Tired of Drinking Water? Here are 5 Healthy Alternatives to Stay Hydrated

drinking water

This article first appeared on Healthy Inspiration.

And the Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy you with all good things, and keep you healthy too; and you will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring.  –Isaiah 58:11 (TLB)

Water, Again?

It is no hidden secret that we all need to drink water. Every day. About 8-12 glasses. Without fail.

When I was in college, I was a professional water drinker- really! It was my lifestyle. It was normal. But as we all know, life changes and some habits become more challenging. Now, as a busy mommy, I must make a very concerted effort each day to drink water. Sip, sip!

Water is a fundamental source of life. Without it, we die of dehydration. Literally, your cells shrivel to raisins. About 60% of your body is water and every time you sweat, urinate, or produce ANY kind of fluid, it releases water. You NEED it!

Many people will say that the more water they drink, the more they want it. Individuals who create a commitment to drink water, develop a habit of doing it regularly, and eventually learn to love it and even, dare I say, crave it.

But sometimes water just tastes boring. It may not sound exciting, refreshing or interesting, especially when compared to other beverages. But most of those enticing, exotic, alluring beverages are also boast heaps of sugar, dozens of calories, and maybe even some artificial “scary” ingredients! You can find out some eye-opening facts here.

If you are looking for a little flavor or a bit of zing to liven up your beverages without tacking on a bunch of sugar and calories, I have some great, creative ideas to keep you hydrated throughout the day!

Check these out and be sure to share your favorite hydration solution!

Herbal Tea

These can be brewed cold or hot. Herbal tea is decaffeinated so it won’t dehydrate as you drink. There are dozens of flavors just waiting to be enjoyed. If you don’t think you enjoy tea, look for an interesting flavor in the grocery store. Many brands have a sampler box with several flavors so you aren’t stuck with just 1 kind.

Even better is that there is some research on specific types of tea that contribute health benefits beyond flavor. Hibiscus tea lowered systolic blood pressure by 7.2 points in one study. Peppermint tea may aid in digestion (although it should be avoided in those with reflux).

lemon ginger tea with fresh blueberries and thyme

A few tantalizing flavors…

  • Black cherry berry
  • Cinnamon apple spice
  • Coconut Zinger
  • Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride
  • True Blueberry
  • Spearmint
  • Sangria Zinger
  • Chamomile with Lavender

Sparkling Water

Bubbles… who doesn’t love a little bubbles! My husband will tell you that sparkling water is how he kicked is daily soda habit. He still enjoys a soda sometimes, but much less often. And since it is in our home, now my 2-year-old requests it by name.

Sparkling water can be found in a variety of flavors:

  • Cranberry tangerine
  • Black cherry
  • Lime
  • Lemon
  • Raspberry lime
  • Grapefruit

…Flavors galore! Find one you want to try!

You can find them in 12oz cans or a various sized bottles. For absolutely no calories, you can enjoy the fizz and flavor! We find these are best when very cold or over ice. Some brands do add artificial sweeteners so make sure to check the labels before you buy!

A few of my favorite brands…

For even more creative, refreshing beverages, add mashed berries, torn mint leaves or a squeeze of your favorite citrus fruit!

Vegetable Juice

Traditional vegetable juice brands on the market are usually concentrated vegetable juice with water, salt and preservative like citric acid to make them shelf stable. If you choose pure 100% vegetable juice, it will not be tainted with added sugars and ingredients but the sodium per 8 ounces is usually more than 600mg!! That is more than 1/4 of your daily needs! Instead, choose the low sodium version. Watch out for “vegetable juice blends”, “fusion” blends and “energy” blends which may include fruit juice concentrates, higher calories and even forms of caffeine. ALWAYS read the ingredient list before putting into your shopping cart!

Usually, 100% bottled vegetable juice beverages are about 50 calories per 8 ounces (compared to 8 an ounce glass of 100% fruit juice, that is a savings of 70 calories and 15 grams of sugar!).

If you are one of the millions of people that have a high powered blender and wonder what to do with it, making veggie juice is perfect! You don’t need a juicer to make “juice” and in fact, you want to blend the entire vegetable (or fruit) up to maintain the fiber in the “juice”. You can get creative using just the vegetables that you have in your fridge BUT, realize that some vegetables have higher water content than others so the yield and texture will differ based on what you choose. These are a few great ideas for how to “blend” up veggies into tasty drinks:

This recipe is practically a salad in a glass.

Bloody Mary anyone? Recipe here.

NOTE: Choose juice recipes that are vegetables only OR that include only 1 serving of fruit (about 1 cup or tennis ball size fruit), otherwise, the calories, sugars, and carbs will increase.

Infused OR Flavored Water

Squeeze or mash the fruit along with any herbs you desire in a glass. Then pour water over the fruit. Citrus can be zested, but avoid getting any white pith as this is bitter.

A few flavorful ideas…

  • Strawberries + mint
  • Berries + basil
  • Lemon + Thyme
  • Blueberry + Orange
  • Cucumber + Lemon + Lime

lime flavored sparkling water with watermelon cubes and mint

TIPS & TRICKS

  • This is also a great way to use up leftover herbs before they go bad!
  • For stronger flavor, puree the fruit in blender or food processor. Pour into ice cube tray and freeze. Add ice cubes to water and as they melt, they will flavor the water.
  • You can infuse sparkling water and herbal tea as well to create hundreds of combinations!

Link to a few water infuser water bottles and pitchers.

Looking for a water infuser? This 32ounce infuser water bottle holds a lot of water so you don’t have to keep refilling (my personal pet peeve). It’s dishwasher safe too! You can grab a water infuser pitcher like this one to keep in your fridge for the entire family to enjoy. But, in reality, you don’t need a special device to ‘infuse’ flavor- you just need a pitcher, some water, and your preferred flavor enhancers!

Watermelon Water

Those huge watermelons still around at the end of summer feed an army, but if you don’t have an army, you end up with half a watermelon in the fridge while you scour the internet for another way to use it up (like me!). Watermelon water is pureed watermelon mixed with water using a 1:1 ratio. It is super simple and perfectly delicious! Your kids (and you) won’t ask for juice at mealtime when you offer this!

Simple Watermelon Water

Puree cubes of seedless watermelon in a food processor or high powered blender. Mix 6oz watermelon puree with 6oz water (or sparkling water). Add a bit of torn mint if you want! Perfectly refreshing!

Ideally, we would all aim to make at least half of our daily fluids 100% pure water- nothing else. But, there is nothing wrong with adding a little zing or flavor to your water to help you take a few more sips.

Cheers!

Go Scared: How Confidence Comes After Obedience

go scared
Photo: Greenville Journal

I went down the body slide at Carowinds amusement park.

No inflatable tube to sit in.

Just my body and the slide.

And, my body didn’t slide onto the slide.

There was a platform to stand on. The door closed. Someone pressed a button, and I was dropped onto the slide.

But, before they closed the door, they informed me that the cotton t-shirt I was wearing to cover my rolls – it had to be removed.

So, let’s recap.

  1. Body slide. No tube.
  2. Sports bra and stomach rolls.
  3. A floor that drops out from under you.

I’ll Go Last

My husband went first. Then, my 7-year-old daughter. When my daughter went, everyone peered over the top of the stairs to see her come out on the other side. When we saw her, we cheered!

And then, it was my turn.

Honestly, I wanted to chuck up the dueces and run away shouting, “I’m good,” but, I couldn’t walk away knowing:

  1. Two courageous souls were waiting at the bottom for my body to shoot out of that slide – one of those souls being 7 years old!
  2. I’d miss an opportunity to be brave.
  3. This would be an adventure we’d remember forever.
  4. I’d feel like a sucka.

So, I stuffed my shirt inside my shorts. Stepped inside the tube. Crossed my arms, and hoped to die. Just kidding. I crossed my arms across my chest. I crossed my feet at the ankles. The door closed and I took a deep breath, waiting for the floor to give way.

Clang! (Bottom falls out…)
Whoosh! (I’m sliding…)

I did it.
I’m okay now.
I can’t see.
Can I move my arms to wipe my eyes?
I’m doing this!
Am I going to drown?
I don’t have on a shirt.
I can see the light.
I’m almost to the end.

(Sees sunlight & family walking towards me)

OMG! I made it out alive!

The Exhale After Obedience

Why did I tell you this story besides the fact that I wanted you to know how incredibly awesome I am?

I’m sharing this story with you because I want you to know that your most memorable moments live right on the other side of fear.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9

I’m not trying to over-spiritualize the body slide at Carowinds. But, I am telling you that fear can keep you from the most amazing experiences of your life.

Can you imagine how Moses must have felt when he crossed the Red Sea? (Exodus 14:10-13; 22-31)

Can you imagine how Esther must have felt when the king agreed to see her? (Esther 4:9-16; 5:1-6)

Can you imagine how Jehoshaphat must have felt when his enemies killed each other and his soldiers didn’t even have to fight? (2 Cor. 2:1-30)

There was probably a little boot-shaking as they said, “Yes”. But, in the midst of their fear, they still trusted God to be who He said He is and do what He said He would do.

Their obedience gave God an opportunity to show Himself faithful and He showed up and showed out.

Go Scared

Many times we want to go into the situation with boldness and certainty, swag on ten and feeling like “the (wo)man”.

But, God tells us to GO when it looks bleak, when we’re trembling and wanting so badly to run in the opposite direction.

The truth is, when we feel like we got it under control, we’re not as careful. We become casual, comfortable, and reckless.

Can you remember the last time you were home alone and felt afraid? Did you double check the locks and chains? Did you make sure your phone was charged? Did you peep in on your babies?

What about the last time you drove in the pouring rain? The kind of rain where your windshield wipers are maxed out, the radio’s turned down, you’re sitting straight up and could kiss the kind soul in front of you who turned on their hazard lights…

When we need God to act on our behalf, we’re more alert, we call on God, we listen and we obey.

We walk like a newborn giraffe in the beginning, but when God shows up and wrecks the place, we strut like Denzel walking away from an exploding car.

So, what’s the play call?

You know the quote:  “You have to do something different if you want to see something different?

It’s real.

What got you here can’t take you there. And, when you get there, chances are you are going to find out you have to take your shirt off and the bottom will, in fact, fall out from under you.

My question to you is: What are you willing to do to be who God has created you to be? Are you willing to step out of your comfort zone? Are you willing to go if the person before you turns back? Are you willing to be embarrassed?

The decision you make at this juncture is everything.

Remember, confidence comes after obedience.

See you at the bottom – shirtless and unstoppable!

Yes! I would like prayer. Please pray for me.

GOD FRIENDED ME: Coming to CBS September 30th

What Would You Do With A Friend Request from God?

GOD FRIENDED ME is a humorous, uplifting drama about an outspoken atheist whose life is turned upside down when he receives a friend request on social media from God and unwittingly becomes an agent of change in the lives and destinies of others around him.

Miles Finer is intelligent, hopeful and optimistic, but he doesn’t believe in God. This puts him at odds with his father, Reverend Arthur Finer, a beloved preacher at Harlem’s Trinity Church for 25 years who is stung by his son’s strong rejection of his faith. Miles feels he’s found his purpose in life hosting a podcast where he’s free to speak his mind, but that changes when he receives the ultimate friend request.

After repeated pokes by God, Miles’ curiosity takes over, and he accepts the request and follows the signs to Cara Bloom, an online journalist suffering from writer’s block. Brought together by the “God Account,” the two find themselves investigating God’s friend suggestions and inadvertently helping others in need. Joining them on their journey are Miles’s supportive sister, Ali, a doctoral psych student by day and bartender by night, and his best friend, Rakesh, a sometime hacker who helps Miles and Cara research the enigmatic account.

Miles is set on getting to the bottom of what he believes is an elaborate hoax, but in the meantime, he’ll play along and, in the process, change his life forever.

3 Ways to Catch a Break When Life’s Falling Apart

catch a break

Can’t Seem to Catch a Break?

I was dressed, and I went to my closet to get a pair of sandals that perfectly matched my outfit. They were tan and had buckles. I tried buckling them and, for some reason, it just wasn’t happening. So, I sat for a few more minutes trying to buckle a pair of shoes that I’ve worn a thousand times before and had fastened with no problem.

I finally thought to myself, “Forget it!” and I went to my car, got in, and began to drive with both my shoes unbuckled.

At the first stoplight, I managed to get my right shoe together – then the light turned green. I came to another light and tried the left shoe, but it wasn’t having it. I fumbled with my shoe buckle until I got irritated… well, I was already irritated before I got in the car – so I fumbled until the light turned green.

I came to my next stop, and do you know what I did? If you guessed that I patiently sat there until I fastened my shoe, you’re wrong! I sure did not!

I got out of my car and went inside with the straps of my shoe flapping back and forth. And I walked with a bit more attitude, not because of confidence, but because I felt I had to overcompensate for the fact that I refused to continue trying to buckle my shoe.

Then, it finally happened. I got tired of my shoe strap slapping my ankle; I took a deep breath, slowed down, and prayed. I literally said, “Lord, now, I don’t want to be angry, but I’m gonna be if I can’t fasten this shoe.” And you know what? I fastened it.

Try God Before All Else Fails

prayerHow often do we try, and try, and try to get our lives “buckled” and it doesn’t seem to work? We get frustrated because things don’t happen the way we feel they should and when. And, we decide that we don’t want to take the time to sit still long enough to get it together.

We’ve got to be missing something, right? I mean, so many times before, our way of life, our knowledge got us to the perfect end result, right? Not really. More often than not, God has to allow us to experience some difficulties in order to get our attention.

The scripture in our Playbook comes to mind, “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:9). So often, we neglect to ask the One who created the day that we are living in, how to navigate through the day. We fail to go to the God who can “buckle our shoes” right where He is.

So, What’s The Play Call?

Just as frustration got the better of me when I couldn’t buckle my shoe, it can get to me when my day-to-day life doesn’t click as I planned it out. Who would think that something so routine would throw me off? But then again, these are things that we cannot, and frankly, do not plan for. The enemy doesn’t always catch us off guard with the big things. Sometimes, it’s that smallest part of a “buckle” that messes us up!

Be sure that you look to God for guidance when nothing seems to be going right and you can’t seem to catch a break. Here are a few things to remember when it gets hard to securely “fasten” life:

  1. Put all your trust in God, not in what you think you know. He can help even when your plans fail you. “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5
  2. Seek God and His kingdom first. Though it may sound backwards, in some ways, prioritizing the things of God first will cause everything on your list to fall into place and on time. “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33
  3. Be patient. My irritation with my shoe only prolonged the time it took for me to actually fasten it. When you are patient, you qualify for all that has been promised to you. “And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.” Hebrews 6:15

Whatever you do, take time out to “buckle that shoe.” Allow God to guide you. I literally could not get my shoe to cooperate with my life until I prayed to God. And, just as I expressed myself to Him, He is waiting for you to do the same. No preliminaries, not big words, just “Lord, If you don’t, I will, and I don’t wanna.” He can hear you, and He’s got you. Let God get you together.

KB’s “Long Live the Champion” Goes Hard for the Forgotten Who God Remembers

Stand Up, Champion!

KB‘s latest song, “Long Live the Champion“, is a hard-hitting anthem infused with Latin flavor for those who feel forgotten or people who are marginalized by today’s society. The message in these bars are undeniably real and true:

“How you love a country’s food more than its people?”

“Yes, I love the Kingdom more than I love my nation.”

“Yes, I love my neighbor more than I love this paper.”

In his own words,

Long Live the Champion is a song that celebrates the resilience and courage of those in the struggle. It’s a resistance to devaluing those who hail from the “south side,” the global south & places often forgotten, but instead pledging our love, support, and partnership to their freedom.  “Arriba Campeón” which means “stand up champion” is the heart of God towards all those who are vulnerable. You are not forgotten, you are victorious in Him.”

Team, be sure to add this single to your summer playlist and check out KB’s tour schedule to a city near you.

God’s Heart is Filled with the Best Kind of Kindness – Lovingkindness

lovingkindness

Today’s Scripture Lesson: Psalm 85

I invite you to open your Bible or your Bible app and read this Psalm in its entirety, allowing the Holy Spirit to minister directly to you.

As I read this Psalm, I see one word jumping off the page, even though this particular word isn’t actually used in this Psalm. The word: grace. And, if I’m allowed a second word: mercy.

Let’s look at the first 4 verses.

The Lord is Rich in Grace and Mercy

O LORD, You showed favor to Your land;
You restored the captivity of Jacob.

You forgave the iniquity of Your people;
            You covered all their sin.

You withdrew all Your fury;
You turned away from Your burning anger.

Restore us, O God of our salvation,
And cause Your indignation toward us to cease.

Do you see mercy and grace yet? What do mercy and grace look like in these verses? Take a few moments to pray over these words which are being pulled from each verse. O LORD…

  • You showed favor
  • You restored
  • You forgave
  • You covered
  • You withdrew Your fury
  • You turned away from Your burning anger
  • Restore us
  • God of our salvation

Let me offer a question which the Holy Spirit lays on my heart frequently as I’m reading Scripture. This question often brings conviction and reveals the disconnect between what I profess to believe and what I live out. It’s a simple four-word question that pierces my soul:

“Do you believe that?”

Read each one of these statements above with the words, “O LORD” at the start of each statement and after each statement ask yourself, “Do I believe that?”

While that exercise for some of you may be enough for today, let’s move on to verse 7.

Show us Your lovingkindness, O LORD,
            And grant us Your salvation.

I love this word, “lovingkindness.” We learn in Romans 2:4 that God’s kindness leads to repentance. In Psalm 5:7, David tells us that we “enter His [God’s] house by His lovingkindness.” The Hebrew word for “lovingkindness” can also be translated as “mercy,” “loyalty,” “devotion,” “favor,” “faithfulness,” and “righteousness.”

So, looking at verse 7 we could just as easily say, “Show us your mercy, O LORD, “Show us your loyalty, O LORD,” “Show us your devotion, O LORD,” “Show us your favor, O LORD,” “Show us your faithfulness, O LORD,” or “Show us your righteousness, O LORD.” And through each of these, we understand that His kindness, mercy, loyalty, devotion, favor, faithfulness, and righteousness are all leading us to repentance, which is integrally tied into His sacrificial act of salvation upon the cross.

Come in a Little Closer

Moving forward to verses 8-9 we read:

I will hear what God the LORD will say;
            For He will speak peace to His people, to His godly ones;
But let them not turn back to folly.
Surely His salvation is near to those who fear Him,
That glory may dwell in our land.

lovingkindness

Two words stick out to me as I view these verses. They stick out because they are remarkably contrasting and in our language and society they appear contradictory. “Peace” and “fear” just don’t seem to go together.

The reason they appear contradictory is that we lack an understanding of how “fear” is used in the Bible. Exodus 20:20 gives us a great picture of the different faces of fear:

Moses said to the people, ‘Do not fear; for God has come in order to test you, and in order that the fear of Him may remain with you, so that you may not sin.’”

Let me get this straight – Don’t fear, but Moses wants the fear of God to remain?

Can you see the two kinds of fear at play here? 1) Fear that makes you run away, and 2) Fear that draws you closer. The second kind of fear is the one paired with peace in verses 8-9 above. This kind of fear draws us in because it is reverential, it is AWESOME, and it is deeply satisfying (peace-giving) as we enter the holy presence of our wonderful Creator.

Finally, let’s look at verses 11-12:

Truth springs from the earth,
And righteousness looks down from heaven.

Indeed, the LORD will give what is good,
And our land will yield its produce.

These two verses take me right back to verse 7. It all points back to God’s lovingkindness. The psalmist is looking toward the future with peace because of what God has done in the past. He walks in peace because of his understanding of God’s faithfulness, God’s mercy, God’s loyalty, God’s devotion, God’s righteousness, and God’s favor. He fully understands the continuing grace of God’s goodness and this truth brings him peace and the boldness to proclaim God’s goodness, forgiveness, restoration, and salvation.

So, What’s the Play Call?

It comes down to 2 things: Be and Do. Being precedes doing, so make the first thing be the first thing.

Be – in God’s Word and allow Him to reveal His lovingkindness, mercy, grace, righteousness, and salvation to you. Be – sinless, because He has covered all your sin, walking in freedom because of grace and your knowledge of Him.

Do – proclaim His lovingkindness, mercy, grace, righteousness, loyalty, and faithfulness to a world in desperate need of a Savior who loves them. For it is His kindness which leads us to godly repentance and a deeply satisfying peace as we are fearfully drawn into His holy presence.

The Art of Perseverance Makes Victory Beautiful

Perseverance

Let’s Talk About Perseverance

Perseverance means to persist especially in spite of the difficulties. James 1:12 says,

Blessed is the man that perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

James is telling God’s people not to give up. Seems lately there has been a spirit of hopelessness everywhere you turn. Mass shootings and suicides, for example, committed by people who decided to give up. People looking for a way out of their misery. I want to encourage anyone feeling hopeless or struggling to walk in faith. God formed you in His image and likeness and you have the power through Christ to not only endure – but also to overcome.

When God created us, He spoke blessings over us. Genesis Chapter 1:28 says,

Then God blessed them and said to them, Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

Did you know that the fact that God said subdue the earth indicates that there would be some perseverance required? Perseverance takes intentionality and determination – it’s a choice. We have to decide that no matter what we will persist, we will push through!

Situations calling for perseverance test us all the time – it could be a relationship, a business venture, even our diet and exercise. Sometimes, I imagine God just shaking His head at us as we give up on ourselves and others knowing that He gave us everything we could possibly need for success. It’s like when you’re watching a movie and one of the characters makes a huge and obvious mistake that causes some kind of catastrophe. You sit there watching and thinking “Really?? All you had to do was…

I’m grateful that nothing surprises God and He knew our end before our beginning (Isaiah 46:10).

Building Character that Perseveres

speed of godI think the first thing we need to do is change our perspective on the way we look at challenges. Some of us get so deep and say things like, “The Lord said His yolk would be easy and His burden would be light (Matthew 11:30)” Then, we give up at the first sign of opposition. Let’s not take the Word out of context.

There is peace, assurance, and joy that comes with a life lived in Christ, contrary to the heaviness of sin. That scripture was not meant for us to always take the easy way out or lie to ourselves about the reality of hard work and sacrifice. We are victorious, yes, but we live in a fallen world and we have to overcome some things in order to get what the Lord has for us.

Most times it’s just our flesh, but nonetheless, we are going to face some real challenges. James 1:4 says “the testing of our faith produces patience and if we let patience have its perfect work, we will be complete.”

When our faith is tested, e.g., you lose your job and you’re dealing with extreme financial issues, at that point you have to decide whether or not you believe God. We have to look at these trials as exercise training. We should get excited when we face trials because we know God cannot lie – He has to provide all your needs according to His riches and glory (Philippians 4:19).

God can handle everything, but He needs to use your faith as a vehicle to get you what you need. When people go on a diet or begin a new exercise regimen, they don’t necessarily enjoy the change, but they know that the result will be the body they want or the blood test results, etc.

So, focus on the outcome. Whatever situation you go through, find it in the scriptures, meditate on the promise attached to it, and worship Him for that – because it’s yours!

Be Like Jesus, He Persevered

It’s easier to change your perspective on the trials you face when you get a revelation of your identity in Christ. When you spend time with Him – through reading, prayer, and fasting, you gain understanding and wisdom to the mysteries of God. Then, the power of the Holy Spirit rises up inside of you on the tough days when you’re ready to throw in the towel.

God tells us in the Word that we were created to have dominion and predestined to sonship (Genesis 1:28; Ephesians 1:4). When Adam, the first man fell, sin entered the earth, making all flesh subject to death (Romans 5:12; 8:10). Now, in Christ, we have redemption through His blood and righteousness through the Spirit (Ephesians 1:7; Romans 8:10). Jesus reconciled us back to our original state of dominion, but we have an enemy, who seeks to kill, steal, and destroy (John 10:10). The Word says we need to be sober-minded because the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8). If we don’t know who we are, and whose we are, we will fall for his lies.

After getting a revelation of who you are in Christ, you begin to call things that be not as though they were. Anything you see in life that doesn’t align with what the Word says can be canceled in Jesus’ name. The Bible says the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any double-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12). We need to speak the Word in faith to destroy the works of our enemy.

My pastor said on Sunday, “Sometimes God hinders your prayer life because it’s time to make decrees! It’s time to take authority”.

So, What’s The Play Call?

  • If you are feeling guilty because you’ve given up on something you know you need to do, start again! If you needed a sign this is it (lol)! If God has given you the ability to take on whatever He put in your heart to accomplish – you’ve got this!
  • Decree and Declare! No matter what it looks like, there is life and death in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21).
  • Church support and life groups can help you push through when you want to give up. Talk to people, get a mentor, share what’s on your heart and the Lord will minister to you through the words of another teammate’s testimony.

Be Blessed and Persevere!

Christian Genocide in Nigeria: Over 6,000 Killed, Maimed in the Middle Belt

Our Brothers and Sisters in Nigeria Need Us

Team, we must sound the alarm on the atrocities currently taking place in Nigeria against followers of Christ. In a statement by the Chairman Denominational Heads Plateau and Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Plateau State, a renewed attack on Christians has left over 6,000 – mainly women, children, and elderly – maimed or dead in raids by armed Muslim Fulani herdsman in the Middle Belt of the country.

Mainstream media/news outlets have given sparse coverage of the bloodshed; we ask that you prayerfully educate yourself on these events – watch the video interview above with Human rights lawyer, Emmanuel Ogebe, and CBN’s Nigerian director, Felix Oisamoje.

For further context, read a portion of the transcript from BreakPoint: “Pure Genocide” in Nigeria.

Get involved, support organizations on the front line, and war in the Spirit through prayer for Team Jesus everywhere!

——-

Nigeria, by most estimates, is almost evenly divided between Muslims and Christians. That religious split largely follows geographic lines: The northern part of the country is predominantly Muslim, the eastern and southern parts of the country heavily Christian. The middle, sometimes called the “Middle Belt,” is ethnically and religiously diverse.

Not surprisingly, what makes Nigeria so dangerous for Christians originates in the Islamic north. There, Christians have been on the receiving end of a campaign Open Doors calls “religious cleansing,” that is, an attempt “to eradicate Christianity” from the region.

One of the most notorious Islamist terrorist groups in the world, Boko Haram, is responsible for killing thousands of Christians and displacing countless more in northern Nigeria. But Boko Haram isn’t the only group targeting Christians there.

In a statement released in late June, Christian leaders claimed that “over 6,000 persons—mostly children, women and the aged—have been maimed and killed in night raids by armed Fulani herdsmen.”

The Fulani are an ethnic group who are overwhelmingly Muslim, and their raids are not always at night. In April, Fulani herdsman attacked a group of Christians during Sunday mass, killing two priests and seventeen parishioners.  The same attackers then razed fifty homes belonging to Christians. In fact, earlier in the year, on New Year’s Day, 72 people died at the hands of a Fulani attack.

In their statement, Nigerian Christian leaders also complained about the “continuous abduction of under-aged Christian girls by Muslim youths…” These girls “are forcefully converted to Islam and taken in for marriage without the consent of their parents.”

The language used by Christian leaders in Nigeria in their statement to describe what is happening, “pure genocide,” is hard to disagree with. As was the call, directed toward the national government to “stop this senseless … blood shedding… and avoid a state of complete anarchy where the people are forced to defend themselves.”

Unfortunately, Nigerian officials are downplaying, if not outright denying, the religious dimension of what’s happening. Instead, they’re calling this a conflict over resources, in this case, over land.

Don’t believe it. For starters, the security forces are, in the words of the statement, “skewed to one religion and one region of the country,” that is, Islam and the Islamic north.

What’s more, this idea conveniently glosses over the one-sided nature of the violence in the region: The Fulani are the hammer and the Christians are the nails.

Finally, any student of the history of genocide or ethnic cleansing knows that conflicts over resources are often just the trigger that unleashes the sort of mass violence we’re currently seeing in the nation of Nigeria.

So, what can we do about this? First, we must pray, continually, for our brothers and sisters there. Second, we have to encourage the White House to continue pressing Nigeria about what’s happening in its Middle Belt, as it did during an April meeting with the Nigerian president.

President Trump called what’s happening then a “serious problem.” That’s an understatement. It’s past time to make sure that the response to the problem is equally as serious and not understated at all.

Surviving or Thriving: How to Escape the Comfort Zone in Marriage

marriage

Have you ever woken up one morning and just stared at your mate while they slept, thinking, “Who is this stranger next to me?” Or, in the heat of the moment actually spoke out loud, “You aren’t the person I married!”

If either of these statements has ever crossed your mind or made it pass the threshold of your lips, there’s a good chance you’re living in a “comfort zone” or state of complacency in your relationship. It is very likely that your mate is evolving and growing, and you have stood still in the relationship.

Have you ever been so blinded by the state of the world that you are unaware of the state of your union?

Hopefully, your goal is to do more than simply grow old together “till death do us part”, but to actually grow stronger together and cheat death by living each day to its fullest.

Living a Death-defying Life with Your Mate

Here are a few tips on how you and your spouse can cheat death by living an abundant life together:

  1. Get out of the COMFORT ZONE.

“I know everything about you and can read you like an open book” is a relationship-killing perspective to have about your mate. Every day, life creates a new page for your spouse, and over time, you are blessed to read the many new chapters.

If you’re just sitting in the comfort zone and not being an active participant in your mate’s new story, you will not recognize who your mate is becoming or has become.  Stay actively involved in your relationship to continue as the main character in their relationship story.

  1. Don’t allow COMPLACENCY to be your friend.

Do you answer “we’re good” when asked about the state of your marriage? This response can be a sign that complacency has begun to creep in.  There is always an area in the marriage that could use some maintenance, attention, and sprucing up.

Seize the opportunity to communicate the desired next level for your relationship. Also, open and transparent conversations about the issues can free you to get beyond good and achieve great.

  1. Continue to SOW new seeds into your relationship.

“I don’t like that.” Is your mind closed to new things that could promote healthy growth in your relationship? Has mediocrity smothered the fun and excitement of marriage? Take a trip, try a new adventure, plan an activity with your spouse that you’ve never done before.

Escape the Comfort Zone

If you feel your relationship has already slipped into a zone of just time together with no quality, it’s not too late! Today is the day you can pick up the relationship and create a fresh start.

  • Get to know your spouse again! Date, play and escape from those things that have distracted you.
  • Be intentional about creating quality time together to ensure the union is growing stronger, and you are not the weak link in the union.
  • Surround yourself with real, thriving couples – not just surviving ones – in order to receive and experience fresh ideas for your marriage that are working for others.

So, What’s the Play Call?

Growth and change are inevitable… Go with it! Your marriage can go from ordinary to extraordinary (Job 8:7)!

You must decide to be an active part of growth and change, or either be left out or left behind.

Evaluate whether you’re in the same place you were when you first met your mate.

If so, have a sit down with your spouse for a serious discussion about the things you have allowed to go on around you.  Then, find or create your space in the new relationship that’s active in keeping it productive.

Assess whether you have reached any of the desired destinations for your relationship. If not, what’s holding you back? Develop a Relationship Map that will get you on course to reach your relationship goals and keep you from wasting any more time.

Extreme Makeover: Lord, Make Your Home in Me

“The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you.” – Romans 8:11

DIY Won’t Work for Our Temples

I’m a stay-at-home mom and, true to the stereotype, I love watching HGTV. Home makeovers, design tips, DIY tutorials – that’s all me!

My current favorite is Fixer Upper, a show about a couple who is literally transforming their town one house at a time. The entire process is fascinating to me, how someone can put money down on a dump trusting the vision of the designer. They knock down walls, take up flooring, redo the entire layout. In the end, it’s a completely different home, one whose value has increased exponentially.

I’m sure you know where I’m going with this now…

Lord, Make Me Over?

When we accept the price our Heavenly Father paid for us, we accept His purpose for our lives. From the foundation to the pipe and wire work to the tile on the roof – He has full reign to form and process us (Jeremiah 1:5).

What a privilege, yes? Our Maker takes complete ownership of us and promises to renew our lives. That’s an honor…right?

As good Christians reading a Jesus-centered online magazine, we’d all answer yes!

But, what happens when uprooting our previous foundation gets uncomfortable, the breaking of windows shatters all we’ve ever known, and the tumbling of our walls hurts like the hell we’ve been saved from?

It’s possible we lose sight of the blueprint He’s written out for us (Jeremiah 29:11). The process takes too long. Without the picture of His promise directly before our eyes, we often give up. We chose to limit His say on the project of our lives.

You can have that room over there, but that’s it. I’ve got the rest.”

But, it doesn’t work that way. This Contractor needs all or nothing. Why? Because He knows that if an inch of the property is not submitted to His perfect will, the entire home will crumble to destruction (Proverbs 14:12).

So, What’s the Play Call?

Ephesians 4:27 advises us to “give no opportunity to the devil…And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”

Allow God’s Spirit to complete the work He started in us (Philippians 1:6, Hebrews 12:2). He is faithful to do it. Be encouraged and encourage the Body of Christ to stand firm on the promise He provided when you first said “yes” to His plan.
