Need to Get a Prayer Through? Check Your Connection to the Source

prayer

Are You Fully Charged? Charging?

I set my phone to charge last night. Or, at least I thought I did.

When I connected my phone to the cord, my device emitted a small beep.  This noise, along with a tiny light and a slight vibration, indicated that the device was connected to the power cord.  I left the phone on my nightstand and went about my evening routine without a second thought.

When I got up the next morning, I checked my device – UGH 3%!  With a full day ahead of me, a drained phone battery definitely would not work!

After a thorough investigation, I quickly discovered what went wrong.

Check the power source.

I knew that in certain areas of our home, some of the outlets were connected to the light switches on the wall. When the light switch is in the ‘on’ position, power flows from the switch to the outlet.  Anything plugged into that outlet receives power.  I took a look at the switch, and the power was on.  So that wasn’t the problem.

I then examined the device. The indicator displayed a lightning bolt beside the battery icon suggesting that the device was, in fact, receiving energy. That was strange because even though it looked like the device was receiving power, the battery still did not receive a full charge overnight as I had expected.

Check the connection.

Just when I thought I had checked everything, I took a closer look at the end of the power cord.  I discovered that the end piece that connected to my phone was broken.  This damaged segment, as minuscule as it was, played a major role in the failure of my device to fully charge.  Because I did not notice this seemingly minor detail, I forfeited the benefit of a perfectly charged device.

Small Breaks in Our Faith Walk

How many times do we, as Team Jesus, think that we are doing all of the right things when it comes to our walk with God?

Attending church every Sunday? Check!

Volunteering and serving the community in love? Check!

Supporting the vision of our ministry leaders? Check!

It appears that we are ‘good Christians’, and to the outside world we are doing everything right.  We feel like we have done our due diligence and our consciences are clear. But, when we survey our lives we may have spent a lot of time for God, but zero time with God.

Like the dying cell phone, we have the appearance of being connected to our Power Source.  Though our little lights are shining, we’ve been so busy with our own agendas and our daily routines, we hardly notice that our prayer life has been lacking and set aside.

A Time to Get a Prayer Through

prayHonestly, Team, when was the last time you prayed? I mean, really prayed?

Was it for an emergency?

Perhaps there was a crisis situation?

Did life catch you off guard?

Recharge Your Prayer Life

The concept of ‘getting a prayer through’ speaks to us being AWOL in our relationship with God.

If you’ve recently found yourself spiritually drained, here are a few ways to recharge your prayer life.

Set an appointment.

Make meeting with God in prayer the first priority of your day. Set an alarm on your (fully charged) cell phone as a reminder of your new daily appointment.

You would never think to stand up a business associate – so do not skip this most important time with God.  Before you speak to anyone else, take the time to talk to God first.  Remember, time spent with God is never wasted!

Prepare a Place.

Set a designated meeting place for your time of prayer.  To ensure that you are not distracted, prepare the space ahead of time. Make the space somewhere comfortable and inviting.  You may want to have your Bible, a notebook and a few writing utensils and highlighters available. You may use these supplies to record the thoughts and ideas that you receive from God during your time of prayer.

If you don’t know what to pray for, Romans 8:26-27 reminds us that the Holy Spirit will make intercession for us.  The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness and will guide us in our prayer.

A Formula for Prayer

Try following the ACTS model of prayer. This acronym is a simple way to help you grow in your prayer life.  Follow each letter to accomplish one specific aspect of prayer:

Adoration

Open your prayer with admiration and reverence. There are many chapters in Psalms that will assist in this part of your prayers.

Confession

This is where we admit to God our failures and short-comings.  Though He already knows them, it is during this time that we acknowledge our need for God’s power to change our hearts. When we ask for His forgiveness, He is faithful to forgive our sin (1 John 1:9).

Thanksgiving

Expressions of gratitude for God’s faithfulness are always in order.  The recognition of what God has done in our lives opens our hearts to gratefulness.

Supplication

This is where we lay our requests before the Lord.  We pray for our needs as well as the needs of others.

Practice praying out loud.  This will help you stay focused and alert while you are in prayer. And, don’t forget to give God space to speak to your heart while you listen.

Even though you may not have been faithful in prayer in the past, the word of the Lord in Deuteronomy 4:29 promises us that if we seek the Lord we will find Him. Contrary to what you may believe, God is not angry with you. Just as you are searching for God, He is also seeking you.  John 4:23 reminds us that God is looking for true worshippers.

So, What’s the Play Call?

Our lives demand that we stay alert and that we operate for God at 100%.

Turn the power on through prayer and be sure to double-check your connection!

What are some things that cause a disconnection from our Source?

Vanessa Bell Calloway on “Harriet”: Faith, Family, and Playing With a Bad Set of Cards

Lessons Abound in the Film “Harriet”, We Asked Vanessa Bell Calloway

vanessa bell calloway harriet
Richmond Times-Dispatch

As Harriet opens in theatres everywhere this weekend, stories and reviews pour in on the riveting impact Harriet Tubman’s story has on viewers – and even the actors in the film.

The incredible Vanessa Bell Calloway, currently starring as Lady Ella in “Saints & Sinners” on Bounce TV, plays Harriet Tubman’s mother in the film; she stopped by the Team Jesus Locker Room for a brief chat about the film’s impact on her life and the importance of faith, family, and fortitude.

Harriet Tubman’s Family Bond and Tenacity

TJM:
In this role and in your research as Harriet Tubman’s mom, what do you think was the key lesson she instilled in Harriet?

Vanessa Bell Calloway:
Well, I think family is where this movie has a big presence and grit. In the beginning, you see Harriet and her mother’s connection and how they’re connected to the family unit when they’re trying to go to their master to say that they all should be free because her mother was promised freedom 10 years prior, and then he went against the promise.

So, you see the deep connection as a family. And, even when Harriet decided to flee, she always got to go back and see her mama. She had to go back and let her mama know she cared. They were close, you could tell they were close.

TJM:
Did you personally learn something about Harriet Tubman that perhaps you didn’t know before the movie?

Vanessa Bell Calloway:
I did. Yeah. I didn’t know that her birth name was not Harriet Tubman. She was Araminta Ross – Harriet was her mother’s name, and Tubman was her husband’s last name.

TJM:
Exactly. She put her ‘free’ name together beautifully.
So, tell us how working on the film has impacted your life personally?

Vanessa Bell Calloway:
Well, you know, it was a part that I read and I wanted, I wanted to work with Debra Martin Chase and I wanted to work with Kasi Lemmons. It was a joy to work with Cynthia (Erivo). It was something that I wanted. So, now I have these memories forever. This is the role that I created in the very first movie done about Harriet. That’s special. They can make as many movies that they want to about Harriet, from this moment on but, I played in the very first one {laughter}. So that’s special to me.

TJM:
There are some, as you say, strong family overtones in the film, and definitely some faith overtones. How do you hope this will impact society today?

Vanessa Bell Calloway:
What I hope is that it reminds people, especially African-Americans of the fight we had. Harriet Tubman was presented a very bad set of cards. I mean, any and all of our ancestors were. And they had to do the best they could with what they had. She decided that she wasn’t gonna take it anymore. This woman couldn’t read or write. She just listened to her inner soul.

She listened to the voice of God and she let God guide her. She was determined to put her life into fighting for her people. So, I just hope that people take away that her sacrifice helped changed the course of our times, helped change the course of America, and that we can take from her and apply those same attributes to today’s time and do whatever we want to do.

Don’t miss the opening weekend of Harriet, in theatres everywhere Friday, November 1st!

3 Reasons Why You Should Eat Carbs

eat carbs

Eat Carbs with an Understanding of Their Role in Our Diet

eat carbsOn Day 3, God created fruits, vegetables, grains, seeds, nuts – all types of foods with carbohydrates.  And God saw that his creation was ‘Good.’ On Day 6, He instructed man saying, I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food (Gen 1:29 NIV).”

Seems pretty clear – yours for food– but now in the 21st century, everybody is wondering, are these foods still the ones we are supposed to be eating? What is best for my body?

It’s okay to wonder. Often this spurs us to dig a little deeper, ask better questions, and grow in recognizing our body intuition.

There is no denying that carbs have inherited a bad reputation in our culture. We hear claims that they cause food or sugar addiction, lead to diabetes and inflammatory diseases, raise our blood sugar and insulin, make us gain weight and body fat, feed cancer cells, make us bloated and the list goes on.

As happens often in nutrition messaging, there is a level of truth in these messages along with erroneous information.  Often, sound nutrition advice cannot be packaged up into a sound bite or headline. And to be honest, that is why Registered Dietitian Nutritionists are so vitally important- we help individuals create practical plans based on the science, not soundbites.

But are carbs all good? Do they have an important role in our diet?  First, we need to answer the question, what is a carbohydrate?

Carbs 101

Carbohydrate is one of three types of macronutrients (the others are protein and fat).  Macronutrients are nutrients that your body needs in large quantities for normal growth and development.  Essentially we need them to thrive. They provide our body with energy (aka calories) and maintain all body functions.

Vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants are considered micronutrients because while these are critically important too, we need them in much smaller quantities.

Carbohydrate is the primary source of fiber in our diet, something that most individuals significantly under-consume.  In fact, most people meet only ~50% of the daily recommendations for fiber. The average American consumes 17g fiber per day with recommendations to consume 25-38g for women and men (but people following low carb diets average less than 10g/day).

The Institute of Medicine recommends that 45-65% of your daily calories come from carbohydrates.  However, other healthcare providers and institutions may claim otherwise, some recommending even more and others less.

There is a very important point that seems to get lost in the carb discussion: We don’t eat carbs.  WE EAT FOOD.

Not All Carbs Are One and The Same

eat carbsCarbohydrate is a part of many different types of foods. But most foods have a mix of carbohydrate, protein and fat, in various ratios.  God didn’t make carbs. He made food for us to eat and enjoy. He created food to nourish our bodies.  In fact, it is pretty clever that within all the diversity of foods, most of them have a combination of macro and micronutrients!

Why types of foods have carbohydrates?

  • Dairy (milk and yogurt)
  • Grains (wheat, barley, rye, oats, etc.)
  • Seeds (quinoa, hemp, pumpkin, etc.)
  • Vegetables (non-starchy & starchy ones)
  • Fruit
  • Legumes (all types of beans, lentils & peas)

There are also bits of carbohydrate in some nuts and nut butters as well.  Meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, and oils generally have none or only traces of carbs.

But wait, there’s more… carbohydrate is also found in a lot of highly-processed food.  And sugar is 100% carbohydrate and has virtually no nutritional value.

When we see ‘influencers’ and news media outlets demonizing carbs, all of those whole, nutrient-dense foods are getting lumped with soda, juice, packaged muffins, fancy coffee drinks, gourmet cupcakes, trail mix & granola, honey & added sugars, refined bread & pasta, and all those crunchy snack foods we grab out of convenience.

Whole foods with carbohydrates and highly-processed foods with carbohydrates are not the same.  They have no business being lumped together all under one category: carbohydrate. Yes, they all contain carbohydrates – but no, they are not the same.  Period.

Don’t Totally Eliminate Eating Carbs

healthy eatingBefore we decide to eliminate carbohydrate because we think it is adding weight to our hips, instigating chronic inflammation and putting us at greater risk for disease, it would be wise to step back and evaluate what types of carbohydrates are we consuming and how much of them show up in our meals? Here are some questions to ask:

  • How often do fast food, take-out or restaurant menu items supplement our daily meals?
  • When am I reaching for a quick packaged snack because I forgot to plan ahead?
  • How often am I choosing sugar-sweetened beverages for the energy jolt I need to get through the day?

Does everyone need to eat 45-65% of their calories from carbohydrates?  Maybe not. Some individuals have a need for higher carbohydrate due to their activity level. Some people naturally get higher carbohydrate in their day because they choose to eat a plant-based diet.  But it’s true, some individuals would benefit from a lower consumption of carbohydrate as a way to manage their health and weight.  But does that mean that carbohydrate is the devil? Nope.

Why Should We Eat Carbs?

1. Carbohydrates Feed Gut Bacteria to Maintain a Healthy Gut.

Your gut is the home for trillions of bugs – good bugs that support your immune system to fight off infection, synthesize vitamins for good health, support heart and cardiovascular health, play a role in mood & brain function and more.  Some current research suggests that an unhealthy gut environment may possibly be connected to weight gain, insulin resistance, and diabetes.  Taking care of our gut is not only an important part of wellness but also disease prevention.

The bacteria that take up residence in your gut need to be nourished too.  And they thrive off of plants – all types of plants! Prebiotics are certain types of beneficial fibers found in a wide variety of beans and legumes, starchy and non-starchy vegetables, fruit, seeds, nuts, and yes, even grains. Not only that, but these plants also contain a vast array of other vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals that help develop a diverse and thriving gut flora.

A few plants that are known for their prebiotic power include asparagus, onions, leeks, garlic, barley, oats, apples, bananas, wheat bran, flaxseeds, cocoa beans (yay for super dark chocolate!!).  We also know that the more variety of plant foods you include in your meals, the more diverse your microbiome.

2. Carbohydrates Help Enhance Serotonin, Which Makes You Feel Good.

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter, a chemical messenger, that can help boost mood, promote sleep, manage pain and regulate blood pressure.  This feel-good messenger is synthesized from tryptophan, an essential amino acid from protein foods. We know that when our body isn’t getting enough tryptophan to convert into serotonin, it can contribute to depression, anxiety and mood disorders.

Protein-rich foods are the place to find the essential amino acid tryptophan but here is the key to getting a serotonin boost – carbohydrate.  That’s right! Carbs signal the release of insulin and cause your cells to usher amino acids into your cells, leaving tryptophan in your blood.  This makes it easier to get tryptophan to your brain to convert to serotonin.

While any type of carbohydrate-rich foods can produce this effect, choosing from the wide variety of whole food sources would be smart.

3. Carbohydrates Help Your Body Repair After Exercise.

When it comes to building lean body mass and recovering from workouts, protein is promoted, but carbohydrate is beneficial too and often overlooked.  Not only does the inclusion of carbohydrate help you replenish glycogen stores after an intense workout, but it also helps your body to secrete insulin.  This hormone tells your cells to take up nutrients like protein when they need it most – after exercise.  That is when the repair work begins and you begin getting stronger.

So, what’s the play call?

If you are following a diet plan that says carrots are bad, toss out potatoes forever and cashews are a ‘no-no’ because they are higher in carbs than macadamia nuts, then I urge you to consider whether this diet plan really falls in line with your nutrition and health values.

If you want to reach ketosis, then yes, you need to restrict, but if you want to eat a longevity-promoting healthy diet, then the instruction Adam received in the garden applies to you too.

Here are 4 tips to help you add these foods into your meals intentionally and strategically, even if you are trying to lose weight or build lean body mass:

  1. Choose whole, unprocessed foods with carbohydrates most often.
  2. Mindfully serve portions of carbohydrate-rich foods. There are 2 easy ways to do this:
    • Fill 25% of a 9-inch plate with carb-rich foods
    • Serve a portion similar to what you can fill in your cupped hand
  3. Don’t restrict. Instead, plan.  Rather than saying no to a fun food that doesn’t have a lot of nutrient value, tell yourself you can enjoy it when you occasionally plan it as a part of your balanced meals.
  4. When cravings for processed foods with carbs feel overwhelming, ask yourself why? What is motivating your desire? Low blood sugar? An emotion? A visual cue?

God’s design for nourishment from the beginning of creation is still relevant for today. And it includes a wide variety of plants, many of which include at least some carbohydrate.  There’s purpose in His design. Remember you know the Author of all things good, and when you have questions, you can ask Him.

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
(Psalms 119:105 NKJV)

Laborers! 3 Good Reasons to Get Your Good Rest

good rest

The Clock is Ticking for You to Get Your Rest

good restThe year has flown by and 2020 is knocking at our door. I can recall New Year’s Eve, 1999, and the clock approaching midnight. I was in middle school, and I remember being terrified of all the Y2K claims of everything shutting down. Life was being reverted back to a primitive caveman-like state (at least that’s what I thought at the time). Now, here we are approaching the 2019 Holiday season.

For me, it always seems like the last quarter of a year is over in a blink, and then we are back in January. As my favorite time of year approaches, where we celebrate the birth of our Jesus, I have one request of you: Don’t forget to get good rest!

If you are like me, your day starts with prayer, praise, coffee, grooming, more coffee and then work. Your work may be different from mine; it may be your career, school, ministry, or whatever you do. Work becomes embedded in our makeup; a day doesn’t seem complete without responding to an email, setting appointments, researching, checking in or something.

But all work and no rest is not a wise way to live. Our God that gave us our dreams, visions, and assignments is also the same God that rested from His own work (Genesis 2:2). Seeing that He is the ultimate and ideal example, let us follow Him and take time to get our rest.

Rest and Sabbath

good restThe Bible tells us in Colossians 2:16 to not allow any person to judge us according to the Sabbath or holy day. So, how you deal with your Sabbath is your personal preference. While I’m not strict on Sabbath days, I embrace and exercise the principles related to it.

In the Old Testament, according to the law of Moses, the Sabbath was the day that the people of God ceased from their own labors by resting and worshipping God. It was in honor of the day that the Lord rested from His labors during the creation (Exodus 20:11). That law was so serious that those who broke the Sabbath were even put to death (Exodus 31:15). Now that we are under the law of Grace, the requirement of observing the Sabbath day is no longer enforced. But, I believe that taking the time to cease from our labors is a great practice of balance, with great results.

3 Good Reasons Why You Should Get Your Rest

labor day

1. Rest Allows You to Get Spiritually Charged.

Resting is more than sleeping. According to Dictionary.com, rest is defined as ceasing from work, to relax, refresh oneself, or recover strength. God rested, but He never sleeps. One of the special things about the Sabbath is that it was not only a time of rest but worship.

I take the days I rest to stretch out in the presence of God. I seek Him. In that, God strengthens me and recharges me. It is also a time when I get to be purified and cleansed.  Now sometimes, I overdue my resting time because I enjoy being in the presence of the Lord. At times, the Lord has to remind me to get back to work, so make sure you don’t get too comfortable.

2. Good Rest is Good for Your Health.

It’s good for our health. Working constantly is scientifically proven to burn you out. We all need rest. At times we can feel invincible and our bodies have to remind us that we are human. One thing my dad always told me is that if your body is down, you can’t work anyway, so take the time to be a good steward over the temple of God. Rest is a part of a healthy diet and lifestyle.

3. Rest Allows You to Love Your Loved Ones.

Isaiah 58 is one of the passages that detail the fast that the Lord approves. In that, the Lord also mentions the Sabbath, because one of the purposes of fasting and the Sabbath are the same – to stop doing our personal will and work for God’s will.

But, there is one verse that always stuck out to me. Isaiah 58:7 says, do not hide from your own “flesh.” In other translations, they use the term “relatives.” Your spouse, children, and family are responsibilities and blessings the Lord has given you. In that rest, God says don’t forget them.

Take the time you are resting to love on those who love you and need your love.  At times, I can find myself so immersed in work that I allow precious time with loved ones to slip away. It wasn’t until I lost my dad that I truly understood the need to not take those times for granted.  Even if you don’t celebrate the holidays, spend time with people who need your love – and make time for them to love you back.

SO, WHAT’S THE PLAY CALL?

Genesis 2:2 says, “And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.”

Teammate, rest is blessed and approved by God. I don’t know if 2019 has moved along so fast that you haven’t had the time to get your needed rest, but I encourage you to make time.

Something can be rescheduled – your needed spiritual replenishing, health, and family time are depending on your rest.  As I reflect on the times I stopped from my work and rested, these are the times that have been most memorable and rewarding to my heart. It was the time I experienced God, felt my best, and made moments with the people I love.

I pray this encourages you to reflect. Take some time in this last quarter of the year to rest. I know it will be edifying to your life.

Blessed Are the Flexible: 5 Tips to Keep it Together When Life Happens

flexible

How Can We Be Flexible in the World Today?

There are certain things in life that we may always struggle with. Keeping up with the kids, getting everything done on the to-do list, the “daily grind” that seems to take years. Some days, I’m so on point. I feel energetic and ready for anything. I get everything done at home and at work and all is well. Then, I have days where everything is thrown off and hardly anything gets done or done right. I wake up late, my daughter is cranky, I hit every, single red light and then the expressway is a slow crawl.

Those days you just can’t catch a break.

Hey, life happens, right? You were created to win, but Rome wasn’t built in a day. Life is a marathon – not a sprint (how many clichés can I fit in a sentence lol)!

When they say patience is a virtue, it’s not a game! When I have those days, feeling like everything is going haywire, I can be so dramatic. And, if I’m not careful, I can spiral down into a pity party real fast. God is showing me that I need more balance. I can plan and organize, but I’m not a robot – I need to be more flexible.

Are You Easily Bent Out of Shape?

difficult peopleI believe the Lord wants us to be able to maintain our joy no matter what is going on. Even those days when you can’t find your keys, your shirt is wrinkled, and your phone is vibrating like crazy with work emails.

My pastor preached on something similar this week. He said sometimes we ask God to change something, but He actually wants to change us.

See, we become so rigid that any time something unexpected pops up, we fall apart.

Me? I hate surprises! When you’re a single mom with long days, you map everything out – it’s a science. In my past, I wasted a lot of time because I wasn’t organized, so lately I have been in overdrive trying to plan every detail.

God is helping me to find balance and to be able to go with the flow. We cannot plan everything, and we have to be able to keep it moving and re-adjust when necessary.

The Enemy Can Sense Your Inflexibility

anxious

The Lord wanted me to know that when we’re not flexible, we also become more susceptible to temptation and sin.

Have you ever been running late, but expected everyone else to be on their game?

If I leave too late to make my own coffee at home, I’m going to need everyone at Dunkin Donuts to have their game faces on – this is not a drill, people! I need everyone on the road to have their eyes front and move expeditiously. So, I’m disgusted, fussing at everyone, and hoping my manager is in a good mood when I show up 10 minutes late. This is not Kingdom, Team!

When we’re unwilling to be flexible, temptation grows out of our need for temporary fixes and self-medication. When we’re having an “off” day, we’re tempted to indulge – chocolate, ice cream, Netflix binge – many times leading to procrastination, zero productivity, even sin.

A Flexible Life Brings Joy

Learning to be flexible is imperative for sustaining joy. I am learning that I can’t control everything, and lack of control is not a bad thing.

We can rest assured that God has us where He wants us and that everything is working for our good. Let’s not wear ourselves out trying to be so perfect and just learn how to flow.

I’m reminded of the Martha and Mary story in the Bible, where Martha is stressed about serving while Mary sat at the feet of Jesus (Luke 10:38-42). Martha wasn’t doing anything wrong, but she was so focused on being a good host and being prepared that she didn’t recognize the opportunity that was in front of her – to sit before the One who had fed the 5,000+ with 5 loaves and a few small fish.

So, What’s The Play Call?

God has everything in His hands, Team (Psalm 95:4). Let’s relax and let the Good Shepherd take care of us. Here are a few tips the next time you’re feeling less than flexible:

  1. Breathe in, breathe out, repeat. Everything will be fine, don’t let “off” days steal your joy. This world and its cares are temporary. God will take care of you!
  2. Don’t be rash! Emotions can take over if you let them. Practice self-control and resist bad thoughts when they come to tempt you.
  3. Just because a day starts out rough, it doesn’t have to end that way. Forget day by day, take things moment by moment. We always have more moments to be grateful for than we think.
  4. Life happens – so learn how to be flexible. Planning is awesome, but allow yourself some wiggle room – you’ll need it. Ask yourself, “Will this really matter 30 days, 6 months, 1 year from now?”
  5. Be patient, be OK. You can only do what you can do. Be gentle with yourself. Be alright with that. Stay open to growth for next time.

Be blessed!

When What You Face is “Greater and Mightier” Than You

Greater and Mightier

That Obstacle Might Be Greater and Mightier Than You, But…

greater and mightierI am all of five feet, three inches tall… actually 5 ft 2 ¾ of an inch, but my doctor decided against that years ago. When I walk in crowds, I have noticed that tall people don’t notice me. No, really, they don’t. I mean, I’m short, but not thaaaat short. And yet, they walk right into me – chest into my face and an entire arm swinging into my shoulder kind of not seeing me.

And apparently, they don’t feel it when they knock me out because someone has yet to look down at me and apologize.

I haven’t figured it out, but I have watched to see if other “shorties” have the same problem. And you know what? I don’t think they do. Why? Well, it seems that the tall folks say excuse me and actually glance downward in order to see everyone else. But not me though, nope, I have to fight for my space in order not to get pummeled.

One experience was at an airport. A guy was walking in my direction as I was walking in his, and if I hadn’t looked up, his whole fist would have been in my mouth. Geez… I have to fight for my space indeed with people a foot or more taller than I am.

But, you know something else? I’m glad to because it’s my space. I have “excuse me’d” to people so that they would see that from where they stand, they are invading my area. I even had the thought that if God had just allowed me to grow a couple more inches past eighth grade, I’d be just fine. Clearly that wasn’t what He had in mind for my life.

We Don’t Have to be Greater and Mightier to Win

greater and mightierSpiritually, though, we don’t have to prove our space to anyone. We are given the win by living smaller than our enemies. And by smaller, I don’t mean in a literal sense.

See, I was reading Deuteronomy chapter 9, and Moses instructed the children of Israel to go take land from “nations greater and mightier” than they were.

Now, who does that? Who just goes and chooses to “take” something from an entire group of people greater than them? Bigger than them? Stronger than them? God’s people, that’s who!

Notice, the scripture does not just imply that their army had more soldiers, no… it says that they were greater and mightier.

Hear, O Israel: You are to cross over the Jordan today, and go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fortified up to heaven,” Deuteronomy 9:1 (NKJV)

Here’s the catch – they couldn’t do it on their own. A simple “Excuse me, we’re here to claim our space” was definitely not going to cut it.

God wanted their full trust to be in Him. Yep, so He set their sights on something they wouldn’t be able to obtain without Him. Verse 3 says,

“Therefore understand today that the Lord your God is He who goes over before you as a consuming fire. He will destroy them and bring them down before you; so you shall drive them out and destroy them quickly, as the Lord has said to you.” Deuteronomy 9:3 (NKJV)

So, What’s the Play Call?

I know there are times in life when you feel like I did in that airport and wished you had a few more inches on the opposition. With God, that’s not necessary. He often, purposely, places desires in our hearts that prove to be too great for us to obtain on our own. That’s on purpose, He wants us to completely depend on Him for the win. Here are a few things to remember when that goal comes up “greater and mightier” than you:

  1. God created all this. Yes, remember that. Why be afraid of someone or something when you serve the Creator of all things? “In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth.” Genesis 1:1
  2. Don’t be scared. It can be hard not to be alarmed when your situation is bigger than you, but there’s no need to be afraid of what cannot defeat you. “Then I said to you, ‘Do not be terrified, or afraid of them.” Deuteronomy 1:29 (NKJV)
  3. If God told you to do it, go get it done. The thing about going up against this “greater and mightier” enemy is that God instructed the children of Israel to go and He delivered them into their hands. “Ye shall not fear them: for the Lord your God he shall fight for you.” Deuteronomy 3:22
  4. What God wants for you is beyond your own desires. So many times, we set our sights on what is right in front of us when He longs to give us so much more. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:9

That greater and mightier thing that seems to be pushing you around, God has given you permission to overtake it! Know that when God fights your battles, you don’t have to defend your size, stature, bank account, or experience to anyone.

10 Ideas for Quiet Time With God To Inspire Your Daily Walk

Quiet Time With God Alone is Necessary

quiet time with godTime with God is an essential part of any Christian’s life. Whether you’ve recently discovered the unconditional love of God for yourself, or you’ve been in relationship with Him for decades, there is simply no substitute for spending one-on-one time with Jesus. This is often a time of refreshing as we speak and hear from the Father. In these moments, we read the Word, pray, and discover the heart of God.

The Bible says that God longs to draw close to us, His children. Like a good Father, He waits for us to call out to Him and share our hearts. Jeremiah 29:12-13: “Then you will call upon me and go and pray to me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek me and find me, when you search for me with all your heart.”

Quiet time with God does not always have to be a lengthy or traditional time of prayer and supplication. The truth is that any time spent with God is always a good idea – no matter the length, place, or time of day. During your busy day, there may be many hidden opportunities that you may take for granted where you could be engaging with God. Let’s take a look.

So, What’s the Play Call?

Make the most of every situation and allow God to be a part of your entire day. Here we share ten easy quiet time ideas with God to inspire your own personal devotion.

  1. Give God the first 5-minutes of your day.

Before you get out of bed in the morning, spend time talking to God and commit your day to Him.

  1. Spend time with Him in the shower.

I love to listen to worship music in the shower. This is a great time to connect with God, pour out your heart, and hear from Him.

  1. Spend time with God in traffic.

I recall many intimate moments during my commute to work, praying and wrestling with God about my life decisions – all from the driver’s seat of my car. Whether you are driving to work, the shops, or running errands, if you’re alone in the car, there is always an opportunity to talk to God.

  1. Find a quiet spot during your lunch break.

Set aside a few minutes each day to read the Word of God and pray during your lunch break. This could be a quick two-minute session to refresh your soul or a full hour-long time of studying the Word. Every moment with God is a potential opportunity to change your life for the better!

  1. Download a Bible reading plan or App.

Technology makes it easy to connect with God through His Word. Find online teachings, Bible study plans, and more at the click of a button and incorporate this into your day. I love the audio Bible downloads now available online. This makes for easy listening to the Word of God – in the car, at your desk, or at any convenient moment.

  1. Speak to God while you’re working out.

You may go for a run each day or spend time in the gym. Either way, use this time to reflect and engage with God. I’ve spent many special moments talking to God while jogging on the treadmill.

  1. Set up a prayer date.

You may feel more encouraged to pray together with someone else. If you’re feeling low, God may use a fellow believer to speak life into your heart. Plan to meet up with another teammate and pray together.

  1. Get outdoors and allow creation to inspire you.

There is something amazing about being out in the fresh air and feeling inspired by all the Lord has made. If you’re feeling trapped in a mundane routine, simply step outside or have a seat on a garden bench and ask God to speak to you.

  1. Get creative at dinnertime.

Allow the family to engage with God and one another around the dinner table. Talk about what God has done during your day and encourage your family to do the same. You could also spend time praying for one another.

  1. Journal and connect with God.

At the end of each day, spend a few moments writing down those things that God has spoken to you about during the day. Keep a journal as a record of all the Father has shared with you.

Kirk Franklin’s Advice to Those Who Want to Do Music for the Lord

Want to Sing, Rap, Work… for Jesus?

At the 50th Annual GMA Dove Awards, Kirk Franklin and his beautiful wife, Tammy, rounded out a spectacular evening celebrating the splendor and diversity of Gospel and Christian Music with questions from the media after the show.

In his usual form, Kirk Franklin, the 2019 Dove Award winner for Gospel Artist of the Year, Contemporary Gospel Recorded Song of the Year, and Inspirational Film of the Year dropped wisdom nuggets that have been personally nurtured and lived throughout his musical career.

Kirk Franklin’s Advice for Beginners

When asked for advice on how to get started pursuing a music career in Gospel Music/Hip-Hip, Franklin offered a very candid and sobering answer that anyone in pursuit of “working for the Lord” can apply to their lives and seriously gauge their motivation. Kirk Franklin offered:

Here’s my greatest advice. If you’re not ready to die, don’t do it. If you’re not ready to die – don’t do it. If you’re not making a commitment that your lyrical content is gonna match what your pursuit is – not perfect, but you’re in pursuit… If you’re not in pursuit, then don’t do it. Because the last thing we need is somebody that does not love the Lord trying to do His work. And so if you’re not ready to die, if you’re not ready to put others before you, and if you’re not ready to be burnt offering every doggone day – don’t do it, dog! Don’t do it. The last thing the world needs is another mistake from the church. We need people that are in pursuit – not perfect – but hungry. So, that’s my advice. Salute to you.

Team Jesus Application Questions

So, the questions for Teammates everywhere are:

  • Are you ready to die for the work?
  • Are you in pursuit of God?
  • Are you ready to put others before yourself?
  • Are you ready to be a sacrifice (burnt offering) every day?

Only what we do for Christ will last. The way to be effective, true, and relevant to what we do for the Lord is to be ready to die for the cause in consistent pursuit of His glory. What’s your motivation? Will you still go?

While we all ponder these questions in self-examination, take a listen to the Gospel Song of the Year, Love Theory! Congratulations, Kirk, and thank you for your gift of song to the world and wisdom for the body of Christ.
