who created food with a variety of flavors, scents, and textures so that we could enjoy an array of food experiences.
  • It is the Ultimate Designer who gave us taste buds that differentiate between sweet, sour, savory, salty and bitter.
  • It is God who gives us the creativity to put diverse foods together in such a way that we can eat a different meal every time we eat!

Are you compelled to adopt a mindful eating approach?  Here are 6 strategies to get you started!

eating

Begin EVERY Meal With Prayer

Sadly, praying before meals has turned into a thoughtless ritual for many people.  If you have young children, like myself, I find myself rushing through our prayer because once kids say they are hungry, they don’t stop.  But, praying before the meal is this amazing opportunity to stop, take a deep breath, and sincerely thank God for providing nourishing food for you to eat.

Prayer doesn’t need to happen at dinnertime only – where did we get that impression? Challenge yourself to pray over your food EVERY time you eat.  In addition to thanksgiving, this is also an opportunity to thank the Lord for self-control, a fruit of the Spirit you already have IN YOU!

What if after praying we actually took a minute to listen?  What if after we talked, we actually allowed God to say something before we picked up our fork?

Praying over your food and your mealtime experience could be the one strategy that could literally, change your health.  I dare you to give it a try.

Identify Your Hunger and Satiety

Mealtime tends to be at designated times during the day, but are you really hungry?  How do you know?  If you are using a clock to tell you it’s time to eat, then you need to rethink your strategy.  At your next meal, these are some questions to ponder so that you can become more connected to your body’s signal for nourishment and satiety.

  • What does hunger feel like?
  • How do I rate my hunger now on a 0-10 scale?
  • What is the difference between being satisfied and full?
  • How ‘full’ do I want to feel when I leave the table?
  • It is true that due to biological processes, my body should be ready for another meal within 3-5 hours?  This strategy is not about skipping meals but simply giving more attention to the internal signals at work in your body.

Take 20-30 Minutes to Eat Meals

For some individuals, fast-paced meals feel innate and natural. Maybe they grew up with this practice or maybe they developed it out of necessity.  But, this is also a very common reason for overeating.  Many people will describe that they didn’t realize they were so full until it was too late… leading to guilt or regret.  Don’t end your meals with negative emotions or indigestion!  Take 20-30 minutes to eat your meal and allow your body to signal when it is satisfactorily full.  If this is a struggle, these are a few ideas to try to slow down mealtime:

  • Try to pace yourself with the slowest person at the dinner table.
  • Set your fork down EVERY TIME you take a bite.  You can do it!
  • Set a timer for 10 minutes and pace yourself to eat half of your plate; then reset and eat the other half.
  • Talk to your family about slowing down, and chewing your food 15-20 times before swallowing.

Smell, Taste and Savor Your Meal

If you closed your eyes and allowed the aroma of a food to waft in your nose, would you be able to identify it?  Can you identify different ingredients from the aroma?  When you take a bite, can you pick out the different flavors?  Do you notice sweet first?  Salty?  Savory? Bitter?

God gave us every seed-bearing plant to eat for food.  He called it, “Good.”  It can certainly taste pretty good too if we decide to notice.

Designate a Place for Meals…

…Ideally at the table.  Eating while driving, standing, walking… it is practically impossible to practice mindful eating when we are chewing (or inhaling!) on the run.  In order to “eat intentionally while paying attention,” we must position ourselves to do so.

If you are at a party, find a spot to sit down, pray and then enjoy your food mindfully.  If your meal is rushed to get out the door for an appointment or practice, make a note to begin scheduling the appropriate time to eat and clean up after your meal so that you are not hurried tomorrow.  If you are traveling, find a rest stop with picnic tables to sit down and eat a meal.  Associate mealtime with sitting at a table and encourage your family do the same.

Remove the Distractions

Technology may be the biggest hindrance to the successful, consistent practice of mindful eating. These devices command our thoughts so that we are mentally detached from our food experience.  This gives us the opportunity to clean our plates without a second thought and certainly with less pleasure.  If you decide you want to pursue a mindful approach to your eating habits and behaviors, make a commitment to turn off the television, move away from your computer, and leave your phone in your pocket or purse. Give yourself 30-minutes of non-screen time.  The email can wait.  If someone really needs you, they will call.  And, your health outranks TV on your list of priorities.

So, What’s the play call?

Every time you acknowledge your body and its beautiful, intricate design, it brings glory to God!

Let’s move our focus from counting points, calories, and macros and instead, give more attention to internal cues God knitted into our being.  And, while we are at it, give thanks for the opportunity to enjoy food experiences with all of our senses.

4 Things You Should Stop Praying For Today

prayer

The Power of the “Ask Not” Prayer

Is “Ask, and it shall be given unto you” one of your favorite scriptures (Matthew 7:7)?

Oh, the many “blessings” that danced in our heads when we as followers of Christ heard that glorious proclamation. Needs mixed with wants topped off with our fleshly desires seemed fair game, no? We could even cite another verse that declares “Whatever we ask in Jesus’ name, He will do it.” (John 14:13)

Whatever means whatever, right?

Team, here’s where speed-dating God gets us in trouble. We can’t run off with every Bible verse that says “ask”, and not take heed to the verses that explain “how” to ask and “what” to ask for.  If we do, we’ll find ourselves disappointed and our minds fertile for the enemy to seed doubt and discontent.

But, be not deceived! The Word of God is true – yes, you can ask. But God is intentional, driven solely by His will and what brings Him glory.  God expects us to think, act, and pray according to His standard.

Why Are We Praying For _________?

prayerThe answer lies at the heart of our motives and intentions. It takes truth and transparency to see whether we are truly in need and in the proper position (ie. God’s will) for receiving.

How will you use what you have received? How will you honor what God gives you through others?  Will the answered prayer find a purposeful place in your life?

As you ponder these questions, think about the following categories of things we should stop praying for today:

1. Things that cost us nothing.

There may not be a one-to-one exchange for the things we pray for, and that’s okay. But do you put any skin in the game when you pray that others will give you something? Sure, a ride to work may cost a friend more than the $5 in your pocket, but do you offer gas money? Yes, you want and need the raise, but have you been faithful with little by showing up to work on time, completing your work in excellence, being a model team member?

Gratefulness costs – it costs you the acknowledgment and time to say “thank you” or show God and others appreciation.  Even though God is a loving Father who often tolerates His ungrateful children, it’s oh so much better to pray, receive, and pay up with a “thank you”, your worship, or committed service to God.

2. Things we already have.

Remember how grateful and excited you were to receive X? You prayed long and hard, thought it would never happen – but God! And now, you still have X, but you’re praying for an X, really?

Are you praying for another spouse, and you’re married? Do you have nice, reliable transportation, but you’re praying for a car you honestly can’t afford? Sometimes our eyes are bigger than our stomachs, wallets, and character! Don’t lose your excitement and gratefulness for God’s blessings. Seek His heart for if and when it’s time to receive more or different.

3. Things that other people have.

The desires of our heart should match God’s heart-desires for us. But, many of us spend more time drooling and desiring what others have than we do chasing after God’s heart. And here’s the kicker: God is often very gracious to bless us with UN-answered prayers.

Because we pray amiss – e.g. outside of God’s will for us – God protects us from our self-centered desires by not letting those requests see the light of day. We’re also spared the struggle and heartache it cost others to receive their blessings. Sorry, you cannot have someone else’s ______. What God has for you is for you. Desire God’s will above your wants.

4. Opportunities and chances we have no intention of honoring.

Now, this is where truth and transparency get real. Once you receive all that you’ve asked for, are you really in a position to “make good” on the answered prayer? Will you honor that second chance in a relationship, that loan for $1000 and pay it back as agreed, the promotion for which you know you’re not qualified?

If you’re not ready to honor the opportunities and chances God can give or that others work hard to give you, then it’s time to stop praying for them – and pray for the character to support the prayer.

So, What’s The Play Call?

“Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.” (James 4:3).

Ask God to give you His desires for you. Then, when you pray, God will see His heart and will, and gladly honor your request.

So, have you ever had to catch yourself, and STOP praying for something?

Team Jesus Magazine Writer Spotlight: Meet Kristina from Florida

kristina bolton

Teammate Kristina Bolton: The Preachy Writer and Speaker

We have read their words of encouragement and inspiration week in and week out here in Team Jesus Magazine. Now, let’s take an intimate look into the lives of some amazing writers who love Jesus and love to serve His Team with the power of words.

kristina bolton

Kristina, how did you come to write for Team Jesus Magazine, how long, and why was it important for you to share with Team Jesus?

Since I returned to social media in 2018, I started following Team Jesus Magazine. I admired the content and stance for the truth. I love the balanced Gospel – salt and sweet. People not only need encouragement but correction as well. It keeps us on the straight and narrow, and that’s what God desires. That’s what helps us make it to heaven.

After following the magazine for months, I saw a post that read, “Write for us!” and I heard the Spirit say “Write for them.” I submitted my application, Kim and I had a great conversation, and the rest is history. It has been a lovely and edifying experience. I have been writing for TJM for approximately five months. It’s important for me to share with Team Jesus because I love joining in on the advancement of the Kingdom. I have never been a sideline warrior; I love getting in on the action!

So, who is Kristina Bolton?

When I meet people, that’s one of the first questions I am asked. They always want to know where did I come from.  I’m new to the public, but I have been in the Lord for over 12 years. I am like David, who was anointed while he was in his father’s house and learning about God on the backside of the desert.

I am originally from West Palm Beach, FL, and of Haitian descent. I was “born again” in 2006 and received the “call” of God in 2007.  Like the Prophet Elisha, I have spent years learning and training in God under a mighty Apostle, Sharon D. Walker (my spiritual Elijah). I am the wife of Caleb and mother to our five children. I am a preacher of the Gospel. I operate strongly in the prophetic and revelation.

Outside of being a daughter of God, wife, mother, assistant, a leader in the body of Christ, student, daughter, friend, sister, writer, author, manager, and podcaster – I am just plain me. I enjoy traveling, the beach, Asian culture, and laughing with my friends. People say if I wasn’t a preacher, I could have been a comedian. The world will never know.

Where did “The Preachy Writer” come from?

kristina bolton the preachy writerThe Lord instructed me to write in 2011, in which I began seeking Him further. I released my writings to the public in 2018, but before I got started, the Lord led me to a Writer’s Conference in February 2018. I met a lot of great people. But this one woman, in particular, said to me, “I like you, I just don’t want you so preachy.” I looked into her eyes and said, “What if the preacher is who you are?”  You can believe that this was the end of our convo.

I went back to my room and began to pray. The Lord had me define “preach.” It means to proclaim or teach publicly. Understand, I was instructed by God to write – it’s not my career. It is a mandate the Lord has given me. I must proclaim and teach Him through my gift of writing.

People have really misinterpreted what it means to preach. Today, it almost has a negative connotation. Despite the industry’s rejection of preachy writers, The Lord led me to embrace the name in the same way the Pharisees mocked Jesus by placing a sign over the cross that read “King of the Jews”.  So, what I was mocked for, God will use to glorify Himself. And, I’m ok with being a rebel to industry standards. My mission is to please God and I am The Preachy Writer!

Is there any particular burden the Lord has given you for His Team?

My passion is God. He has given me a desire to help every willing person make it into the Kingdom of God. I love souls, and I fight for people. If you look at the scriptures, what separated God from humankind? Sin. So, if we can help people turn from their sin, they can be reconciled to God. That comes only through the acceptance of Jesus Christ, repentance, and abstaining from sin.  There is so much false doctrine and compromise in this world hindering people from truly experiencing God. If God changed me, He can change anyone. God has given me a heart for souls. He has anointed me to teach and manifest Him through my preaching, whether it is by speaking or writing.

Tell us about an embarrassing moment?

Oh wow, I am sure I am going to regret this one. Well, when my husband and I were just friends, we had a little gathering with some other friends. We played games, ate pizza and wings… just a good fellowship. So, as I am winning in a game of spades, I stood up trash-talking the other team. Somehow, my chair got moved (someone took it, they thought it was a free chair) and before I knew it, this plus-size princess was on her back in the corner of the room like a cockroach with my legs and arms in the air fighting to get up. As I looked up from the floor, there was this handsome man in the room, hysterically laughing (with everyone), and helping me up. I was so humiliated LOL.

Readers! Share your encouragement and feedback with Kristina!

Misery Monopoly: 3 Ways to Hang Up Your Dice

misery

Misery?

On Team Jesus?

Though we serve the true and living God, and we’ve been given all-access to the all-powerful Almighty, every now and then you’ll run into a miserable teammate.

You know the ones. No matter what’s going on with you or the world, their story is always the saddest, the worst-est, the gloomiest?

For instance, if you have a headache, he has a migraine. If you have a migraine, she’s having an aneurysm. Shameless misery monopoly.  There is no way you’re going to beat them at being the most miserable and unfortunate person on planet Earth.

The Winning Losers, Losing Winners

Are you the King or Queen of Misery Monopoly? Are you constantly inviting guests to your big, red hotel on Boardwalk for the latest Pity Party?

To be honest, I have been on both sides of the dice a time or two in my life – either shielding myself from their barrage of despair OR battling for my own claim to miserable fame.

For years, I wore “my truth” of abuse, absentee Father/Daddy issues, clinical depression, and a plethora of other doom-and-glooms on my sleeve.  My misery was justified and I had the honorary scar-badges to prove it.

It took one heck of a life-fight to stop re-telling those stories, get unstuck, and turn the pages of a life with less despair, more Truth and Love. Even as a follower of Christ, maybe you, too, are becoming aware of your addiction to sympathy and misery, and you’re ready for a change.

The Dungeon of Gloom: Keep Out!

Here are some ways we can all keep our gloom, despair, and agony levels to their all-time low:

1.  Reject the pity paycheck.

Misery’s currency is pity, and when you are rich in pity, your personal growth goes BANKRUPT!

Imagine a toddler learning how to walk, and a parent running to sympathetic rescue every time she falls down. Will that child ever learn how to take a fall and get back up on her own two feet – no! Self-pity, pity parties, being over-stimulated by the sympathy of others sucks hidden strength from your core before you get a chance to tap into it.  Don’t cheat your own personal and Christian growth with pity pennies! You are worth more.

2. Remember there’s always someone worse off than you.

Pass the mic, Team! Are you hogging the mic because you think no one else knows the song? Truth is – somebody DOES know the trouble you’ve seen – and then some!

No matter how valid our sadness, gloom, and despair may be – things could always be worse. Unfortunately, somewhere in the world – it is! There are people in this world facing homelessness, starvation, isolation, persecution, and death who would give their ALL in exchange for your worries. Yes, we face some challenging times in our lives, but none of us has a true monopoly on pain and suffering.

3.  Accentuate the positives.

Whatever you focus on, talk about, give energy to grows. What’s in your mouth? Do you emphasize that your car was almost paid off before it was totaled, OR that you actually walked away from a totaled car with your health and well-being? Will you bless the Lord at all times (Psalms 34:1)?

When telling your stories of misery, do you realize that the breath used to speak signifies that you still have life to choose differently, be better, grow, overcome, change, live nevertheless? It’s the little things, tiny seed blessings that will bloom if we’d just give them our attention.  So, if you really want to keep the gloomies away, sprinkle your life with a little gratitudewhat we are grateful for grows!

There’s Gain in Pain.

Sure, you want to win, gain something, benefit from your pain. I understand; I do too! But we must accept that whatever we think we gain from misery, gloom, and pity – it’s NOT winning and deserves no place on this winning Team!

Here’s how to gain from pain: Believe in the overcoming power of Jesus Christ, and keep living and trusting God with every baby step toward victory. Your victory will be a victory for other teammates, as we all win from each others’ testimony (Revelations 12:11).

So, What’s the Play Call?

Exchange your misery dice for the Master’s plan (Jeremiah 29:11). Trust that although rain will fall, hard times will come, persecution is uncomfortable – God’s plan for you is to prosper you through it all and give you hope and abundant life.

Plus-Size Christians: Is Weight Loss Tied to Your Purpose?

weight loss

Are Plus-Size Christians Being Condemned by the ‘Gospel’ of Weight Loss?

Before I became a Christian, I was always passionate about the truth. I despise injustice and a false balance. I was born a fighter. In school, I challenged bullies. I refused to stand by and watch the innocent be inflicted by the insecurities of another. I gave bullies ultimatums, “Leave them alone, fight someone your size.” I had no idea that when I gave God my life, He would use these attributes for His glory. Of course, I don’t go around fighting people today. God has delivered me from the wrath of man. But don’t test me, I do have righteous indignation.

Much hasn’t changed. Now, I have a zero-tolerance for spiritual bullies. I am compassionate on the ignorant, and I will check the religious Pharisee of today. Jesus was no different; He was moved with compassion for the multitude (Mathew 14:14). But He called the Pharisees “vipers” (Matthew 3:7). This is not the sweet baby Jesus people like to portray. Understand, Jesus was both a lamb and a lion. How you approached Him determined who you received.

Some like to say that correction means a lack of love. That is not true. Godly correction is love. It sets us on a path of righteousness. So, understand this post is in love and intended to set someone free.

The Gospel Over the ‘Gospel’ of Weight Loss

weight lossWhat I find interesting is that people are taking concepts of life and making them The Gospel. When Jesus preached, He talked about the Kingdom. He told everyone to repent and turn to God. He preached about holiness and righteousness so that people would inherit eternal life. Sure, He talked about the practicalities of life, but He did not make those things the essence of the Gospel. Some people refuse to talk about repentance. They will promote things that are not eternal over salvation. I want to deal with one of those topics today – weight loss.

DISCLAIMER

For the record, I am for being healthy. I believe that eating healthy and exercise are wise lifestyle choices. However, understanding a little about science, there are other components that can affect your weight. These components include stress, hormones, genetics, and other health issues not related to eating that can affect your metabolism. I shop at Whole Foods and rarely eat fast food. I am accustomed to a lifestyle of fasting because I am spiritual. Yet, I am overweight.

Why did I write this post?

Recently, I met a new teammate that reached out to me. I am sure from my pictures she felt that I could benefit from her teaching. She specializes in weight loss. I was open to hearing what she would say. I love learning. Teach me something. But, there was a specific part of her message that I had to address. She said that “a struggle with health, meant a struggle with your purpose.”

This wasn’t the first time I had heard this. In love, I told her that although I was a plus-size sister, I was confident in the call of God upon my life. My weight had no precedence on my purpose. I am a daughter of God and a servant of Jesus Christ, and my weight was not the qualification. I was saved and chosen by grace – not by the scale.

So, I thought to myself: How many other plus-size teammates have heard this and believed that they lacked in purpose because they carried extra pounds? How many people of God believe that they lack spiritually because they are overweight? How many people are scared to sing, preach, and praise God in public for fear of what others will think about your appearance? If that is you – be set free today!

What About Gluttony?

Note, everyone that is overweight is not overeating. Some may be eating the wrong things. Have you noticed that eating healthier costs more? Finances or the lack thereof can contribute to people not being able to afford healthier choices.

In the Bible, there is no scripture that says being heavier is a sin. If you define gluttony, it means greed – not only in food but general greed. The people even called Jesus gluttonous (Luke 7:34). There is no mention of Jesus being overweight, so we know that gluttony is more than obesity.

Proverbs 23:1- 2, King James Version (KJV)

“When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:
And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.”

The scripture above is dealing with overeating. However, nowhere in that scripture does it use the word “glutton.” The term is “appetite.” Let us rightly divide the Word of Truth. Glutton means greed. People in this world are greedy for more than food. They are gluttonous for money, fame, sin, and so much more.

Eli: A Plus-Size Leader

1 Samuel 4:18

“And it came to pass, when he (Eli) made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.”

Eli was a priest of God and as the scriptures say, “heavy.” Eli was chosen and used by God despite his size. His death was due to his failure to correct his children who erred in God – not because he was a larger man. In the previous chapter of Samuel, God reminds Samuel of the judgment upon Eli:

1 Samuel 3:12-13

12 In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.

13 For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.”

God makes no mention of Eli’s weight. Sin is what caused Eli’s judgment, not his weight. His weight did not keep him from operating in his purpose of being a judge of Israel for 40 years.

SO, WHAT’S THE PLAY CALL?

For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. 1 Timothy 4:8

Teammates, again, I am not against weight loss and exercise. Share your transformations; it is a great accomplishment. As believers, we need enlightenment in every area of our lives. I am for practicality. I’m only against weight loss, dieting, and exercise if people promote these topics as the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Understand there are more important things than a nice body. We need a clean soul. Plus-size saints can make it to heaven. God has a new body awaiting us (Philippians 3:21). Having a fit body is not the key to entering the Kingdom – having our souls right with God is. What profit is it to anyone who works on their body, but fails to work on their salvation?

I don’t like any division on this team. Many plus-size teammates may not speak up, but telling someone that their weight is linked to their purpose can make those who are plus-size feel like they are unworthy to be anything for God. Teaching that type of false doctrine breeds insecurity, depression, and much more. God has put in my heart to set the record straight.

Being plus size has not stopped me from serving God in my purpose. He called me and anointed me as a plus-size daughter. Making claims that weight loss is tied to purpose likened to all women with short hair or lack of hair have no glory, or that all women with long hair have glory (1 Corinthians 11:15). But, we know the truth of God, that we are more than our hair.

We are fearfully and wonderfully made. You are beautiful and worthy to carry the purpose and assignment God has placed on your life. Listen to your physician; I listen to mine. Take all the necessary actions to get yourself healthy. I will also in my plans to shed more pounds. The Bible says it does profit, but little, which means that it’s beneficial in this life. But, exercise cannot be carried in the life to come. So, before I put so much emphasis on that treadmill, I will go to my Father about cleansing me of anything that would hinder me from being with Him for eternity.

I pray that this encourages all my plus size teammates to be all you can in God. If you find yourself overeating, go to God. He is a healer and deliverer. He can take away that root thing that causes you to overeat. Likewise, if you possess any type of glutton – go to God. No greed is right before the Lord.

Be Blessed!

Team Jesus Magazine Writer Spotlight: Meet Tamsyn from South Africa

tamsyn cornelius

Teammate Tamsyn Cornelius: Creator of Beautiful Words and Things

We have read their words of encouragement and inspiration week in and week out here in Team Jesus Magazine. Now, let’s take an intimate look into the lives of some amazing writers who love Jesus and love to serve His Team with the power of words.

tamsyn cornelius1. Tamsyn, how did you come to write for Team Jesus Magazine, how long, and why was it important for you to share with Team Jesus?

I started writing for Team Jesus Magazine about six months ago after finding the publication online and being captivated by the content. As a writer and believer, I felt a strong call to get involved and write for TJM. I have since written a few articles on marriage, relationships, growth, and prophetic identity. I believe that there is power in the written word to convict hearts and bring about transformation through Jesus. I am ever so pleased to be a small part of this process through the work of TJM.

2. When you’re not writing for TJM, what are your hobbies or passions?

I am a full-time freelance writer at www.tceditorialservices.co.za and most of my day is filled with writing for various online and print publications and blogs. However, as a mom and wife, my first priority is family and I am often found doing school runs, cheering on the sidelines of a hockey field or being active in my local church in Cape Town, South Africa. My other passions include painting, travel, and ministry.

3. Has God done anything miraculous in your life? Tell us your testimony.

As a toddler, I contracted pneumonia and croup and was hospitalized. Instead of a quick recovery in the hospital, I became deadly ill to the point where my heart actually stopped and it took a team of doctors to resuscitate me. I was also given an emergency tracheotomy so that I could breathe and essentially live.
I don’t remember this period, as I was very young, but I am constantly reminded that the Lord saved me that day and that He had a significant plan for my life. At the age of 10, I decided to commit my life to Jesus and I have lived my life that way ever since. I know that I would not be alive today if it were not for Him!

4. Tell us about your background and family?

tamsyn corneliusI have always known that I wanted to be a writer. After graduating from The University of Cape Town with a B.A in Media Studies & English, I pursued a corporate career as a magazine editor. After my firstborn arrived in 2012, I decided to take the leap and become a ‘stay at home mom’ which has since developed into a ‘work from home mom’ as I now run a freelance writing business from home and get to work with some amazing clients from around the globe.
I am married to Angus who is an accountant and an amazing go-getter; a natural leader and take charge type of guy who is completely sold out for God. Together we have two kids, a girl, and a boy, and we live in the northern suburbs of Cape Town, where we have lived for our whole lives. We do travel quite a bit and have been to places such as Istanbul, Athens, London, New York, etc., but there is certainly nothing quite like coming back home to the tip of Africa.

5. Do you have a fun fact, embarrassing moment, or “opportunity for growth” you’d like to share?

Fun fact – my mind is constantly overflowing with creative ideas and I am always eager to try new crafts. I have done art lessons, sewing lessons, mosaic, painting, scrapbooking, DIY and more. I am currently trying to process the idea of a launching a series of prophetic paint evenings… watch this space! My office is overflowing with paper, paints, fabrics and more – all the time!

7 Tips on How to Lead Your Children to Christ

lead your children to christ

Evangelism starts at home.

We may have ideas of traveling the globe and sharing the Gospel with the world, but before we can connect with the unreached people groups of the earth, we may want to look around and share our faith with those closest to us first. The ministry field often starts at home by leading our children to Christ.

It was Andy Stanley who said, “Your greatest contribution to the kingdom of God may not be something you do – but someone you raise.”

So, how do we even begin to lead our own children to Christ?

Will it be hard to lead my child to Christ?

lead your child to christThe truth is that children are often more open to the Gospel than adults. They are usually far more susceptible to the Truth of who God is and are drawn in by His goodness and unconditional love. As a Father, God longs to connect with these little ones. This should give you greater peace of mind as you speak into the lives of your children and allow the Holy Spirit to guide your conversations and actions.

Remember, it was Jesus who said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these,” (Matthew 19:13).

If you’re willing to follow God’s lead and act out your faith every day, then ministering to your children should come naturally. Let’s pray for guidance as we illustrate the truths of the Gospel to our kids.

Don’t know where to start?

Here are a few pointers to help you share your faith with your children.

So, What’s the Play Call?

1. Live out your faith in front of your kids.

Your journey with Jesus should not only be ‘activated’ on a Sunday. Your children are watching your every move, so be sure to honor Christ in your home every day. Speak about God (and to God) in your children’s presence and let this become a normal part of their day.

2. Keep the lines of communication open.

Talk to your children about who God is, your dependence on Him and what God is doing in your life. Tell them about how God has come through for you in the past and share the everyday moments when you feel that God is speaking to you.

3. Create an atmosphere to serve Jesus.

Give your children plenty of opportunities to encounter God for themselves. It is not enough to learn about God at Sunday School alone. It is important for kids to develop a real, on-going relationship with Jesus that extends into their everyday lives. Use moments of worship, journaling, or creative arts to help your child engage with God in a fresh way and experience the power of His Holy Spirit for themselves.

4. Read the Word.

Share from the Bible and explain the basics of the Gospel to your children. Talk about the reality of sin and repentance in a simple way that your children can understand. Spur a passion for the Word of God in your home and you’ll develop a love for the Bible in them that may extend into adulthood.

5. Pray together.

Make prayer a regular part of your family life. Soon enough, your kids will learn that talking to God is normal and encouraged.

6. Welcome Jesus in.

Once your children understand the key concepts of sin and salvation and their need for Christ, they may be at a point to make a decision to serve Jesus. Help them ask Jesus into their hearts. Remember, a simple prayer of salvation is only a starting point on a journey with God. Invest time and effort to help guide your kids along this path. Invest in resources that will help your kids grow in their faith – music, books, ministry tools and more can help to cement your child’s newfound faith in Jesus.

7. Encourage Fellowship with Like-minded Youth.

Pray that God will give you wisdom and guidance to find youth communities where your child can nurture their faith in Jesus with other children. As parents, we can lead them. When our children experience God with other children who are passionate about Jesus, their faith will be encouraged even more.

Remember, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it,” (Proverbs 22:6).

Trusting God with My Singleness

The Dating Checklist

Years ago, comedian and actor, Steve Harvey made a guest appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show. He talked about the checklists that single people make when looking for a partner. The issue, he explained, is these lists don’t always match up to the partner that may be for us. He said that we are missing out on someone great because we settle for someone with qualities and characteristics that we think we need. He looked into the camera and yelled, “Get rid of the lists!” This was a radical idea that shook singles all over America.

Shortly after, I carved out some time and sat with a blank notepad and a pen. I was curious. What did I really think I wanted, needed, and deserved? I ended up with close to eighty-five characteristics and traits I wanted in my future husband. As my 30th birthday creeps closer and closer, I realize that my list may be a little far-fetched.

I dated the guy that was handsome with swag, the guy with a great job who’s career driven, the guy who’s outgoing and funny; the football player, the entrepreneur, and the musician.  I even dated someone with all of my top five. Yet here I am, still single. I always walked away knowing something was missing. The love that society has always told me I’d be incomplete without – THAT “love”, never satisfied.

I believe the missing piece, the void, and the empty spot that couldn’t be fulfilled, the thing that I can’t even find the words to describe – it was Jesus. Yes, I dated men from church, but their first love, their pursuit, wasn’t really for the things of God.

When your first love and your focus is Jesus, it’s hard to fall for someone who isn’t in the same place. Sure, you can fight it off temporarily, but not for long. I allowed my heart to stray from God so many times, and I tried to quiet those whispers and ignored the bright red flags. I was convinced that I could “flirt & convert“.

The List Guy: Is He the One?

I look back on one relationship in particular. This man I met was my ideal guy – handsome, charismatic, successful (understatement), charming and romantic. He wasn’t a player, but a gentleman. When I asked him about his relationship with God, he told me he loved Jesus. “Hallelujah!” I thought, my list was a real man! I mean this had to be my future husband.

He told me that since he moved to New York, years ago, he couldn’t find a church. In retrospect, that was a huge red flag I ignored, but I held onto the fact that he said he loved Jesus. He prayed before we ate, and he had a Bible on his desk so that counted for something. As I learned more about him, I was convinced I could fix this man. He had a rough childhood, and I knew that if I could be a strong example of God’s love and hold myself accountable as a Christian, his heart would change.

I became obsessed with him and the life we were building. I liked the way we looked together. I knew people passed by us and wanted what we had, strangers often spoke compliments that fed my ego. I liked that his friends told him how lucky he was to have me. I was enthralled by the fancy dinners, gifts, and sweet text messages.

Slowly, my life became his.

I wanted to fit the lifestyle, so I drank, I smoked, and I partied, more than I ever had.  I’d skip prayer meetings and ministry outings to sit on the couch and just watch TV with him. Although I knew this wasn’t what God wanted for me, it was everything I ever wanted. I still went to church every Sunday, but most days we played house together. I wasn’t asking for forgiveness of my sin, as a matter of fact, I prayed that God would bless it. I often told myself that God was in this relationship. I believed a lie, I believed that God was telling me that this was “the One”.  I would quiet the thoughts and feelings that overcame me knowing something was missing.

Months passed and one evening I laid beside him in the middle of the night, crying. Something had changed, at dinner he was cold and distant. I knew this was the end. As quickly as we had fallen in love, he fell out of it. The next morning I received an email where he stated he wasn’t ready to be serious. I was heartbroken. I’d love to tell you I knew this was the Lord and I let it go, but no. I did what every girl says she’ll never do, I begged him to stay. He asked me to wait for him, but I definitely wasn’t doing that, so it was over.

Winning Through Loss

But that’s not the end of my story. You see the Bible says that God works things together for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28).  Not love Him perfectly, but simply have a heart for Him. The verse goes on to say that he works things together for those who are called according to His purpose for them.

God has a purpose for all of our lives. The person we choose as a mate will greatly affect the capacity to which we fulfill that purpose. I have found that God knows that a man is probably the only thing that can rip me away from His plan and His purpose. I am so thankful He chooses to put a period where I’m always trying to put a comma.

In the months following that break-up, my heart, and my emotions were raw. I was at a place where I was broken. I was ashamed and I was overcome with guilt. In that time, the greatest lover my heart will ever know chased after me.

My mother had been asking me for years to take a class at my church called “Be Transformed”. Had I not been desperate for healing, I probably would never have taken the class that changed my life. When I think about what He’s done in the past few years, I can’t help but be grateful that man walked away. I would never have let him go.

I still struggle with my singleness. I sometimes question why God hasn’t brought this man into my life yet. I still fall short and make the wrong choices, but I learn over and over to choose Him. He never lets me get too far. Although I know He’ll never leave me, I often find myself begging Him to stay.

He reminds me of His love in my moments of loneliness and has shown me a romance sweeter than a fairy-tale. He’s been with me through another recent heartbreak, and I trust Him to send me a mate in His time. He knows the desires of my heart and He has promised that my obedience will be rewarded.

So, What’s the Play Call?

I won’t lie to you, I’m still hoping for a tall, attractive, and somewhat successful man. I have to make a conscious decision to let go of my list.  But more than anything else, I pray that God would send a man with a heart that yearns for Him. I pray that this man wants a helpmate to make an impact in and out of the Kingdom of God as we serve and give all the glory to God.

Apart, and together, we have a purpose and a plan for our lives. Until then, I trust that God has an abundant life for me here, in this season of singleness.

Creative Christians: Honorable Ways to Use Your Creativity to Glorify God

creative christian

Look at You Over There – all Creative and Christian!

creative christianaYep, I said it and I am talking to you. You are that woman who digs deep into her spirit and pulls out some of the most creative and unique designs one could ever think of. You are an artist by design, God’s design. You are that guy that can hear trap music and somehow weave the lyrics from “Amazing Grace” between the beats and bars where the words to hip hop words once resided.

You there – the sculptor with hands of grace, allowing your creative juices to simply flow like the Red Sea. You have been blessed to manifest God’s words through your fingertips resulting in creations that only He could have inspired.

The Creative Offspring of the Most High

Perhaps you do not see your gifts as a means to praise God and win unbelievers to Christ,  but indeed they are just that. I have had people tell me often, “You are so creative, goodness, I wish I were.” The truth of the matter is, we all are creative.

Never forget who our Father is. He has blessed us with unlimited, creative gifts for a reason. Our Bible teaches us that in the beginning, there was only God (Genesis 1:1) and by merely speaking, the world was created. Like a sculptor, He formed and molded man from the dust of the earth. Our God is Awesome, isn’t He?

His miraculous hands designed and created the woman from Adam’s rib (Genesis 2:2) and blessed him with a life mate. This is some of many creative acts of God, and they are nothing less than spectacular. The intricate detail He puts into forming the raindrops, star-stained nights, and the uniqueness that is molded into each of us are examples of how very artistic God is. We are created in the image of God and this is where our creativity comes from.

Everything created by God equates to “reasons” and “purpose”. When God began the creative process, there was no foundation or canvas, no guidelines or directions, and no motivation from others to build from. When God spoke, the world began! It appeared at His command (Psalm 33:9) and the world and everything in it came to be.

God is Intentional About Creativity

creative christianDo you get it? Your creativity is not something that just happened – it is all a part of God’s creation of who you are as an individual. The seed was planted when your mother and father conceived you. It is through our works that we are intimately and uniquely connected to God, and everything that we do is done uniquely and creatively.

Let’s admit it, we are often mesmerized by the beauty of the world, colorful handmade sculptures, paintings, literature such as poetry, and musical sounds that flow around us. God gives us the inspiration to keep our creative juices flowing.

Creativity Tears Down Walls.

For those who build walls around their hearts as a means to avoid God’s Word, creativity and art have a way of breaking walls so that God can flow like a river.

Consider C.S. Lewis’ written art, The Chronicles of Narnia. It pulls together a unique and creative storyline that shines an imminent light on Christ to those who are not familiar with Him. Readers and viewers are pulled in to the message through this strategically creative storyline. It gently opens the hearts and minds to receive God.

Creativity is Worship.

creative christianLet’s consider how we can express our love for God, knowing that creativity is a way to express our worship. Our inventiveness can also help us bring unbelievers to the Kingdom of God.

For instance, think about singer Deitrick Haddon’s song “Glory”. The song is very upbeat and reminds me of an old school jam by Mtume (one of those songs that they played in the juke joint in the 1980’s), but the words are praising God, telling a story of how our glory and honor belongs to God.

In the video, Deitrick and his backup singers are seen dancing and having a celebratory and spirit-filled time praising God. Now, I will be honest, this is not the kind of music that I remember as a young girl. Mind you, I was raised in a Southern Baptist Church and could not begin to relate what the response would have been to it back then. But, it certainly is a song that many of us can relate to today. This is another example of God’s gift of creativity in the name of Praise and Worship.

The Bible teaches us that whatever we do, we should do it all for the Glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31). That means – paint for God’s glory. Sing for God’s Glory. Write for God’s Glory. Create for God’s glory. Dance for God’s glory. In doing so, you are opening the eyes, hearts, minds, and spirits of those around you to God and His plan for their lives.

SO, WHAT’S THE PLAY CALL?

Use your creative works to praise God and bring unbelievers to know His Word.

If you are a singer, share your gift because it is a direct reflection of our God. If you are a sculptor, use your creative hands to sculpt art with God in mind, knowing that you can make anything because our Father made all of creation with words and nothing more. If you are a writer, create and share your best literary works and cover it with God. Use that creativity to bring the world to His feet and give Him the highest praise.

Break those roadblocks, doubts, misconceptions, and fears, and use your gift of C-R-E-A-T-I-V-I-T-Y for Kingdom work to cultivate change.
